Turn any screen into Multi-Touch via Wiimote support

Its been demonstrated by Johnny Lee that its possible to turn any screen or projector into a multi-touch touchscreen with a wiimote, an IR LED, and a bluetooth adapter (about $40 to multi-touch ANY screen), and that it can perform quite well.
We should implement his work, so that developers can start integrating heavy multi-touch support into the desktop environments. It allows the development of minority report like interfaces and new peripherals. At the very least, it allow very cheap "digital whiteboards" for education users. At best, it allows us to have a semi messy, but very cheap Microsoft surface-like implementation. Also, this has a big impact on movie making.
Implementation of this, allows:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/388/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5555/
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3077/
This allows us to start developing things in a whole new way, and bring multi-touch and touch screens to the masses cheaply.
Finally, its easy to code. Bluetooth support is implemented already, and there are probably already wiimote libs too. Its just a matter of putting it together.
Since the wiimote is just a simple IR camera, we could also create open-hardware schematics for people to make their own blazingly cheap replacement for a wiimote, making it even cheaper.

New authentication methods

Using password is boring. That's why users choose week passwords. New authentication methods can help solving this problem. I suggest this methods:
* passwords
* usb keys
* bluetooth cell phone id
* any combination of these
In user preferences should be ability to pair blootooth with user and to create authentication file and save it to usb disk. Authentication file will be based on asymmetric cryptography for combination of user and computer.
Imagine situation that you come to computer and you are logged in immediately after plugging usb key. Another example is that someone guess your password but cannot authenticate because your cell phone (bluetooth) is not near computer...
Note: Security could be also improved if user choose to encrypt his/her home folder and on usb key will be stored key to decrypt it. Data will remain private even if computer/notebook is stolen. If it has to be used it must be easy as one click.

Make some components (NetworkManager, Tracker, SCIM) optional
|

There are many great components in Ubuntu that just not everybody needs. So they should be made uninstallable or deselectable during installation easily, without breaking the dependency to meta-packages like "ubuntu-desktop". Some of them are:
- Tracker: Some people rather like their "classic" folder structure to organize their files, emails etc., and just don't make use of a desktop search engine. So there is no need for a background process constantly indexing files.
- NetworkManager: A great tool for mobile and notebook users, but for a desktop PC that's permanently connected to the same network, it's just not necessary.
- SCIM: For languages that come out with a simple keyboard layout and don't need special input methods (e.g. English, German, French, ...) , this additional layer is unnecessary.
- Avahi: Only necessary if there's more than one network device around speaking mDNS.
- "Legacy" cronjobs (updatedb, scrollkeeper): For a strictly "desktop" user, these will never be used.
- Bluetooth services: Clearly, for computers without a bluetooth device, the bluetooth daemons do not need to be running and even installed.
These features could be configurable on an extra page with checkboxes an a short, neutral 2-4 sentences explaination on the installer and an "Optional Features" applet on the System->Administration menu.

GPRS via Bluetooth needs a gui

I am using hardy heron..and I connect to internet using a "how to" that I got from the ubuntu forum..It requires me to type commands in the terminal....
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-257127.html
What suprised me was the the fact that, Hardy has lot of improvement in terms of bluetooth configuration gui...and the network manager has new gprs configuration section... I think someone can connect to internet using it...but not me
As a normal user I think there should be a Gui wizard to configure a GPRS internet connection through bluetooth.

make usb-disc status icon in the panel
(simillary as there is BlueTooth, LAN icons in gnome-panel)
and it should be easy to rightclick and choose to disconnect/synchronize
and the status states could be:
connected/disconnected (or mounted/unmounted)
and when connected: not_synchronize/synchronized/writing_now
(and no need to browse to Desktop or MyComputer)

*Update*
found Blueman, looks good based on python (very fine) but its not integrated in standard repositorys because it is a very young Project! Support it please.

Power profiles in Gnome-Power-Manager

Power profiles in GNOME power manager, to make it easy to switch between power-saving mode and number-crunching. I am aware this feature was introduced in Vista, which otherwise kind of sucks. Anyways, this is really very helpful in stretching the battery runtime of laptops.
This way, you could easily switch off compiz effects, enable more aggressive CPU scaling, shut down stuff like Bluetooth, etc.
The profiles could be easily accessible via the power manager icon in the panel.
I think of this NOT to be a duplicate of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4101/ as the goal is rather different.

Use the video capabilities of mobile phones for video conversation with "VOIP" or IM clients (kopete, amsn, openwengo, ekiga, skype, ...).
You would then have a mobile webcam if you use the bluetooth channel :)
It's related to a broader issue: enhance the interoperability between mobile devices and linux.

We currently have Bluetooth 2.0 support (standard was released November 10, 2004).
We should add support for Bluetooth 2.1 (standard was released July 26, 2007).

While I'm transferring data via bluetooth, nautilus doesn't let me see the amount of file transferred in percentages. It would be better to improve this little feature to make the GUI more "human" and useful.

Integrated GUI to manage REMOTE CONTROLS (Bluetooth/IR/UIRT,HID phones,wii,lirc)

There should be an intuitive GUI for configuring all types of remote controls from bluetooth phones (and wii remotes?) to media centre style infra-red controllers.
It should interface with the LIRC daemon (lircd, irexec, irxevent) and HID daemon (hidd) along with other projects starting and stopping required services as devices become available.
The user should be able to select a preset profile containing sensible button mappings for their remote.
It must also be possible to graphically customise button mappings and create for instance .hid files to upload to compatible mobile phones and other devices. Also handle configuration of virtual pointer 'mice' and such devices.
Mappings could be dynamically linked to the particular application currently in use. ie. movie mappings chosen when totem/mplayer/vlc is open and audio mappings for amarok/ryhthmbox etc.
Maybe generic play/pause/next track/previous track/volume functions could be linked with gnome-settings-daemon as it already provides this functionality over dbus for multimedia keys.
Support could be added for full duplex remotes and tablets requiring backend servers such as bemused or remuco. Maybe a widely available java client for phones/PDA/XDA's could be developed/adapted (JamSE).
The LinuxMCE experience might serve as inspiration/guidance.

Can it be done that the services have a partial sleep mode. ie. for example, bluetooth services will stay disabled until a bluetooth device is actually plugged in. Many desktop users do not have bluetooth and the service has to be manually disabled in some cases..

One of the suggestions powertop (a tool that helps to save battery power) told me is to turn off my notebook's bluetooth when it is not being used.
"Disable the unused bluetooth interface with the following command:
hciconfig hci0 down; rmmod hci_usb"
I think it would be nice to have a way to turn off/on bluetooth graphically using bluetooth applet.

Today the usage of a GPS-Device isn't easy in Ubuntu. There should be an auto-detection for GPS-Devices ..like Printers and Bluetooth-Devices. It would be very cool to track myself with tools from the standard-installation. Only the basic GPS-information are needed: positions, altitude, speed and tracking (positions-with-time). Thanks.

Bluetooth support is still a mixed bag in ubuntu. Ubuntu needs to do a better job of making sure bluetooth devices work with the operating system. Headsets are still an arcane science and Nautilus still can't browse a BT device.
