More support for diversity
Written by ..... the 7 Mar 08 at 21:25. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu has already a KDE, Gnome, XFCE versions and even a Christian edition. It baffles me why developers will overlook a huge potential audience: One-armed-myopic-Moldovans.

Developers, please try and aim for a more diverse audience and consider OAMMuntu. The userbase could do with fattening up and One-armed-myopic-Moldovans would fit the bill perfectly.

In "Appearance", you can click on the "Customize..." button.

There in the "Controls" tab you can select "Redmond".
But in "Window Border" there is no "Redmond" setting. :(

I propose to add a "Redmond" Window Border, to go along with the "Redmond" Controls.

CSpace provides a platform for secure, decentralized, user-to-user communication over the internet. The driving idea behind the CSpace platform is to provide a connect(user, service) primitive, similar to the sockets API connect(ip,port). Applications built on top of CSpace can simply invoke connect(user, service) to establish a connection.

Add Launchpad category

A lot of people have got really good ideas for Launchpad. However, unfortunately there is no place to submit them. It would be really great if a category for such ideas would be added.

Listen as Amarok for Gnome
Written by pi314 the 29 Feb 08 at 13:18. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Listen is a complete music player with:
-Lyrics
-Wikipedia information about the song, artist and album.
-last.fm audioscrobbler and related artists.
-Complete library management
-iPod support
-Podcast
-...

It's very useful and easy to use, but many people never heard about it. It could be installed instead of Rhythmbox to compete against Amarok.

Add the ''Hide menubar'' firefox add on by de
Written by retj the 15 May 08 at 01:59. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This add-on hides the main toolbar until you press ALT button, try it, i think firefox should bring this by default, makes the window look more simple.

Must Change the name
Written by kyubi the 29 Feb 08 at 15:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
They might add GNU/Linux to the name, example:

Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

Sometimes Cononical refers to Ubuntu as Ubuntu Linux, and other people more...

Linux is only the kernel of the OS, the complete OS is named GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu as son of Debian GNU/Linux, must use GNU/Linux in its name.

It's GNU/Linux, dammit....

Copy/paste in terminal
Written by Raigedas the 3 May 08 at 14:17. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It is logical that text is copied as soon as you select it with your mouse in terminal (like in PUTTY on Windows). Because the only reason to select it is to copy it (you would not cut it).

Also user may want to choose what to do when right mouse is clicked in terminal: to show popup menu or to paste text.

GUI for Locate
Written by spacejesus the 12 Mar 08 at 15:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great to have a GUI for the locate command. THis is a very powerful tool and I think it is essential to have a search function which indexes only file names and attributes. I never need to use a desktop search engine to find content but I'm always using locate. The important thing is to be able to easily pipe results to a filemanager so I can manipulate files (copy, cut, paste, rename etc). The locate plugin in krusader does this, but it would be great to have this functionality native to Ubuntu. The one application I have missed since moving from xp is Locate32, which revolutionized my computer use. As the author of locate32 based his program on locate for unix I think we should have a similar front-end for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Linux -- Laptop Edition
Written by MakotoTheKnight the 16 Mar 08 at 04:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Alright, so we know we have the desktop and the server editions, and for what they're worth, they do a wonderful job on laptops.

However, what they do isn't necessarily enough, as many laptop users have to go out of their way to install modules to keep their laptops down, or keep their hard disks from being over conservative on power.

This is why I'm proposing a Laptop Edition for Ubuntu Linux, and to put in a conservative ballpark, I'd shoot for 8.10 at the earliest, or even 9.04.

The theory is simple: Get a version of Linux that is designed to work flawlessly with laptops, without letting it think for a fraction of a second that it is a desktop.

Key focuses for a laptop version would be:

1) Battery life
2) CPU throttling
3) Heat reduction
4) Less strain on the hard disks, where necessary
5) Wireless

The reason that I said 8.10-9.04 as a ballpark would be that it might be favorable to get another type of BIOS on that motherboard, instead of what's already specified. This way, things can click a bit smoother, such as wireless identification and various other tweaks.

Do feel free to add your own theories and comments to this, since it is something I'd like to see happen someday.

Single authentication for administrative tasks (system/admin.->dialog box)
Written by pitwalker@gmail.com the 15 May 08 at 12:42. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The frequent password getting box is unfriendly for me.
OpenSuse's YAST is simplier, because you must enter the password for root privileges only once.

The dialog box contains icons for:
command line, package management (synaptic), accounts,
login options, services, shares, hardware devices,
log viewer...

package area
Written by Lex the 15 Jun 08 at 09:45. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are too many ideas that just proposing package or asking for updates. It would be beneficial for users and developer to get better statistic and dedicated area for those informations. This new area should include data from Synaptic survey as well.

New package survey system should:
- get "representative" package popularity feedback
- allow to propose new packages
- enable to point out outdated packages
- tip deprecated packages, that could be mark and removed from "far future" repository

Editing ideas after people have voted could cause (obvious) problems. Why not give people 3 minutes after initially submitting the post.

MAN should tell you what's available
Written by fester225 the 10 Mar 08 at 15:19. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Right now MAN tells you how to run a specific command, but not what commands are available to run. If you don't already know what commands are available, MAN isn't of much use.

There should be a generic entrance into MAN which shows all the commands it covers, along with brief descriptions of what each command does.

Canonical Ltd. to sell computers with Ubuntu (with native drivers)
Written by FranciscoPadillaGarcia the 29 Feb 08 at 05:50. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Canonical Ltd. should start offering their own built systems just like DELL is doing. DELL is making lots of money by selling computers pre-loaded with Ubuntu Linux while Canonical Ltd. could do the same and use the revenues to further support the Ubuntu project. It's a win/win deal.

Mark Shuttleworth could make an investment with motherboard, graphic/audio card, printer, etc. makers (VIA, Intel, ATI, etc) so they build one robust system with open-source native Linux drivers (along with all the bells and whistles of native support) once and for all. Then Canonical Ltd. could market that system that would be flawless since it would have native drivers and it would have been tested.

Not only would this make Ubuntu profitable for Canonical Ltd., but also it would promote Ubuntu as the best end-user deal while encouraging a healthy competitive race with DELL and others. It would push other hardware makers to release drivers for GNU/Linux systems. The Ubuntu promise would remain intact since it states that Ubuntu (the software) will always be free of charge. I hope you read this, Mr. Shuttleworth.

Make more screen space available.
Written by johno the 5 Apr 08 at 01:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's currently difficult to free up the interface dead space for applications that can benefit from more content space. Often the panels and title bar of the application serve little immediate purpose, but take up a lot of the relatively valuable vertical space. This is especially relevant with Ubuntu defaulting to having top and bottom panels that stay on top of windows.
One way to free up this space temporarily is to enable full-screen mode for the main application, but it's quite intrusive, and doesn't allow any way for notifications to show at all. You can enable hide/auto-hide on panels, but there it's difficult to switch quickly between compact and full mode. Even there, if you want a notification area, you are still stuck with losing a full panel height and titlebar height from the whole screen- just for 50x24 pixels of icons.
