There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Have a usable machine with 256MB of RAM
Written by Hawke the 29 Feb 08 at 00:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While it is common for modern machines to have at least a GiB of memory, older machines (2-3 years old) are (or IMO should be) a major target audience for Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, having 256MB of memory makes the machine almost entirely unusable for more than one task at a time.

Even the "minimalist" xubuntu is barely usable with this amount of memory.

I think Ubuntu should do some work on reducing memory usage to this level, at least for the xubuntu variant.

Support popular types of games
Written by Kent88 the 3 Mar 08 at 00:13. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
People like games, and while Linux has done very well with the card games, minesweeper and tetris type games, lets get some games that people can really get excited about.

How about starting or supporting one each of a
1)First Person Shooter (FPS)
2)Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG)
3)Real Time Strategy Game (RTS)
4)Other popular game types that Linux lacks (Other people, submit your ideas)

I have seen these types of games on linux, and some of them have been pretty good, but not many people know about them. Start new or support existing game projects that work on most Linux platforms, and make them something to be excited about.

If we can have Linux games that people are excited about and like playing we will have less and less need for WINE and dual-boot machines. (although I personally appreciate the WINE developers, they work really hard).

Ubuntu Home Server for Home Users and Small Businesses Alike
Written by LFenton the 29 Feb 08 at 12:49. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
What I would like to see from Canonical is an Ubuntu Home Server similar to that of Microsoft's Home Server solution with ease of setup and use as well as the ability to back up workstations on a small network like WHS (Windows Home Server) does. But without the 10 client limitation that WHS server currently has, as well as the ability to easily securely and remotely connect for multimedia content use while working from a remote location. It should be streamlined and easy to setup, maintain and implement both on the server and client(s) side of Ubuntu.
Thank you.

Developer comments
Creating such a product requires work on both the server and the desktop experience of Ubuntu. The final product integrates different components that are currently worked on, such as simple remote server administration, easy backup solution for desktops.

Most of the basic buildings blocks are already available (such as samba/nfs for file sharing and network authentication, avahi for service discovery). Once the others one are built, integration work can begin.

Defining which services or features should be provided and use cases would help.

Provide an official live 'gaming' repository
Ubuntu

Many games feature the ability to play with other people. However, the first thing the game will check for is to see if it is currently up to date. When Ubuntu enters version freeze, the games fall out of date, and it can be harder to play them online without finding a 3rd party update or compiling it yourself (Freeciv, Scorched3D, and Battle for Wesnoth to name a few). This also creates issues when different distributions freeze at different times, so it can be hard to play with other Linux users.

Ubuntu should provide a repository for up to date games for games that will always need the latest version to play online.

Use PS3 to gain massive market share.
Written by ethana2 the 3 Mar 08 at 08:57. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I estimate that there are more PlayStation 3 machines in people's home's than PPC and intel macs combined. By taking full advantage of this, Ubuntu could theoretically grow to a larger market share than mac OSX, which would put it on the proverbial radar in a very serious way.

As of now the Ubuntu PS3 port is struggling. I recommend that Canonical reassess the value of this port and really throw their might behind it. Not only that, but I think Ubuntu should use the opportunity to implement a few features that could make it the best gaming OS on earth, such as qjoypad integration and a gaming-mode wherein all processes not related to the task at hand are hibernated to swap while a game or, say, fullscreen blender, runs.

Windows is why people are running from the PC for their gaming. Let them run to us. Let them not be disappointed. ...Let them wonder why they even bother with windows.

In addition, Sony has done something great by letting us use the PS3 to run our own code. Let them be envied for it.

Encourage Ubuntu preloads in university computer stores
Written by telluric the 10 Mar 08 at 03:55. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have not heard of a single university computer store that carries _any_ type of Linux preloads.

Exposure to Ubuntu is a great educational experience due to the lack of artificial barriers to learning about the underlying system (source is available). The fact that preloaded machies are not commonly available runs counter to a university's central mission.

The popularity of MacOS on university campuses in the 1990's was largely due to aggressive educational discounts and dealmaking.

What would it take to change this??

OpenOffice with (real) native GTK
Written by fragro the 11 Mar 08 at 11:07. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.

Partner with big name game developers
Written by heavyal the 29 Feb 08 at 22:32. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is total pie in the sky but it would be great to see some kind of partnership with the big gaming companies such as EA, Blizzard, Bethesda or some such where we could actually work with them in bringing their outstanding game releases to our platform.

Developer comments
This cannot be done just by the Ubuntu community or Canonical alone. The only true way to achieve any action by the big commercial game developers is to have (lots and lots of) individual gamers contact the support-teams of those companies and demand that they want to be able to play their games natively on their Ubuntu machines. They have to point out that native really means a native port and not one of those half-hearted wine-solutions. id Software and Epic can do it so it cannot be that hard. There are even first rumours that Valve is planning to port their Source-engine natively to Linux.

---
I don't think Wine ports count as "half-hearted". When Wine supports the application, a Wine port is fully functional and full speed - what more could you want?

Use a better variety of default apps for Kubuntu
Written by Kent88 the 4 Mar 08 at 00:35. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Kubuntu seems to "KDE Pure". Don't get me wrong, I like KDE and a lot of their applications, but when I boot up Kubuntu from a liveCD and I don't see Firefox or Thunderbird, two really big open source programs, I start to wonder.

It would be like having KOffice instead of OpenOffice, OpenOffice is recognized as THE open source office suite, whether the person is migrating from windows or mac, or even most other linux versions. KOffice may or may not be good, but people migrating over probably want OpenOffice.

People may not be familiar with Konqueror as a web browser, or they may know how they like to set Thunderbird up and not want to start using Kmail instead. Pigden/Gaim is probably more recognizable than Kopete.

I like KDE applications, like Amorak, Konqueror is a good file manager. I could go on, but the point is that Kubuntu with KDE could be a more pleasant experience if we add some more non-KDE applications.

Option to blank CD-RW's in Nautilus Burner
Written by lszanto the 3 Apr 08 at 10:16. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have found that whenever I am trying to blank a cd I have to go through all different programs to do so, I know Brasero is included in 8.04 which has this option but it would be a nifty feature to be able to quickly blank a cd in the nautilus burner.

Work for interoperability with existing educational software
Written by Kent88 the 3 Mar 08 at 00:22. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am a university student, and I run a dual-boot machine solely because some university software will only run on windows or mac (mostly just windows). I'm not just talking about an office suite, there are other things, like lab paper submission software, special software used in engineering, math, and other classes.

Find out from universities what type of software their students need for classes. Work with these companies for real native Linux versions. I don't care if I pay a license fee for it, I just want to be able to do my homework without booting to windows.

Improve 3rd party software forum
Written by Kent88 the 3 Mar 08 at 02:48. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the forum, have a section for 3rd party software with it's forum hosted in a dual-effort with that software project's forum.

Example: If someone has a firefox question, have them able to access the same forum whether they go through mozilla or ubuntu forums, so that they can get help from both communities.

This can help both Ubuntu and the software developers improve their software and how well it fits in with Ubuntu.

Anyone with ideas how to organize it, please suggest in a comment.
