Ubuntu Centralized Image Installation/Recovery/Backup

The idea here is to have an application, which will run on a server in a LAN, and will help us manage multiple clients (Server or Desktops) in the LAN.
By this I mean having an application that helps us manage the Server/Desktop client through a centralized server and that will allow us to create images of the installed OS (Ubuntu) in the client machine, and restore it when needed, doing all this from the Centralized Server.
This idea emerged from the need of having such tool on Computer Labs (In Schools or Universities), where they regularly need to reinstall programs or an OS on their machines if something goes wrong with one of it. So, by having such application, we would be able to restore images remotly from the centralized server to the client machine, and this will aid the administration of a computer lab.
Similar to what RIS (Remote Installation Services) is, but just for Ubuntu.

In order to promote Ubuntu, we should have a viral video contest. Users can create there own videos on Youtube or other video sites, and then register them on a Ubuntu contest page. The videos should promote Ubuntu in a creative fashion Users should also adhere to certain guidelines in order to be accepted. Whoevers registered video has the most page views by a certain deadline will be eligible for a prize.
Prizes to be determined later, but some possibilities could be
> Getting to meet Mark Shuttleworth!
> Monetary Compensation
> A New High End computer running Ubuntu
> A trip down a series of tubes.
> A contract to direct Ubuntu TV commercials
Runner up will get a free tee-shirt

Better support for WWAN / HSDPA Adapters

Ubuntu should have good support for WWAN adapters (such as via the HSDPA protocol) out of the box.
This way ubuntu is ready when the costs of data over HSDPA are driven down low enough to make it cheap enough for every day users. Work on supporting this could probably be reused later on when protocols change, provided a frontend/backend system are used.
Support would mainly comprise of fixing gnome to support WWAN better in the network configuration tools, and allowing users to enter details for their WWAN login during installation if a supporting adapter is detected.

"Linux for human beings" is not good anymore.
Ubuntu is big enough to start being promoted to the people who doesn't even know what is Linux. We should choose a new slogan without the "Linux" word.
And what about something who can be easily translated to many languages?

Don't ship apps with mixed localizations

Apps that have some visible strings missing in the localization in one language should be shipped completely in English to avoid a mix of translated or untranslated strings.
Missing localizations look very unprofessional. Most end users don't know or care about the localization process but should have a convenient experience. That's why Ubuntu should take care of missing localizations and remove localizations that are not finished (or in a reasonable state) from the respective apps.

Internationalize Ubuntu Launchpad bugs submission

A lot of people cannot submit bugs on Launchpad because is it write only in English and because we must submit bugs only in english. Why ? I want to be able to submit a bug on a site in my native language, not in a foreign language.
Imagine how many bugs will not be fix in next Hardy Heron because some people can't speak english. You just need some teams translators for each language, to translate each bugs in non-english submission to english for developers.
N.B. Sorry, for my english... but like you see It's not my native language. May be if it's possible to submit an idea in my native language on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com, it's would better, no ?!

Translate programs descriptions

When I started using Ubuntu with Dapper Drake, one of the things I liked more was the "Add and delete applications" option. But I have seen that most of the applications descriptions are exlusively shown in English. I can read English, but one of the Ubuntu most powerfull features is it's internationalization and the possibility of get most of the information in your local language.
I think that all the descriptions of the apps. should be translated to every languages, so everyone could understand perfectly what that program does.

Graphical GRUB with easy and advanced recover and backup system options
The Ubuntu GRUB would have extra options:
- Backup and recover of the system
- Access to the secondary kernel versions list
- Memory Test
- Recovery Mode.
See the Blueprint below
Blueprint

I developed a Blueprint of how all this would be, making possible the graphical visualization of my ideas. I'm sure that all of it is easy to implement, because the tools to realize these processes already exist.
With this we would have a more organized GRUB, and with options that a lay person would know how to deal with in case of a wrong configuration of the system, recovering it on accessing the essentials backup files of configuration. Or in a worse case, even the entire partition image, where the problem is unrecoverable even with the recovering of the system files.

There is a problem with GPL/LGPL in my country (Russia) and may be in others. Our law dictate to approve only licenses written in the native language but FSF admits only the English variant. So, this problem is slowing down in some manner the convertation of the market to open source in my country. Please fix it!

Better localized Descriptions of Packages in Synaptic

I'm German and I keep hearing Complaints from Friends and Family I converted to Ubuntu, that they don't understand the english Descriptions of the Packages listed in Synaptic.
Some are already translated, but the majority isn't.
So it is important to me, that the Translation of the Descriptions is getting a higher Priority.
I'd help translating, but I never found a possibility to translate the Descriptions for the Packages on Launchpad. It seems to me I can just translate the Program itself (which I do already).

In development

I think, a lot of people like to help with ubuntu development, but they don't know where to start. This includes not only programmers but also designers, music composers or just the normal ubuntu user.
So how about creating a website "howcanihelp.ubuntu.com" where everyone (except for C/C++ programmers ;-) ) can find out how to contribute?
Examples:
PHP Programmer -> help with Brainstorm Development, someproject.ubuntu.com needs a new Website, ...
Music Composer -> (don't know where this should link)
Graphic Artist -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork
Foreign Language Native Speaker -> Translate Subtitles at screencasts.ubuntu.com,...
Beginner Ubuntu User -> (don't know if we find something for them :-) )
Advanced Ubuntu User -> Help people at IRC #ubuntu, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WikiToDo, join the Documentation Team...
Marketing Expert -> ...
and so on!

Not an idea
|
|
I have been hearing from a lot of Ubuntu users (and noticed myself) that most language versions have a lot to be desired. Some texts are missing, some are still in English and some are outright wrong. Even some texts regarding basic usage is left untranslated. In some newer releases I've noticed that a message that was previously fine, is now in English or missing. These can surely be fixed with updates, but I still think Ubuntu's language versions should be better out-of-the-box.
All in all, thanks Ubuntu-team for a great operating system :)

Ubuntu Code name

Isn’t it time to send a message to the community that Ubuntu is not only for English speaking people ?
Without a fluent English you probably cannot be an Ubunbu member, but a lot of people are promoting, using, helping Ubuntu in their own language.
So, what about a code name in Chinese, Spanish, Welsh or Wolof ?

Only install Help files for Users native Language

Under Gutsy the "/usr/share/gnome/help/" directory is 208 MB. For every application there is a help file in many languages. I only need English, someone else may only want Spanish or French. So only install help files for the Users main/native/primary Language.
--With more and more work to create more detailed help files the help file directory is likely to grow quickly above its current 208 MB.
--Under "/usr/share/gnome/help/rhythmbox" if you remove the non english languages you can save 2.9 MB;
Here is a sampling of what I found if you removed the non-english files (I randomly looked at 3 different ones):
/usr/share/gnome/help/rhythmbox 2.9 MB
/usr/share/gnome/help/windows 6.5 MB
/usr/share/gnome/help/about-ubuntu 4.3 MB
--Also since these files are XML files (with a few images), compressing them will greatly reduce the size further. You can use the GZ format which webservers use to reduce bandwidth which the browser auto uncompresses and displays.
I preformed a test by compressing the help directory with gzip "gzip -r --best help" the help directory went from 162.1 MB to 83.6 MB. Thats almost half the size.

You really should have a Spanish version of this... it could make more people participate, so they would be more open to submit new ideas in their own language ... it may feel more comfortable for us, who dont speak english, so good
