Provide Synaptic with all available 3rd party repositories
Written by eng.essam the 8 Sep 08 at 07:07. Category: System. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Provide Synaptic with all available 3rd party repositories to choose from, also provide option to choose all of them at once. That is better than searching and collecting them from numerous sites.

easier tools for making .deb files
Written by nitrofurano the 5 Sep 08 at 20:46. Category: Installation. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Since start using Ubuntu, i started to got curious on how can i make my own .deb files.

Well, i can imagine most of you when reading this seems to be about on sticking here some Debian or Ubuntu tutorial links about it, but mostly are too complicated or messy, specially when the process of making .deb files is not much more than packaging some non-executable documents.

The easier ways i found on making .deb were:

1. using alien over .tar.gz tarballs (but it lacks on very important 'control' information for the databases, like dependencies, description, etc.)

2. using a .sh with plenty of 'echo' and 'ar' commands, but it can create corrupt .deb files, and so incompatible with gdebi, dpkg and so on...

My idea would be being able to create a .deb file from a tool like FileRoller, but of course all suggestions and reccomendations of new tools i may not know are hugelly welcome! =)

(in meanwhile, i'm getting stuck into creating tarballs, and expanding them with 'tar -zxvf tarball.tar.gz -C /')

create a kubuntu 8.10 with version 3.5.10 of kde
Written by arkara the 26 Aug 08 at 16:01. Category: System. Related to: Kubuntu. Won't implement
Some of the users still think that kde 4.1 or 4.2(on the kubuntu release) is not mature enough for their desktop needs.
Please offer both kde 3.5.10 and kde 4.2 on the next kubuntu release.

Stop Choosing Applications for Us;Let ANY application in Add/Remove be Removed!   forum
Written by wkdude18 the 5 Aug 08 at 15:25. Category: System. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
I find it annoying when I disagree with the ubuntu developers choice in applications and have to remove evolution, openoffice.org, games, or whatever, but I find it really annoying when I try to remove an application that I find out I have to remove ubuntu-desktop or a bunch of other applications I do want. For example, trying to save time by going to add/remove applications to get rid of evolution, instead of going to Synaptic and not being sure if you're removing a metapackage or dummy package, but that's pointless because you do have to go to Synaptic and remove it and ubuntu-desktop package, so when I want to upgrade to the next release I have to go back to Synaptic first and reinstall ubuntu-desktop. Would it be too much to ask to be able to remove every program in the Add/Remove Applications Program from that program? It is annoying having to go to Synaptic for something that is listed in there. I mean, even Microsoft will let you uninstall Internet Explorer, so why do I have to go through much hassle to uninstall Evolution?

Prominent Link to Microsoft's Ideas Page
Written by coolaj86 the 26 Jul 08 at 18:38. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A lot of the ideas that pop up on here have more to do with getting around problems introduced when working with Windows in a mixed Linux / Windows environment (ie dual-boot) rather than actual problems with Ubuntu.

I think that providing a link to the Microsoft Ideas site in brainstorm would be a way to get some of those requests forwarded to the right departments.

http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/outreach/ideas/ideaSubmit.mspx

Unfortunately their "Brainstorm"-ish page is currently broken and the support rep I just IMed to wanted me to visit some other website because he wasn't trained in reporting broken links... and couldn't click on the link he sent me to report it himself...

(BTW, If you'd like a similar experience here's their support rep page: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_more_master?ws=mscom#tab1 )

Synaptic for Windows
Written by loneowais the 21 Jul 08 at 15:59. Category: Others. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
I never use windows. But I would love to have a Synaptic or a Repository downloaderfor Windows. It should work exactly like it does on ubuntu. It should download the packages & dependencies & put them in a categorised folder.

This way all our poor friends who don't have an internet connection or have on working only on windows will be able to download packages for ubuntu easily.

No to "Dependency hell",zero dependency package management
Written by dragoninsane the 20 Jul 08 at 15:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu by default supports deb although there is still debate whether its best versus RPM,PISI,rPath, conary, portage(gentoo) so many http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system.
I think DEB is better and does job well.ubuntu should either build new packaging system or should improve the way packages and dependencies are handles.ubuntu can Make New Packaging system as newer os like Foresight linux has Done. There should be "Zero Dependency" when installing applications and programs like windows, when user wants an application to install in windows he has to just run application installer(exe like deb) nothing else no internet etc although software is downloaded from internet/other source. Its even hard when compiling a software from source,./configure,make install(user gets error).A package should contain all dependencies(necessary files) to install.uninstalling should also be made easier too.
Imagine a no-internet zone in office,no internet at home how a guy can install package with single package?.90% of windows users are not aware of dependencies in linux filesystem or newbie/novice too.i wanted to install gnomedo which is 127kb size and has dependency of 5k(not on system).
Make it experimental installer then evolve it as Full featured package management.

Merge K/X/Ubuntu Artworks/Colors
Written by retj the 20 Jul 08 at 03:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu is Orange. Kubuntu is Blue. Xubuntu is Dark Blue. But aren't they all Ubuntu?
Why not having at least same colors. Cold be different wallpaper styles, but with the same color palette (the new one for 8.10). It's all about consistency, now that they dont share the same name, they should share similar looks in order to remind the user that is the same distribution.

Name for 9.04..... Jazzy Jackal
Written by animaniac the 1 Jul 08 at 19:33. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Jay as suggested somewhere is not African.

Jackal seems to be the only good name if we want to keep it to the African theme without resorting to Jackass.

Also the fact that Anubis (Egyptian god of embalming) had the head of a Jackal, makes it suitable for an LTS.

And what kind of a jackal should it be then?
Jolly, Joyful- too cheesy.
Jogging, Jumping- dose not fit the naming scheme too well.
Jazzy- basically a synonym for fancy or lively, and as a whole it sounds rather sophisticated.

[firefox] password to change start page
Written by ulrik04 the 29 Jun 08 at 21:01. Category: Security. Related to: Firefox. New
When changing start page in firefox, it should ask for the users password, so others doesn't change it. I hate when my friends does that :P

EDIT: or at least, there should be an option to activate this.

merge back into Debian and end Ubuntu
Written by slashdotaccount the 18 Jun 08 at 18:46. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make hardy the last Ubuntu release ever and from then on work on merging remaining Ubuntu developers, changes, ideas, bugs, users etc back into Debian. Don't work on Ubuntu, just work Debian instead. There was no need to fork in the first place, please fix this. Canonical can make money Debian fine, they don't need a forked distro and forked community to make money.

Mockup of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex
Written by nq6 the 8 Jun 08 at 13:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I created the mockup of Ubuntu using some elements of other mockups. I think the change of Ubuntu may not be radical. Because it draws its visual identity.

He is easily identified, and its windows are differentiated from all distributions in the first look, as we see in the TV series, Criminal Minds
http://www.meiobit.com/files/penelope.jpg

Can you see the mockup this link below.

Let Ubiquity take the settings from the LiveCD to Install
Written by droetker the 5 Jun 08 at 13:33. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
If you start the Ubuntu LiveCD, change a few things like Desktop bachground, icon placing, surf the web and have saved passwords/history/... etc - I'd like it to see that ubiquity takes the current profile and copies it to the fresh installes system, into the user profile..
There are some issues - e.g. if you mograte from another system (older Ubuntu) and import settings, those should have priority (or not?) - discussable.
Abut all in all i'd like to not have vanished all the settings from the LiveCD...

If you like this idea, also look at my other ideas

Remove useless policykit.
Written by alastor666 the 3 Jun 08 at 05:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
An idea is to remove policykit, indeed this module is probably one of the reasons that speed down Hardy.
Then I don't see the utility of this software because to change system configuration the admin password was already asked.
This new implemented software is in my opinion one of the more useless and irritating thing in hardy and the main reason that makes Gutsy better than Hardy.
Moreover I don't evoke all the small problems due to it (no auto-edited fstab ect...) by the fact that it is strictly bound with Hal.

For me Ubuntu team has implemented this only to make Ubuntu looks like Vista ....

By default - do not show any desktop icons, including drives icons
Written by mangar the 2 Jun 08 at 14:43. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Desktop is usually used as temporary workspace, with anything else being clutter and distraction.

Most of the time, the desktop is covered by active application windows, so anything that resides on the desktop is hard to reach.

Also - this is duplication of functionality - the places menu provides an easy access to drives, which is not obscured by the windows.

Make a .deb and add Google Earth to the software catalog
Written by Zigi15 the 2 Jun 08 at 10:46. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Nobody likes that sloppy, hard to get, time-wasting binary installer of Google Earth. Make a .deb and make the experience much more user-friendly. I am surprised that Google Earth is not in the software catalog yet.
