More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.
I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!
Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

I hope my phone can remote control my TV,net media, air condition, lampe of my house, Phone can be a general remote control, I think it is very interesting, very practicality, and it's not difficult to become truth by now technology. furthermore, we can integrate the function of TV card to a net card, so the computer will have all function of TV, and can be remote controled by the same control module.

LDAP for Edubuntu

We have just recently supplied schools in Tanzania with 200 Thin Clients on Edubuntu Terminalservers (7.04) in our project Linux4Afrika.
For normal schools this is a great solution. We also want to implement Universities in our project with the next 600 Thin Clients. Therefore Edubuntu should have LDAP support for user management. Best solution would be to ask during installation which kind of authentication (passwd or LDAP).

Make cinelerra available with apt-get.
Very cool non-linear video editor, the only one able to deal with the sound of JVC HDD media files!
OK it's maybe a codec problem, but all the other available non-linear video editors mess it up.

Disable the IPV6 when installing, or at least give the choice to the user:
some Java applets don't deal very much with ipv6, causing the applet not to start / to crash.
To disable ipv6, the module ipv6 has to be blacklisted. And a reboot is necessary. Very bad experience!

Infrastructure Management & Provisioning

One of the things lots of other OS users enjoy and speak highly of are policies and network provisioning. We should be able to do that and one better (due to free software)...
It would be nice if Ubuntu could be configured and tailored en-masse. It would also be really nice if system images could be conceptualized and prepared on a running Ubuntu system, and then burned as an installation image to a disc.
These installation images would be bound to the configuration and design chosen and be used for wide deployment.
Example:
1. Ubuntu or packages are installed that enable broad network management functionality and provisioning.
2. User starts the node configuration tool.
3. User is asked if they wish to connect to a running machine or produce a disc image.
4A. Disc image is chosen, user is asked a series of questions and shown several tree selections and advanced selection/entry dialogs. This would include things like what type of connectivity to the server is desired as well as what kind of desktop and applications are available on the client, whether they are delivered by the server, whether the client is simply to start via netboot or locally installed software, etc...
At the end of the process, the user is asked where they would like to save the install image or burn it.
4B. Running machine is chosen, and the user is then able (once authenticated) to configure a running machine similar in fashion to the dialogs and tree views presented in 4A.
It would be important to allow for the server to maintain a catalog of images generated, provisioned machines and their respective images/configurations.
This could also be used in a community context where somebody prepares images for friends, community and family and maintains them remotely. It would greatly help in distribution as it would allow technical users to usher in a very "ancient" and familiar level of support: The computer friend. Small rings of users connected to a willing and technical user could grow and develop on their own with tools that make it easier for the helpful individual to manage and access the systems.

Universally Consistent User Interface

Apple's OS X operating system is universally acclaimed as the easiest operating system for the average user. This is not due to the attractiveness of the theme or the gel-like interface buttons, but to the universally consistent user interface. In OS X, every program follows a rigid set of interface rules that allow the design concepts of one program to match that of another, allowing new users to simply master one organization of features and use that information across the system. This consistency gives mac its characteristically out-of-the-way design and sense of thorough quality. By giving Ubuntu a similarly universal set of guidelines and enforcing them throughout the system, we can come much much closer to the dream of a universally accessible GNU/Linux system, add polish, and contribute to the greater Free Software movement. I guess what I'm envisioning is a much more strict and detailed version of the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines.

Ubuntu Updates... Stop messing with my grubmenu.lst!

Won't implement

I have a dual boot system with one Windows XP hard drive for gaming and another Ubuntu hard drive for everything else.
Upon downloading and installing kernel updates, it always seems to re-write my grubmenu.lst which removes Windows XP from the boot menu. I then have to manually tweak my grubmenu.lst file so it shows up in the list of boot options.
This is annoying and most n00bs wouldn't know how to fix this.

While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.
So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

When I first started using Ubuntu, the way I heard about it was several links down in a google search for "linux". This is exemplary of the poor exposure that Ubuntu has. We need to spread public awareness about the operating system, through media outlets, online campaigns, and possible tv/radio/billboard spots.
I think that the best place to start would be online campaigns, especially a series of official videos on youtube and other video sites. These should focus less on technical specs and the benefits of open-source, and more on the benefits of switching from Windows while retaining the ability to preform daily tasks. This will be targeting the main bulk of computer users: Microsoft customers who want to email, type, web browse, and don't like paying for an OS. Other facets of this campaign should include spreading the word about Ubuntu to non-tech oriented, high traffic website (myspace, yahoo), getting Ubuntu back as #1 on distrowatch.com, and creating guides in layman's terms so that non tech-savvy people can understand how to preform simple tasks. For example, don't tell people to open xorg.conf; tell them to type in the terminal 'sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf'.
Doing all of this will require a re-mobilization of the Ubuntu marketing team, several people to design a professional looking marketing video, and structure. Once more momentum is generated, the media will be apt to catch on to the trend. However, we want to make sure at all costs that this is positive exposure. Anything negative (eg. Ubuntu is for geeks only) could immensely hurt our image. Physical advertising is harder to get together, but if someone can find an investor, this could be very possible.
A final idea would be to push for Ubuntu in school systems. I know that where I live, the schools are forced to run Windows 2000 because of slow computers and no funds. Ubuntu could both free funds for education and implant knowledge about the system into children, our future consumer base.
Comment back with any ideas on how to improve this.

Wireless Network Access (WPA protected) during the Install!

So far, when installing ubuntu/kubuntu, Ethernet cards are generally detected, as are many wireless cards, but when requesting a DHCP address during the install it isnt able to connect to a wireless Router with password protection in place.
Can you consider adding a facility to connect to a WPA (PSK etc) protected Router during the install so that updates etc can happen without fussy configuration firstly? Most home users have real trouble with the wireless connection side of things. Not being able to see the wireless router in the very first stages of going to install a new OS is quite unnerving.
Protected Wireless Routers (not WEP which is essentially unsecure) at home are becoming the norm now, rather than cat5 cabled Ethernet connections.

Ubuntu is the name chosen for a global project and a distro based on Gnome. Kubuntu is another distro based on kde from the very same project.
I believe they deserve the same support from the project since Gnome and Kde are the most popular desktop manager out there.
It seems quite obvious to me, the project is very much focused on one and only distro, its first baby : ubuntu.
And it shows. Kubuntu web site looks quite poor and unprofessional compared to ubuntu. Most graphic choices like the kdm default theme (even if it's supposed to be a matter of taste) look, again, unprofessional. And finally the whole distro doesn't seem to have the same amount of attention when it comes to details (one example among others: the little thing on ubuntu warning the user about the existence of proprietary drivers for display which does not exist on kubuntu).
I've been told once, like a year ago, by an ubuntu dev that the situation is such because the project doesn't feel like fragmenting its market share.
Whatever is the official position of the project, I don't think you should do things half way.
The Kde project is itself in full evolution with Kde 4. It does deserve full support from ubuntu.
Thank you for reading.

The "About me" utility provided with gnome should be integrated with Pidgin and Evolution. The avatar set there should work as a "global" avatar. The utility should be able to manage the main E-mail address, IM accounts, signatures and everything that is related to the user.
I know, maybe time's not ready for such a pervasive control, but we actually have a lot of identities: let's start thinking about an easy way to rule them all.
