Make GNOME and KDE panels more customizeable
Written by JhansonJr the 18 Apr 08 at 23:39. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Create more configuration options for panels on GNOME and KDE. More like Xubuntu or Enlightenment. Enlightenment (E17) has highly customizable panels, which are extremely helpful for those of us who don't want our desktop to look like a Windows or OSX clone.

Alt+F2 home directory
Written by briansvgs the 17 Apr 08 at 17:49. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am not sure whether this is a bug, or should be a proposed feature, but if you open the gnome run dialog (alt+f2), you can type the path to a directory, and it will open that directory when you press enter (example:/home/user). However, if you type ~, which is a shortcut in all file managers and bash to the home directory and press enter, it says that it could not open the location.

Create Log And Permissions When Programs Read, Write In The Importan Directories
Written by eld1e6o the 6 Apr 08 at 09:15. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

I think it's a good idea to anticipate and create tools that allow us to know completely the interaction of programs with important files on our computer. This is due to the need to pre-empt the generation of viruses, trojans and other programs to prevent unwanted at a time are popular in this system (there are ever more)
This would generate a lot of security to linux system, achieving a default very secure proof intruders already minimal cost software resource
Hence arises the need for some changes to the software:
* Create a log of files that modify, read or create programs in directoris system beyond that previously given them permission (sudoers)
- Why? Because many times the programs need to interact with certain important files, and we can not deny all permits, but if we learn that the program is doing at the time.
* Create a level of software that will allow us to interact, block and allow certain programs read or write certain files or directories
- Why? Because any malicious program could with a simple "sudo", "gksu" or "kdsu" deceive and modify or read private information / system, this would create a way to allow for making a soft style "firewall" to archives
* Create levels of privacy for each software, which could be asked the first time that each software tries to create / access to a certain directory. For example, certain programs can create programs that autoinicien, but not modify files in another directory (eg call level 1) while other programs may change the configuration files (/ boot / grub / menu.lst, / etc / X11/xorg.conf, etc.) (level 2)
- Why? To continue with the complete control of what's happening in our PC at home and limit such programs not to add Start (This happens very often, making slower start or shutdown of the system without us knowing about it because)
* In addition, an alternative that can coexist with the former is to create different passwords for different groups, thus ensuring that only altered parts of the system.
This could lead to this system is THE BIGGEST INSURANCE with complete comfort and requirements without hard or use of the processor, which in the future will continue to help run the power system freely without rotkits or anti-virus or anything style that consume time of the processor, memory, etc..

I created a new Guest account, then I stripped it of all user privileges.

Then I found out, that it could access all MY private data files in MY home directory.

Please fix it so that other users cannot read the home directories of other people. This is a breech of privacy.

Home Network Center
Written by nicholas541 the 27 Mar 08 at 17:52. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know that a lot of families have several computers in their house. (eg. the office computer, the kid's computer, the parent's laptops) They want to easily be able to manage all of them at once, without going through all the complicated server setups. There should be something that easily enables home users to access all the computer's in the house so that they can install software or update them all at once, see logs of what users do (like websites they visit), check how full the hard drives are, run backups, check disk "health" and more things like those. It would let the parents manage everything at once on any of the computers. Then have it all integrated into a "Network Management" application.

Disable Screensaver while playing movies or slideshows
Written by Wiplash4 the 27 Mar 08 at 21:55. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
It is unnerving to touch buttons when the screensaver runs while a movie is playing.

Developer comments
The default media player, Totem, already does this. If an application does not do this then please file a bug with that application in Launchpad.

Synaptic Version Restore
Written by guyminuslife the 26 Mar 08 at 18:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently, if you upgrade a package from a third-party repository (for instance, Sid), Synaptic cannot automatically downgrade it to a stable, supported version--you have to uninstall it and reinstall it from the Ubuntu repository. This can cause problems, especially if you try upgrading something with a lot of dependencies and want to bring it back to a stable version. I propose an option to allow Synaptic to "restore" packages and to the latest official Ubuntu release.

It would also downgrade packages that depend on a specific version of another package, or prompt the user to remove them if they are not in the official repositories.

I've used Ubuntu for about four releases now, and I could not do without it. It's cost me nothing, and I've benefited greatly from it.

I would love the opportunity to 'subscribe' to Ubuntu (or other projects in Launchpad), and donate a small amount of money to the project each month.

This money should be charged to my Paypal, then associated with my Launchpad account. I should then be able to review a list of Requests For Funding, weigh their merits, and transfer already-donated funds to projects that I deem worthwhile.

There should be a Funding tab in Launchpad to help me find projects needing support. It should essentially be a queue of requests from different projects, each with a target amount. Open-ended funding requests should not be allowed. There should also be a limit on the number of requests allowable each month from a project.

If I don't visit Launchpad in a set period of time - for instance, 6 months - my donations should be automatically allocated to a global project pot managed by community vote.

It's important that I be able to name my own price and payment schedule.

Also, once I've made my donation, it should be non-refundable. We wouldn't want people using Launchpad as a bank account.

Finally, some form of recognition as an active donor or subscriber on my Launchpad profile would be welcome, but there shouldn't be any additional benefits to donating money. Some people have nothing to give.

Centralized utility server (scanners, printers etc)
Written by David Nordin the 24 Mar 08 at 08:02. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd very much love to be able to have a client (or server) put in a central place, such as my kitchen or hallway.
To that computer I'd connect a scanner and my main printer (or multifunction device) with full functionality over the network. Perhaps even CD and DVD burning could be remotely used here.

***Update - I believe this has been fixed/implemented***

In Gutsy we had the ability to synchronize our computer clock with that of an internet server, to keep accurate time.

With Hardy Heron, that feature has been lost. :(

This may not seem like a big deal, but it is, because daylight savings time came early for us. My Ubuntu clock is two hours behind, because the new timezone clock feature thinks it's a different time. If I could synchronize with an internet server, I could fix this problem.

----------------------------------------------
http://tf.nist.gov/service/its.htm

Set Your Computer Clock Via the Internet
NIST Internet Time Service (ITS)

The NIST Internet Time Service (ITS) allows users to synchronize computer clocks via the Internet. The time information provided by the service is directly traceable to UTC(NIST). The service responds to time requests from any Internet client in several formats including the DAYTIME, TIME, and NTP protocols.

Separate system icons and app icons in stray
Written by pepe3r the 21 Mar 08 at 13:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it would be great a little separation between system icons (sound, network, energy, bluetooth...) and app icons in system tray.

An example:

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/459/separaciontrayan0.png

By the way, it would be perfect to integrate volume control into the system tray instead a different applet (perhaps a different idea??)

I'm not sure if this is fixed by using PulseAudio but i find the volume control in gnome is way too linear. Because of this the user has very little control with extreme loud and quiet volumes. For example, when reducing the volume it will decrease to a certain level then suddenly just go silent. Much more control would be given with a logarithmic scale.

This page explains it much better: http://sound.westhost.com/project01.htm

Automatically start virtual keyboard or virtual mouse when one is not detected
Written by gQuigs the 20 Mar 08 at 19:11. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I start the Ubuntu LiveCD and my keyboard or mouse isn't detected that is very annoying. We cannot expect people to know shortcut keys to start a mouse, or how to turn the on-screen keyboard on.

No Keyboard, but mouse: start on-screen keyboard
No Mouse, but keyboard: enable numlock keys as mouse, alert user of how to turn on and off

If both are not detected we don't have any good options but we can still tell them that we haven't detected a keyboard or mouse.

Create a tortoisesvn-like program for Version Control Systems
Written by silwol the 21 Mar 08 at 06:57. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I use Bazaar, Subversion, CVS, Git, Mercurial etc. I have to use the command-line or some standalone gui program. This is a lot of overhead because I usually do have a nautilus window open which is showing the working directory.
I would like to have an application which integrates fine into nautilus and has similar capabilities like tortoisesvn has for windows - see http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/ExplorerIntegration.html for some screenshots.
Of course this new application should not be installed by default because it confuses new users. It would be nice if there could be one single application that supports many backends for different version control systems.

Mint style Safety-level for upgrades
Written by forkmantis the 19 Mar 08 at 14:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I like the idea of rating upgrades, and allowing users the choice of risk level they want to take when performing upgrades. Linux Mint has implemented a system like this, and I'd love to see it in ubuntu:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint

MintUpdate: Update-software designed specifically for Mint. MintUpdate assigns updates a safety-level (from 1 to 5), based on the stability and necessity of the update. Updates can be set to notify users (as is normal), be listed but not notify, or be hidden by default. In addition to including updates specifically for the Mint distro, the development team tests all package-wide updates. This system is designed to prevent inexperienced users from installing updates that are unnecessary or require a certain level of knowledge to configure properly. MintUpdate is currently in beta 1.5 and will be included in the next Mint release. If mintInstall is used to install a program from the default repositories, that program is able to receive updates via mintUpdate.[1]

Better Support for Multi-Core Processors
Written by spyyder the 18 Mar 08 at 19:46. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We have dual-core, and quad-core processors now, how much are we taking advantage of this additional power. Also we could provide better development tools to take advantage of multi-core processors.

OSS should lead the way in parallel processing, not just playing catch-up. We still don't even take advantage of the fact that most modern processors are now 32/64 hybrid. OS X can run 32/64/PPC(Rosetta) architecture all on the same box. Yes it is difficult, but a discussion should be started on what kind of work could be done in this area.

Submissions of cons and positives for an idea
Written by Auzy the 17 Mar 08 at 14:18. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently, every idea is biased. Their description only says the positives. The only way to see the negatives currently are comments, which requires going into the link (takes time). But there are so many duped comments, it makes things hard..

Instead, each idea should have a list of cons and positives associated with it, so that all the pro's and negs are grouped together, are more succinct, you don't need to go through 10 comments which all say the same thing (if they are listed as a +, you wont bother submitting a second +), and allows people to make a better decision, without reading 30 comments of "good idea +1", or "my idea is similar too, vote for it (idea 1)".

Brainstorm is too biased at the moment, and so people are voting for things which are just downright stupid, had they known the facts.

An example is setting EXT4 to default filesystem. Lots of people vote +1 because they don't realise that EXT4 is not even stable yet. Had they been able to access the pros and cons without needing to go inside the link (ie, use ajax to show them), they are more likely to make an informed decision, and less likely to vote for ideas, which will end up being marked as closed because it does not technically make sense.

Comments should be just for simple discussion. We need a better way to organise the cons and +'s

Recalled hardware notification Applet
Written by Auzy the 17 Mar 08 at 14:33. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Hardware gets recalled all the time, and often people don't realise its happening, which put their system at risk, and in the case of harddisks, their data at risk. Lets make it so they can.

The best protection we can offer our users, which no other operating systems offer, is the ability to identify hardware which has been potentially recalled, and inform the user that a recall of their component has been made.

It should be easy to code support for a lot of devices (just check the embedded device and vendor id's using HAL, against a database with links to the recall). And the gnome applet isn't brain surgery to code either.

And it only needs to run once a month or once every fortnight, so its very low overhead. But its the small things like this that makes a big difference to users. Wouldn't you like to know if your harddisk has possibly been recalled? I would. Better then waking up and having smart tell me when the drive is doomed and cant survive backup anyway.
