Ubuntu Mobile
Written by scavenger the 18 Apr 08 at 11:36. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I like the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded initiative. I think it would be really cool to have a phone with my favourite os on it :P
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded

I faked some screenshots of how I think Ubmob would be brilliant.
http://www.2shared.com/file/3162217/70eebbb8/ubmob.html

Ubmob should have:

- Applications/places/system menu structure
- Task bar
- WiFi/Bluetooth/IrDA/3G
- SD/USB
- Web browser (Firefox 3), RSS/Podcast reader, email (Evolution), chat (Pidgin), command-line bittorrent, VNC viewer
- Media player (Gstreamer), Nautilus with thumbnailing, Terminal, advanced calculator, notes (not tomboy), baobab
- Full GnomeVFS, gedit, python, pygtk
- It's one repository and update system
- Multi-user support
- NO shutdown, only lock/standby/switch user/hibernate
- Special interaction program for Ubuntu Desktop
- NFS/UpnP for file sharing by default.

Expansion of Add Remove Programs - show user-provided descriptions, feature lists, screenshots, comments, ratings, integration with launchpad. Initial page should be top-rated apps, or newest apps. Managed by a webapp?

Or... leave it as it is, but create a website displaying all the great software available for ubuntu including all the features mentioned above with apturl links to install.

From #4613 (merged):

It should be indicated how much I'll have to download to install something.

We have download limits here and well... quite often I exceed them. It would be useful to indicate how big the download is going to be.

Next Ubuntu LTS release should be on the shelves of shops
Written by idaho06 the 4 Mar 08 at 09:32. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
First of all, sorry about my bad english.

Perhaps, Ubuntu 8.4 will not be ready, but the next Long Time Support release should be available in the malls and specialized computer shops.

I think in a box with a complete manual book written in the language of the country and a pair of disks. A double sided DVD and a double sided CD with the 32 and 64 bit versions of UBUNTU.

This box should have a reasonable price and perhaps a discount in Canonical support to the user.

Edit: People comment that this box should support for restricted/commercial codecs/players/multimedia. I agree with that. The price have to be low and include the royalties about these technologies.

gtk applications need an advanced/unified printing dialogue
Written by kernelOfTruth the 3 Mar 08 at 15:19. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
gtk applications especially openoffice, mozilla firefox, mozilla thunderbird, ...

need an advanced & unified printing dialog which is comparable to the ones offered by microsoft's windows' printing drivers

they at least should include support for several pages per sheet (4 pages on 1 paper; 2 pages on 1 paper, duplex, etc etc)

apps like evince already support it but it's definitely missing on openoffice & firefox (where it obviously is needed the most)

a good example for offered printing options is kpdf

sorry if that functionality is already planned for the next upcoming versions of the mentioned apps

thanks ! =)

Add docx, xlsx, pptx, etc. support to OpenOffice and other Ubuntu Office suites
Written by Redrazor39 the 6 May 08 at 00:50. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
title basically. We need to add this support. Apple already has it (but they sued or something) but we should still get it because lots of people are switching to Office Open XML (darn ms for using a name like ours for their cruddy formats) and we need to be able to use that or some people will not consider ubuntu as ahead in technology- they will consider it behind because of some silly office format.

Developer comments
As described in this feature list, OpenOffice 3, which will very likely be included in Ubuntu 8.10, will have import filters for MS OpenXML files.

Advertise Ubuntu on TV
Written by flooted the 4 Mar 08 at 07:16. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At a guess most mainstream computer users still watch more TV than they use computers. It takes a bit of searching online to find out about Ubuntu, what it is and why it is a viable OS. Only people who are already interested in Ubuntu will take the time to do this. So reach out to those who don't know about Ubuntu through TV.

Add download count to the packages in add/remove applications
Written by sboden the 20 May 08 at 11:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add a general download count to the packages in add/remove applications: how many people ever installed this application/package.

What would be nice is to have an indication of popularity of packages. It could serve a couple of purposes:
- indication to developers how many people on ubuntu use their software, not include it anymore if no-one is using it e.g.
- indication to users if software is used a lot... suppose you have 10 instant messagging applications in the repository where 2 or 3 are used by a lot of people and the rest is not. If I would install an IM I would then first also try the ones used a lot (which I hope would result in a better user experience).

Reset counters per ubuntu version. So in hindsight if the data remains available someone could even do popularity graphs over versions.

Make Drag&Drop possible everywhere in GNOME
Written by droetker the 25 Mar 08 at 21:19. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
Drag&Drop is such a intuitive and simple action - it must be promoted.
There are many things that already work in Ubuntu/GNOME/KDE with Drag&Drop, but there is much that can be improved:

- DnD an image from Firefox to the Desktop should place that image there, not a textfile with the link to the homepage.
- DnD from the icon on the left side of the URL in the Firefox address bar to the desktop should create a .desktop file with a link to that URL.
- DnD of devices onto the Pastebin should unmount them (like OSX)
- DnD of a Desktop file into a mainmenu/submenu of GNOME should create a menu item.
- fix the Nautilus-in-list-view-doesn't-accept-DnD-files issue: Launchpad bug #61237
- DnD file from anywhere (e.g. Desktop) to a folder in the "file open" "file save" dialogs.
- DnD a file into an edit box should insert a file:// link - KDE has this; Idea #3027
from Idea #4105:
- DnD Attachement from Thunderbird to Nautilus
- DnD Files From File-Roller to Nautilus
- DnD Picture from Nautilus to OOo

...and many more, please submit your ideas, I'll put them into the description!

Simple message saying usb unit is ready to extract
Written by ladaja the 29 Feb 08 at 13:10. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The idea is very simple. A small message saying that the usb drive is ready to extract after you unmount the unit to extract it. It is only to be sure about the device is ready to be extracted.
Thanks.

Translate programs descriptions
Written by NachoBlanco the 1 Mar 08 at 11:37. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I started using Ubuntu with Dapper Drake, one of the things I liked more was the "Add and delete applications" option. But I have seen that most of the applications descriptions are exlusively shown in English. I can read English, but one of the Ubuntu most powerfull features is it's internationalization and the possibility of get most of the information in your local language.

I think that all the descriptions of the apps. should be translated to every languages, so everyone could understand perfectly what that program does.
