Multiple users can be logged in by using the user switching. But when the second user forgets about the first one and tries to shut down the computer, no warning pops up and it kills all the sessions silently. That's really bad, because all the unsaved work of the first user is completely lost. It would be *so easy* just to pop up confirmation dialog saying, that other users are still logged in and the shutdown can lose their unsaved data. In the fast-user-switch-applet we can see users currently logged in, so this is really a matter of few lines of code to implement. It would often save a lot of cursing. Windows have this functionality.

Example: Alice is working with Ubuntu. Bob wants to read his email quickly. Alice fast-switches to Bob account. Bob reads his email, forgets about Alice's running session and shuts down the computer. All Alice's unsaved work is lost. This wouldn't happen with the confirmation dialog.

Developer comments
++ for me for being useful, and easy to implement: we just have to look at the current ConsoleKit sessions to get a list of which other users are logged in where. As an added bonus we can look at "who" to see currently established network conditions.

UI-wise this should just be added to the shutdown/reboot dialog. I would like to avoid introducing a separate "Are you sure?" confirmation dialog before getting to the actual shutdown/reboot one.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

It would be nice if include by adding a new tab for it.:
- temperature (cpu, hdd, chipsets),
- memory (with manufacture model?)
- graphics card (model, memory)
- chipsets (processor, cores, lan, wifi)
- ... others?

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

-- Preferences --
Universal Access
About Me
Appearance
Bluetooth
Default Printer
Encryption and Keyrings
Keyboard
Keyboard Shortcuts
Main Menu
Mouse
Network Proxy
PalmOS Devices (I don't have one)
Power Management

Option to update during install

There should be an option to install newer packages rather than the outdated ones on disc during system installation. Doesn't Debian already have this?

I can easily vote many times on any idea, if I click many times fast enough. This is clearly wrong and very undemocratic!

I tried Brainstorm on Opera 9.23 and Windows XP

Evolution Calendar - Drag&Drop Appointments
Written by sessorbsed the 8 Mar 08 at 22:18. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Implement the drag & drop action on appointments between days.

Ex : We are monday, I click on my appointment at 10AM and drag it on any day in the calendar on the left to move it. It will appear that day at 10AM.

Really really handy.

Like in Outlook :'(

alt+tilda
Written by cope the 8 Mar 08 at 22:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I also use a mac, and alt+tilda cycles through the current windows of the application that is active..

i.e. lets say you have 3 terminals open, and 2xfirefox and 1xevolution.

ALT+TAB cycles through every instance of every application.
Lets say I have terminal focused, if I ALT+TILDA it will cycle only through the terminals, and not every other window!

Make Compiz Fusion Modular
Written by MarcusMaximus the 8 Mar 08 at 10:02. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I L-O-V-E the effects I can get with Compiz Fusion but the hours that it took to get the "cube atlantis" plugin installed on Hardy(which included completely breaking compiz several times before I got it right) and the fact that after installing the unofficial plugins and trying to run them, compiz crashed, is kinda ridiculous. It should be altered so you can simply download a plugin(be it in a .deb or any other format), double click on it(or have an option in the Compiz effects manager to import a plugin) and have it install automatically.

create a graphical installer app, similar to anaconda on fedora, and allow an install directly from CD, rather than booting to the LiveCD first, and then having the option to install.

360 controller compatibility
Written by darkproteus66 the 7 Mar 08 at 20:51. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make it so that the 360 controller can work in the Ubuntu desktop. I already use my 360 controller on my PC for some new game and all my emulations but it would be great for it to work on my Ubuntu partition. Also native support for the wireless dongle and 360 controller would be great.

install automatically the linux version of apps seen in the windows partition
Written by MiTcX the 7 Mar 08 at 19:49. Category: Installation. Related to: Live CD installer. New
* Equivalent linux apps to be proposed in the installation action

yes, it's simple :

look at all programs installed in the 'program files' windows folder and
ask the user if he want to install the equivalent linux app !
(from Wubi or Desktop install) .

If someone has a special interest on something, maybe we can give him the equivalent programs of ones he use to play under Windows/MacOS.

Those specific programs may not be included in the CD/DVD but installed from internet.

for instance :
blender -> install blender !
MikTeX -> install TeX & LaTeX
music/video edition...
etc....

But now more and more screen was 16/10 WideScreen.

This can be interesant to have an adapted framebuffer.

I want to know where programs and applications are installed... Easily
Written by Pyrotecx the 7 Mar 08 at 14:33. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Windows I can just navigate my way to "Program Files" and more than likely find which program I am looking for and a collection of the files this program depends on. I can also use "Add and Remove Programs" to find where they are installed.

I am not recommending to change the standard Linux file system layout, but to add some feature perhaps within the package manager that makes it simple to find out where the package and all of its dependencies are located or "installed to".

First time Linux users can be easily confused by the concept of installing software in Linux. It may be easy to install now, but there is still a layer of confusion when looking for the program that you just installed. Someone may not understand the difference from its Binaries and the actual location of the files that are used to run the application.

Save Synaptic Searches
Written by origin415 the 8 Mar 08 at 01:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Searching synaptic for packages is all well and good, but as soon as I commit any changes, that search is gone. Synaptic searches are fast for what they are searching through, but it does take time and is really annoying to lose. Can't search result lists be kept the entire session, or even kept across sessions?

Create list of reasons "why migrate to Ubuntu from".
Written by smirnfil the 7 Mar 08 at 10:53. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've tried to view ubuntu.com as a user who works on another OS(windows or mac for example). It is hard to find reasons to change OS on this site. You can read "It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more." But mac and windows contains them too. In learn more user can find that Ubuntu is good system, but he can't find reasons to migrate.
Let's create simple list of seven reasons to migrate to Ubuntu from other OS. And populate it in the net, so people will want to change their OS.
