Now see the reason I moved from Ubuntu to Linux Mint (based off Ubuntu) was because so many things were already installed that weren't on Ubuntu, while having a small file size.

Off that point, one of the things that nags me the most when installing Ubuntu is that there is no flash player pre-installed on the OS, and is one of the main things that makes Ubuntu "not out of the box".

So my suggestion is that when you open Firefox for the first time, it should already be able to use flash; preferably version 9 and up.

Sun's Nimbus desktop theme Nimbus is IMHO by far the most advanced, most professional and best looking Gnome desktop theme available under a open source licence.

It is designed by professionals, with usability and the "first impression" in mind. It is unique in its appearance but also familiar to Windows and Mac users.

It is beautiful, productive and and can be used even in a brownish / orange desktop environment.

Please vote for Nimbus as a theme that at least can be selected from the "Appearance" menu and comes with the next Ubuntu.

Thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=900225

Screenshot:
http://vale.homelinux.net/wordpress/2007/09/29/nimbus-beauty-for-your-ubuntu-desktop/

Packages on Launchpad:
https://launchpad.net/~pcastellazzi/+archive

Ever since the release of 8.04 I've felt like I've been doing nothing but playing a hide and go seek game with my computer to find the correct settings I need to have my computer set to to have specific programs play audio. I realized that if you open Flash before opening Audacity, Audacity will report sound errors, and if you start Audacity before Flash, Flash doesnt make any sound. It's not just Audacity and Flash that do this. It's every program on my system. Pidgin completely stopped making those annoying noises it usually makes and I have to force reload alsa everytime I want to change programs. Come on already, pick a sound system, and stick with it.

[-22] Ubuntu Applications – Adopt Portable Applications Model

A very interesting development for the Windows platform are the so-called Portable Applications.

These applications don't have to be installed using a “classic” Windows installer and their functioning does not depend on proper settings in the Windows Registry.
If fact they can be copied to an arbitrary location on (writable) storage media like a fixed or removable hard disk drive or an USB key and they will just work.

Portable Applications are not based on a new technology. In early MS-DOS days all applications were “portable”. A few reasons making this “old” technology so interesting are listed below:

1.If for some reason a user has to reinstall the OS then reinstalling the OS is just the start of a long and tedious process. All non-portable applications need to be reinstalled as well. This is, to say the least, very annoying.
For portable applications there is no need to do a reinstall. In worst case a user just needs to copy a backup of the portable applications back to the hard drive. And in case the user stored his portable applications in a different partition then there is even no need for this.

2.Portable applications can be stored on an arbitrary location on the hard disk or on removable media like an USB drive.
So even if the partition on which the OS resides gets short on disk space, the user can still add portable applications.
This is much more elegant than forcing the user to reorganize and reinstall his PC platform such that it can accommodate more applications.

3.Portable applications do not mix up or get integrated into the operating system.
In my opinion this is, at least for most software applications, a superior concept.

Currently the Ubuntu platform does not support the concept of portable applications.
When it comes to installing applications in general (portable or non-portable) then in my opinion Windows is superior over Ubuntu, or better said Linux in general.

Why?

In Windows the user is in control: the user decides where the application will be installed. There is (usually) no requirement to install applications in the “Windows File System”.
When installing an application not in the “Windows File System” then only “small” chunks, necessary for the application to run (dll's, drivers etc), might be put in the file system. The bulk of the application is put where the user wants it to be.

I know about a few initiatives in the Linux community such as “Zeroinstall” and “Klik” that should make it possible to install applications giving similar advantages to Portable Applications for Windows.

But it seems to me that these initiatives are (not yet) seriously supported by the Ubuntu community.

Therefore I would like to request the Ubuntu development team to seriously consider the Portable Applications Model for Ubuntu Applications (whenever suitable).

Regards, Marlo

Missing file support for mdf,odb in openoffice/ubuntu is not what I expected.previously we had openoffice database, which supported smaller database making and supported file formats like odb, mdf, mddb Microsoft access file formats, now I am bewildered how to use those files that are made in Access 2003/2007.even office 2007 file formats are not supported well until open office 3 ,like xlsx, docx, pptx, oodbx.Microsoft hasn’t removed Access from there suite of Office then why did open office remove it. I installed Ubuntu on friends pc and was amazed to see missing access file support ,he wanted to use those access files and make new database.there are some database software available for online ubuntu users but what about offline users. Tellico and kexi are great for kde users but I hate to miss database application in ubuntu please include in future.else include Kexi in default ubuntu installation

Maybe creating a default stable kernel, then a testing kernel then a bleeding edge kernel would be more beneficial to all users and developers?

As an example, I own a Hauppuage TV tuner card, ubuntu kernel just misses out on the driver for this card. Installing the test kernel will hold the driver I wont until the kernel becomes 'Stable'?

Hi for people who have licence copys of windows or older versions of linux eg corel linux. have a classic mode. yes we have emulators, but they are as pain & wine which breaks compatibily with each release. I love a enviroment were we could install the other os to the hd and it runs seemlestly in the background so lets say I have windows Nt installed in the proposed enviroment I can install my wordperfect 6.1 into it stick a icon on the desktop and launch it natively with in the classic mode. I can run nativly my mac os 9 apps on mac os 10.4 in its classic mode print work ect. its a shame I have to uses a windows machine to run some older apps namely word perfect. yes I can run it in virtual box easily, but first I have to start virtual box, then start the emulated os then start my application. why cant I just drag a short cut for my wordperfect to my ubuntu desktop and click on it and start it with out going thru hoops. trying to get word perfect to run under wine, well I have more chance of growing new teeth than that. Yes I know about oppen office, abiword. Now I do make a lot of card inserts for my wife on the injet printer. the text boxes I make on the page in wordperfect can be shadesd any two tone colour, a variety of backgrounds can be done, yet in oo I can only to 1 colour, I cant start with light pink at the top and have it melt into blue like I do on wordperfect. so yea I want to run my native windows version of word perfect or my corel linux wp on ubuntu.

This is admittedly arcane, but I use emacs as an editor for LaTeX input files with accented characters. There may be a simple solution to this, but using the inputenc package with the [latin1] option does not work reliably. Sometimes but not always I'll get garbage as output when I enter "é". Using "\'e" is reliable but tedious. The problem seems to have something to do with the way foreign language locales are defined. These were updated recently and what used to work no longer does.

Thanks for listening.
