Don't reveal individual demotion/promotion votes

Votes should be secret but right now they are not.
Why should votes be secret? For the same reason that votes and surveys responses are usually anonymous in real life: concern about retribution or other blowback.
Say another BS'er sees that I voted against his pet idea and he jumps over to a forum and asks his buddies to come vote against all my ideas.
Now I generally DO comment even on things I vote against. But it's my choice. If the voter wants to reveal why he voted such a way he can put a comment (or Brainstorm devs can add a "vote reason").
If it's left this way I think it's important to let the users know that this is the way it is. I didn't know it till I started playing with the new "My dashboard."

Fork Gnome

The Gnome team is not in touch with the average user. They take the "tried and true" route on the development patch. KDE is far too bloated and unstable. Usability had not improved and easy of use remains stagnant on both end. Ubuntu seeks to make linux for human beings, but constantly relies on outside projects to provide that functionality. We need a middle ground interface that is powerful, element, and useful. I want to see new ideas and interfaces, not recycled ones. Gnome is Desktop 1.0 and its time to move the interface forward.

Rename top level directory names

Although this was copied from what is probably an april's fool joke, it directly made sense to me. The current directory structure is very confusing to new users and the one proposed below immediately makes sense to anyone:
/bin /system/executables
/boot /system/boot
/dev /system/devices
/etc /system/config
/lib /system/libraries
/home /users
/media /storage
/mnt /storage
/proc /system/processes
/root /users/Administrator
/sbin /system/executables/admin
/tmp /system/temporary
/usr /system/applications
(idea taken from http://blog.drinsama.de/erich/en/linux/debian/2008040101-renaming-directories.h tml)

Modified ideas should appear on latest ideas list

Well the title says it all...
The ideas which are modified, due to something that you were not aware at the time of posting idea. So you add this info afterwards, should be reintroduced on latest ideas list.
For example: I posted this idea: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8251/, but forgot to write how to actually do this idea.
So I took time to think about it.
--------------------------------
this is good, because it allows you to insert new info about your idea, which you got from the comments or on net, even if the idea was posted long time ago.
---------------------------------
Some of this info can completely change the whole point of idea or improve it or make it easier to understand.
----
This idea could be a bit confusing, but sorry I can't put it better in words than this.

the voting should be open for public, the registration process is short but it will shorten the voting in my opinion, I think ubuntu brainstorm will get more responses when it's open.

No Password-Reply ******

In most graphical applications, whenever some password is required like sudo and during login, the password is echoed like stars ******. Someone, who sits next to can see (yes of course, and hear), how many chars your secret phrase has. It would be better to not echo the number of characters.

Shutdown after delay when power button is pressed
|

Written by Hawke the 29 Feb 08 at 22:09. Category: System.

When the power button is pressed, it would be good if Ubuntu could first ask what to do, but then automatically power down after a delay if no response is given. The delay length could be configurable, and the automatic shutdown should probably be optional. I think a delay of 60s would be a good default delay length
This would guard against accidental (user accidentally bumped the power button) or malicious (someone walked by and pressed the power button to be mean) power button pushes by allowing the user to cancel, yet still allow the user to press the button and walk away.
OS X and Fedora both do this and it works very well.
This is based on the similar idea #1324, suggesting that Ubuntu shutdown when the power button is pressed rather than asking what to do.

Prevent too loud sound. This can damage your ear. I want protection.
"It isn't possible" is no reason to vote it down. I do not believe that you want to damage your ear.

Clamfs is a caching file system that provides realtime anti-virus scanning (via ClamAV), can be used with any Linux file system, and helps improve file access times!
Main site: clamfs.sourceforge.net
Performance benchmark: clamfs.sourceforge.net/benchmark
Note: This is already in the repositories, it only needs to be configured.

In Gutsy and Hardy, Wine automatically runs .exe files, which can be a risk if a virus it is. There should at least be a notification pop-up window (which would give the option of disabling itself for next time) telling you about this risk.

Single user auto-selection login

I'm the only user of my MacBook Pro. The login manager automatically selects my username, so I only need to type in my password. It would be nice to have this feature in GDM/KDM considering most systems are only accessed by one user. Also, it could remember that last user that logged in and make it default until another user tried to log in.

Ever had to log into ubuntu while somebody is watching you type your password? It would be great to be able to type extra characters before and/or after the correct password string and still work. For instance, say the password is "orange" then typing "ABCorangeDEFH" or "uorange232j" would work just as well as typing simply "orange."

Anti Virus and Anti Spyware Software, for Ubuntu Users

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 7.10 in my second PC and I am very pleased with the operating system and the applications provided with it. I wish to promote it in our local community for those who cannot afford to have expensive products installed in their home PCs. However, my main concern is about Anti Virus and Anti Spyware software availability for Ubuntu users.
I will be delighted to hear of any Anti Virus software availability for Ubuntu.
