Currently, if you upgrade a package from a third-party repository (for instance, Sid), Synaptic cannot automatically downgrade it to a stable, supported version--you have to uninstall it and reinstall it from the Ubuntu repository. This can cause problems, especially if you try upgrading something with a lot of dependencies and want to bring it back to a stable version. I propose an option to allow Synaptic to "restore" packages and to the latest official Ubuntu release.

It would also downgrade packages that depend on a specific version of another package, or prompt the user to remove them if they are not in the official repositories.

It would make ubuntu much less intimidating for windows server admins if there was a gui which allowed configuation of common network services such as:

web
ssh
mail
database
vpn
dhcp
ldap
dns

Some of these are easier than others but I have seen very little work on this front and I think it will help win over windows admins.

Having the new Amazon mp3 download software is a great first step. But what we need to persuade Amazon to do is create a version of the downloader that works directly in our music applications via a plugin, so you can purchase music directly in your application much the same way you can purchase tunes directly from iTunes.

Currently the Eclipse packages in Ubuntu lack heavily behind other distributions like lets say Fedora.
The packages in ubuntu are outdated and so are the eclipse language plugins like CDT or Pydev.

Properly supporting this top notch IDE should give new linux developers an easier start.

GIMP can open lots of file formats.
But Eye of GNOME can open less, why?
This is dumb.

I propose some kind of framework or library in the system that applications can use to access file formats.

This would make all applications be able to support all file formats, and would make it easier to code application software, because it would require less time and code since the developer wouldn't have to use different libraries and write support for file formats manually himself.

All audio software can handle all audio file formats.
All graphics software can handle all graphics file formats.
All video software can handle all video file formats.

Then I can download an update for the system library which adds support for new file formats, and suddenly my old applications gained support for new file formats without I even have to update them.

Make a new application or improve Beagle, Tracker or Deskbar.

It do acronym lookups, math calculation, fact lookup, data generation, unit conversion, etc.

So that when I ask it something, it answers me.

So right from the Deskbar (or something) on the desktop, I can ask something, and it will answer me.

When using the alternate install CD i can easily do a "Guided" method of full disk encryption. However, this defaults me to a single partition using ext3. I don't particularly care for ext or for a single partition for my root/home.
Now i can easily change it to something like XFS or JFS after i create it but i cant break up the LVM into two so that way i can have separate home and root partitions.
If i choose to do a manual set up, i cant create an encrypted system since it complains about there not being a defined root partition. However i cant seem to figure out (after trying just about all choices) as to manually create one.

So i propose that when using the guided it actually let you change the settings it suggest before following through with them then changing them.

And to add manual support for creating encrypted/lvm partitions.

Side note:
It would be great to see encryption in the desktop edition since it is already in the server and alternate editions. Think of all the laptops this could protect?

For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

The reason for this is to unclutter Ubuntu Brainstorm.

Some ideas submitted are not applicable, or are already existing although the poster didn't know about them.

It should be possible mark an idea for deletion instead of just voting it down, but it should be well distinguished from voting down an idea. Perhaps users must click on the idea to be able to mark it for deletion.

I created a new Guest account, then I stripped it of all user privileges.

Then I found out, that it could access all MY private data files in MY home directory.

Please fix it so that other users cannot read the home directories of other people. This is a breech of privacy.

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

I dislike a lot that the system makes a hidden folder "/trash" in the USB, floppy and others ... The erasure should be direct in these elements because it is very confusing to have this hidden folder storing it erases not even know it

Often when using LaTeX, special LaTeX-Packages are needed.
However there is no easy way to find the LaTeX-Package from within the Package-Management-Software. You need to know in which of the Ubuntu-Packages the LaTeX-Package is located first.
Thus an option inside the Package-Management to search for LaTeX-Packages would be really handy.
Even better would be if the package in need could be acquired from the editor of choice like a needed codec for totem.

When I use Bazaar, Subversion, CVS, Git, Mercurial etc. I have to use the command-line or some standalone gui program. This is a lot of overhead because I usually do have a nautilus window open which is showing the working directory.
I would like to have an application which integrates fine into nautilus and has similar capabilities like tortoisesvn has for windows - see http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/ExplorerIntegration.html for some screenshots.
Of course this new application should not be installed by default because it confuses new users. It would be nice if there could be one single application that supports many backends for different version control systems.

As a user I want to be able to listen to audio or watch videos with the least amount of setup. I would like to have a single interface (Codec Manager) that lists all of the most common audio and video formats and shows me if I am missing the necessary codec for playback.

Use Case: Enable MP3 playback.
Precondition: MP3s are not currently playable.
1. User logs into the system.
2. User opens the Codec Manager.
3. System displays a list of common audio/video formats.
4. User selects MP3s.
5. System displays some info about MP3s.
6. System displays a list of available codecs.
7. User selects a codec and clicks Apply.
8. System downloads and installs the selected codec.
9. System informs the user when completed.

Other possible features:
- Display a list of audio/video types that are missing codecs.
- An auto-setup function, that grabs the recommended codec for all formats.

Audio and Video formats that should be supported:

Audio:
- MP3
- OGG
- AAC
- FLAC
- Real Audio

Video:
- MP4

I think more Windows users would try out Ubuntu if they could just double click an .exe file instead of going into a command prompt, browsing to the folder and then typing "wine *.exe" to install the program.

I like how Ubuntu adds shortcuts on the desktop and the "start menu" after you install the program making it easy to run but installing Windows software needs to be easier.

Gimp is a great graphics editor we all know. Congratulations to all developpers!

- That should NOT be default, but an option, which doesn't go in trouble for users liking this multi window management with its advantages!

I guess that more than 20% of the gimp users where really happy for this important feature. I know that Gimpshop and other Plugins are available, but this couldn't be the end solution. Gimp should bring this "little" feature with it in future! Thanks!

We have dual-core, and quad-core processors now, how much are we taking advantage of this additional power. Also we could provide better development tools to take advantage of multi-core processors.

OSS should lead the way in parallel processing, not just playing catch-up. We still don't even take advantage of the fact that most modern processors are now 32/64 hybrid. OS X can run 32/64/PPC(Rosetta) architecture all on the same box. Yes it is difficult, but a discussion should be started on what kind of work could be done in this area.

When i change some hardware pieces i need to configure them manually, ubuntu should recognize there has been a hardware change and configure it.
