Do not install Ekiga by default   forum
Written by olskar the 20 Jun 08 at 21:04. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?

I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.

Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

remove /usr/games from the environmental path for server
Written by Cwolly the 2 Jun 08 at 14:48. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There should be no reason to include the /usr/games environment path on a server installation. This should not be in the $PATH by default, and serves no purpose other then to weaken security. Please correct me if I'm wrong in this.
I did check debian etch installation $PATH variable, and it does not have /usr/games in it.

Moving this to Server rather then security.

Remove Ekiga, add Compiz Config Setting Manager
Written by days_of_ruin the 22 Jun 08 at 21:56. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Very few people use ekiga smartphone and removing
would free up space for more stuff like compiz
config settings manager. Some people see the compiz
videos on youtube and shouldn't have to download
an app to enable them.

Screenlet / Widget that shows you your CO2 footprint
Written by Primož Papič the 12 Jun 08 at 10:21. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Priority: Low to Medium
Realisation: ?
========================
There were ideas about making Ubuntu more green.
And somehow this came up my mind.

It would be very nice to have a Screenlet or Widget that would show how much CO2 footprint your computer leaves.

It could even automaticly shut the computer down if it was not used for let's say 3 hours.

A good but a bit futuristic feature would also be that this widget screenlet would count my personal CO2 footprint.
Meaning every thing from how much electricity I use in my home and to how much do I use my car. this could be possible if my idea of smart home would be implemented.

It would also be nice if this widget / screenlet would be added by default.

Please comment how much of this idea is realisable.

Promote the "Linux" trademark.
Written by deragon the 15 May 08 at 01:55. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Asus Eee PC runs Xandros. Dell run Ubuntu. The Nokia N810 tablet also run Linux.

What do they have in common? They do not promote the "Linux" trademark. Users never see (as far as I know) the word "Linux" on these systems.

When booting a system with "Ubuntu", the user sees only the "Ubuntu" logo. Nothing suggest that it is a flavor of Linux.

We should help users make the connection between all these systems. Users that purchase the Eee PC should know that they are running Linux. While Xandros and Asus are out of Canonical's control, I believe that Ubuntu should also make its part to promote the "Linux" trademark. I suggest that the splash screen should contain the Logo "Ubuntu" with the words "A Linux Distribution" in much smaller characters, on the lower right corner, just under the name "Ubuntu".

If we can start the initiative to promote the trademark "Linux", public awareness about the OS will increase. By preaching by example, Ubuntu can help the cause and encourage other vendors and distributions to do the same.

Everybody know about Mac and Windows. Many users run Linux in embedded systems, cellphones and soon Asus Motherboards. Yet they will never know it is Linux they are running...

If users are aware that their cellphones are running Linux and we suggest to install Ubuntu on their laptop, they might say "Linux, like on my cellphone?" and make a connection. It will feel more familiar for them and they will associate the name with, hopefully, quality.

Have an optional setting that can be set to let the user confirm an action by pressing a button such as "Allow" instead of having to type his own password in order to confirm an action.

Some people get frustrated by having to type their password. Many would like to just press an "Allow" button instead of typing their password.

I am not proposing to use this by default. I am proposing an option to enable this behavior.

Compose an Ubuntu musical theme (Ubuntu tune)
Written by FranciscoPadillaGarcia the 11 May 08 at 22:43. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I propose a musical theme that is both simple but distinguishable to be associated with the Ubuntu experience. It has to sound well both on synthesized instruments as well as with a full orchestra.

There are many motifs to grab from, among them:

- African or world music.
- New Age.
- Tribal chants.
- The Ubuntu philosophy.
- Freedom.

Music students and composers should send their compositions on a CreativeCommons license to have them voted for by the community.

Once the theme is chosen, its melody can be used as a sound event for login and log out, etc.

Intel's theme is just four notes and it is very distinguishable (played in any instrument). Why can't we have our 4 notes too?

It would really give Ubuntu a professional feel. A sense of belonging, a cult-like feel --in the good sense.

GUI for user-dirs
Written by natureflow the 3 May 08 at 08:42. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The file manager should offer an GUI to edit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs. This file sets the dirs for Desktop, Downloads, Picture, etc.
