GNOME a misfit for default Ubuntu
Written by KenP the 1 May 09 at 05:23. Global category: Others. Not an idea
Current default Ubuntu is based on GNOME. This, in my opinion, makes the look and feel drastically different to Windows. In fact, its too much of a Mac clone. These two factors make it seem highly alien to the Windows crowd. Hence, we haven't seen significant migration of Windows users to Ubuntu yet (after 10 releases.)

Solution #1: Release default Ubuntu with KDE4
Written by KenP the 1 May 09 at 05:23.
My proposal is to base the default Ubuntu on KDE4 and give it the same love as currently being given to GNOME-based Ubuntu. My belief is that it will attract far more converts than the current desktop is doing. KDE4 provides a radically different look and feel and yet seems oddly familiar to a Windows user.

Oh btw, Kubuntu is fine, but its more of an ornament right now, especially since it will never get pre-installed on a commercially distributed laptop or netbook. However, I am not knocking the hard-working Kubuntu developers. In fact, I am a regular user of Kubuntu myself.

Solution #2: Create preinstall image that allows user to select KDE/Gnome
Written by lavinog the 1 May 09 at 16:41.
Some OEM installations of windows are not fully installed until the user first boots the computer.
For preinstalled Ubuntu: Make an installation image that gives the new user a choice of which flavor of Ubuntu to install with a description of the differences for each.
The description can also explain how Gnome is more like a mac, and KDE is more like Windows.
