Add download count to the packages in add/remove applications
Written by sboden the 20 May 08 at 11:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add a general download count to the packages in add/remove applications: how many people ever installed this application/package.

What would be nice is to have an indication of popularity of packages. It could serve a couple of purposes:
- indication to developers how many people on ubuntu use their software, not include it anymore if no-one is using it e.g.
- indication to users if software is used a lot... suppose you have 10 instant messagging applications in the repository where 2 or 3 are used by a lot of people and the rest is not. If I would install an IM I would then first also try the ones used a lot (which I hope would result in a better user experience).

Reset counters per ubuntu version. So in hindsight if the data remains available someone could even do popularity graphs over versions.

Add docx, xlsx, pptx, etc. support to OpenOffice and other Ubuntu Office suites
Written by Redrazor39 the 6 May 08 at 00:50. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
title basically. We need to add this support. Apple already has it (but they sued or something) but we should still get it because lots of people are switching to Office Open XML (darn ms for using a name like ours for their cruddy formats) and we need to be able to use that or some people will not consider ubuntu as ahead in technology- they will consider it behind because of some silly office format.

Developer comments
As described in this feature list, OpenOffice 3, which will very likely be included in Ubuntu 8.10, will have import filters for MS OpenXML files.

Integrate by default in firefox the most popular add-ons
Written by orzoweitop the 11 Apr 08 at 15:24. Category: Installation. Related to: Firefox. New
There are very add-ons for firefox, some of these are very popular.

For this reason, I think that why don´t include by default these add-ons?

Some of add-ons that I would like to come by default:
-Adblock plus
-Filter update for adblock plus
-NoScript
-VideoDownloadHelper
-PDF Download

It´s possible to create a survey where the people vote for their favourites add-ons that like to integrate by defult.

Option
Written by JohnSearle the 26 Apr 08 at 18:59. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice if there was a GUI option for opening files that included a choice of which desktop to open it in.

For instance, if I wanted to open an Open Office document in another window besides the one currently displaying my file manager, then I could just right click and choose Open->Desktop 2. A second document in another desktop could be then opened by Open->Desktop 3, instead of switching desktops and opening, or having to move the windows to the appropriate desktop.

Not a necessary feature, but perhaps a convenient addition for those using different desktops for organizational purposes.

[No idea what category to put this in]

Add support for GoogleFS into Nautilus
Written by swalko the 26 Apr 08 at 07:11. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It will be nice if we can simply add space from our google accounts into nautilus and used it transparently like other filesystems on computer.

Compiz off by default until it is stable
Written by steve196 the 7 Apr 08 at 20:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Compiz currently has issues with the screen resolution selector and other apps, that could frustrate newbies.
I think, since the default config should be the noob-friendly one, compiz should be off on default until the weird behaviour is resolved (at least on those graphics cards, that make it behave weird).

[firefox] Flashblock plugin by default
Written by Jarvis the 23 Mar 08 at 19:26. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The problem :
Flash plugin (or Gnash plugin) eats CPU when there are many Flash animations in a website.

My solution :
Install the Flashblock plugin by default in order to choose which Flash animation runs.

Flashblock plugin :

better boot splash/usplash background
Written by oliviacond the 25 Mar 08 at 08:37. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
ubuntu usplash background is very dull, just dark black.
Why not make it brown or any other suitable color?

Take a look on Fedora and OpenSUSE

Change the home page to show latest ideas , not the popular ones
Written by kumailht the 23 Mar 08 at 10:12. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
we need to vote on ideas that are new and not repeatedly see the same ideas, this may misguide new users in to thinking that newer ideas dont exist.

E.g. synaptic could provide a history of what has been installed when along with the possiblity to remove it again.
Fore the people who sometimes evaluate software and afterwards want to remove it again (alon with all installed dependencies)

e.g.

Installed yesterday:
at 5:21pm (_remove_)
Selected
OpenOffice.org
Selected dependencies
Java (1 package depends on Java, _see list_)

Installed two days ago:
at 12:12pm (_remove_)
Selected
GIMP

at 2:59pm (_remove_)
Selected
Gnucash
Selected dependencies
AQbanking (2 packages depends on AQbanking, _see list_)
libchipcard (1 package depends on libchipcard, _see list_)

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

-- Preferences --
Universal Access
About Me
Appearance
Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)
Power Management
