Single Computer Manager
Written by chig00 the 19 Apr 08 at 19:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The idea is to have single computer manager similar to current system monitor, but with more accent on controlling and wider coverage of functions.
It should consist of two parts. First one is Process Manager where you can see parameters of each process and control them. This include
* Execution management: adjusting niceness of process, probably also include control of how much of processor time task can use, how many and which cores of processor it can use.
* Memory management which allow to see how much and which memory does task use, and set limit on maximum usage, when task exceeds maximum amount kernel could either shutdown task or map all exceeding memory to swap, or just ask user on what to do.
* Sound management where user can control sound parameters such as hardware used to output sound, volume level and equalizer effects.
* Network management using which user can specify which connection to use and how much of bandwidth to allocate for task.
* Hard drive IO priority
* Screen management where program can be specified to use some specific geometry/color space to use.
* Input blocking from some input devices (keyboard mouse joystick wheel)

Second part is Hardware Manager where user can see system health status, modify parameters such as fan speeds, mounting/unmounting drives, devices, manually put some hardware in sleep mode, control processor speed, CD-ROM speed etc.

My view is that this should be implemented first in linux kernel for example using /proc file system, and then just have some controlling software with GUI.

Anjuta should works out of the box
Written by xoen the 1 Apr 08 at 15:57. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
I've installed it, but if I try to create a "new project" what I have is an "autogen is not installed" message, so I've discovered it when I was offline and without the possibility to install autogen.

The user that install anjuta install it because he want to write, compile, debug, profile, etc, code, Don't matter what it's needed, it should installed as dependency of anjuta.

Manual Full Disk Encryption
Written by scubanator87 the 31 Mar 08 at 14:53. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When using the alternate install CD i can easily do a "Guided" method of full disk encryption. However, this defaults me to a single partition using ext3. I don't particularly care for ext or for a single partition for my root/home.
Now i can easily change it to something like XFS or JFS after i create it but i cant break up the LVM into two so that way i can have separate home and root partitions.
If i choose to do a manual set up, i cant create an encrypted system since it complains about there not being a defined root partition. However i cant seem to figure out (after trying just about all choices) as to manually create one.

So i propose that when using the guided it actually let you change the settings it suggest before following through with them then changing them.

And to add manual support for creating encrypted/lvm partitions.

Side note:
It would be great to see encryption in the desktop edition since it is already in the server and alternate editions. Think of all the laptops this could protect?

The Avant-Window-Manager is now on the repositories, but it's extras applets are not. AWN is not too much useful without them.

to use them we must download the sources and compile.

Mouse Wheel Acceleration
Written by comrade the 27 Mar 08 at 22:49. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Using a mouse wheel to scroll in Windows has always had acceleration, so the faster you move the wheel the more the scroll distance increases.

Mouse cursor movement uses (configurable) acceleration, so I can't understand why this feature is lacking in the wheel (admittedly as with all other distros to my knowledge)

I find this provides a much more responsive feel to using the scroll wheel in any application, especially in a web browser

ONE Window Gimp
Written by maknu the 26 Mar 08 at 21:17. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gimp is a great graphics editor we all know. Congratulations to all developpers!

My Idea:
- Adding a Selection for "Using Gimp in one Window"

IMPORTANT
- That should NOT be default, but an option, which doesn't go in trouble for users liking this multi window management with its advantages!

I guess that more than 20% of the gimp users where really happy for this important feature. I know that Gimpshop and other Plugins are available, but this couldn't be the end solution. Gimp should bring this "little" feature with it in future! Thanks!

Make the computer give me answers
Written by Eldmannen the 26 Mar 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.
RAM? = Random access memory
91*74-26 = 6708
Capital of Sweden? = Stockholm
22 inch in centimeter = 55.88 centimeter
chemical formula for water? = H2O
#0000ff = shows the color blue
01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 = hello
68 65 6C 6C 6F = hello
Hello in Italian? = ciao
Time in Tokyo? = 19:46
Weather in Paris? = 7°C, sunny.
rot13 hello = uryyb

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

refine evolution
Written by mangar the 26 Mar 08 at 11:32. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Evolution is sort of nice, but needs tons of work in order to be a competitive PIM.

for example, some actions can be:

1. remove week view, it is redundant to work week view, and provides less information.
2. integrate search-as-you-type.
3. switching between views it terribly slow.
4. Imap sync is problematic - synchronizing with google's imap gets you 3 junk email folders, 3 trash folders, etc.
5. add a counter to the number of items in each category, and the number of unread items. (in the left-side view).
6. remove the word "search" before the search filter, move it to the toolbar.
7. improve sync. with mobile devices.
8. Imap synch is very slow, compared to, for example, outlook.
9. fix the weather calendar to support countries other than the US. if not possible, remove it from evolution, and use an ical subscription.
10. allow easy access to additional ical subscriptions.
11. add smart calendaring formatting (like google calendar).
12. don't change the view when selecting a day in the mini month calendar. (very annoying. when I want to see what happens in the week a month from now, for example).
13. wrap around mail headers when using horizontal mode - currently the headers are not warper, but truncated, and the headers become very hard to read.
14. add clearer separators between the message headers.
15. allow adding more data sources for eds, so it will serve as the desktop personal data server
16. allow face browsing from contacts.
17. allow separation for components, for those of use that like to be able to view tasks and mail on the same time,
communication between the components can be done by using dbus, or simply querying eds

1. add a filter bar (similar to finder/ explorer)
2. add tab support (optional)
3. convert the zoom button to a slider, move to buttom left
4. move view mode to the left of the slider, convert to buttons.
5. add "eject" button next to removable media.
6. see ubuntuforums url for mock-up

System icons, please
Written by vexorian the 23 Mar 08 at 17:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A quick comparison between Konqueror's way on icon customization and Nautilus' way:

When you decide to change a file's or launcher's icon in Konqueror, the first icons you find are a bunch of system icons that depend on the theme, and thus if you later change the theme the icon you picked can change as well.

On Nautilus, the story is different, you are given directly an open file dialog and you must find the icon file yourself. Even if you manage to find icons this way, it is simple not possible to pick a theme-dependent icon from the GUI. I have had to resort to hacking the .desktop file with a text editor to accomplish so.

Therefore, I guess it is not hard to guess what this brainstorm is suggesting to change in Nautilus' behavior.

Erase old ideas!
Written by loveandequalityforall the 21 Mar 08 at 22:04. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Erase ideas that you have created in Ubuntu Brainstorm.

Erase old or unwelcome ideas that one has submitted in Ubuntu Brainstorm or as suggested by some voters to create a category for "unwelcome" or "old" ideas to have for future reference to help create better ideas!

I frequently use both Tomboy for my note taking and Labyrinth for my mind mapping. Both programs cover such similar necessities to me that it would be just natural to access them both from a single program.

Here's a mockup of what I have in mind:

A complete application for handling archives
Written by Chronos the 20 Mar 08 at 16:43. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I miss from Ubuntu a complete application, what is well integrated(for all supported types associated), massive, and has a lot of functions, fast, and relyable for handling even big archives and lots of parts. I like 7zip as a program, but running it in wine is quite complicated. In windows i used a few, but they are not free softwares.
I would use in a program like this:
-conversion, from a format to another
-testing(crc)
-svf, md5, sha1 ect checking
-extraction from broken archive
-opening dvd and cd iso formats(for reading would be fine)
-repair broken archives where possible
-handle passwords for each archive, and make this painless for the user
-support for integrating in file managers

windows behaviour improvement
Written by francois the 15 Mar 08 at 12:25. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't want the default size of a window to be screen-sized when it is unmaximized.
Two reasons:

1: If I want a window to be fullscreen, I click the maximize button. Now if I click on unmaximize, the window should have a small size in the center of the screenand it should not be sized to the size of the screen!

2: When the window has this size it is often too large for the screen and the right edge of the window exceed on the workspace on the right (especially with compiz enabled)
It causes focus problems for that window : if you click on the "taskbar" to unminimize the window, only the right edge of that window appears on the left of the desktop. It is really annoying.

What's more (but less important) with compiz enabled, you should not see the drop shadow of a maximized window on the next workspace.

Does anyone feel this problem like me?
If this was fixed, I think it would be a great step forward in terms of usability.

(sorry for my english)

Eye Of Gnome
Written by Jimbo99 the 13 Mar 08 at 23:41. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Eye of gnome image viewer should permit me to grab the image using a hand tool so I can move around and view the other non-viewable parts without forcing me to use the scroll bars. This is so basic and fundamental I can't believe it was not implemented long ago.

Persuade Amazon to make mp3 download plugin for Rhythmbox /Amarock
Written by belovedmonster the 12 Mar 08 at 10:31. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Having the new Amazon mp3 download software is a great first step. But what we need to persuade Amazon to do is create a version of the downloader that works directly in our music applications via a plugin, so you can purchase music directly in your application much the same way you can purchase tunes directly from iTunes.

Less screensavers
Written by programad the 11 Mar 08 at 15:24. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!

WHAT THE HELL!

Who need that amount of screensavers?

I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?

Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?

For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.
