Updateable/Upgradanle installer in Alpha/Beta-testing
Written by Jimmyfj the 12 Jan 10 at 16:35. Related project: Live CD installer. New

For the latest four or five releases of Ubuntu I've been runing the test-version from the first Alpha-release up till the final release which I've then been running till the next Aplha is released. And in this writing moment I'm running Lucid Lynx in its current Alpha which I believe is still Alpha 1.

In running the test releases it happens that the system simply crashes due to any number of reasons. And it is with regard to the well known fact that I suggest that the developers makes the installer upgradable in a way so that one doesn't have to download the ISO file from the latest build every time a crash occurs but simply have to take the existing Alpha install cd and have the installer automatically check for any updates in Alpha version or for the installer itself.

I've seen that done in Sabayon GNU/Linux so it's doable without too much trouble.

Solution #1: Automatic installer update/upgrade
Written by Jimmyfj the 12 Jan 10 at 16:35.

Sabayon GNU/Linux has this neat feature of upgrading the installer before proceeding with the installation itself. We need a similar feature in the installer for all Alpha/Beta/RC releases to make life easier for the community of Beta-testers.

We know that crashes will occur in the test period and to save people from having to create new install cd's with the latest release this could be done via the installer once the existing Alpha or Beta release is booted.

An extra menu-point with the opportunity to update/upgrade the installer to ensure the install of the latest release is installed. It's double work if one first have to install say the Alpha 3 release only to have half the files written over by newer files. The job of sorting files is thus a job for the installer, not the user.

To do this there could be produced a net-install-cd only for use by the beta-tester community. This net-installer should be able to fetch the latest files for download.

I'd rather sit and wait for the install to finish than stare at a graphical interface kept alive by movement of the mouse to prevent the screen saver from activating every five minute.

With a net-install for beta-testers we will also benefit from even more users participation.
