Like the title says, I want to turn off my monitor sometimes. With a hotkey. Complete with LCD backlight. Sure, you can usually do it by pressing the power key, but on a laptop you've got to close the lid, and sometimes I want to turn off the montitor without closing the lid, for example, when I'm using the notebook as a substitute audio player. Conserving the energy, yet having access to back/forward/volume/etc...

If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas.

I would like to see support for Shoutcast Internet Radio stations added to Rhythmbox.

This is currently my favorite feature in Amarok, Rhythmbox's KDE equivalent. Rhythmbox's Internet Radio selection is rather pathetic in comparison and the current configuration forces me to hunt down the address of and add each of my favorite stations individually, rather than searching the entire station listing internally as with Amarok.

With proper MTP support being added with Hardy, I am finally able to use my MP3 player with Linux again. I have switched back to Rhythmbox, but find myself missing this feature. Perhaps this could be handled in a layout similar to the LastFM plugin?

Thank you.

New users coming from Windows are often disoriented and don't really know the real advantages of Ubuntu or even how to use some of its basic functions (Add/Remove instead of setup.exe). An orientation would help them.

A couple of ideas for how to help them have come up, including an idea about having pop-ups for every new application that's open. The pop-up idea has a few downsides, of course, not the least of which being that pop-ups are annoying to many users, both new and experienced.

One relatively unobtrusive way to introduce new users to the basic functions of Ubuntu is to show a slideshow during the installation process. New users would probably watch the slideshow (they're waiting for the installation to finish--what else are they going to do?), while experienced users might have the option to turn off the slideshow... or they may just get up and leave, knowing that the installation won't take more than fifteen minutes.

I think that we must have a GUI for ipv6 configuration.
Other distributions like Fedora or OpenSUSE, OSX and even MS Vista already have it. IPv4 is dying, ISP's are beginning to distribute IPv6 adresses for 2~3 years and DNS root servers have recently switch to v6 too.
Ubuntu should be ready for the Internet of today and tomorrow and integrate IPv6 (fixed, dhcpv6, RA, ...) in the GNOME 'Network Settings' (and the same in KDE) as soon as possible.

Support for Zoomable User Interface (ZUI), as a different way of having virtual desktops.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zooming_User_Interface

This could be implemented as a compiz-fusion plugin.
Compiz-fusion already has a plugin for zooming in while still being able to use the input (mouse/keyboard), but none for zooming out. This would be extremely useful in low-res devices (the eeepc for example).

Having a way to "set zoom level to fit selected window" (maximize it) Would make this easier to use. Just zoom out, overview your virtual desktop and zoom in on what you want to work on next.

I don't mean this suggestion to be a duplicate of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/388/ "Multitouch support and zoomable interface". That idea mixes two notions: multitouch and zoomable user interface. While both are a good idea multitouch support will be limited by hardware support and by Apple's patents on the subject.

It's currently way too difficult to set up fonts and input editor for languages such as Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.

Take a look at this complicated HOWTO:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Japanese_Input_and_Fonts_in_Ubuntu_7%2e10

Setting up SCIM / SKIM should be easy regardless of what language you log in with. Many people need to use multiple languages.

In Windows, all you need to do is open the Regional Settings and check the languages you want and possibly insert the original disc.

In addition, the fonts installed for CJK by default are horrible. Ubuntu should include more readable fonts out of the box.

I feel this is a very important issue and is blocking Ubuntu from being a serious option for CJK users.

Currently epiphany has a nice search-bar when you click control+f. But it really is the only search-function that is not integrated in the addres-bar.

My other epiphany suggestion wants to replace the address-bar with a crumble-bar. This suggestion is about moving all the functionality of the adres-bar into the search-bar and integrating it with the status-bar. (so it's always on screen)

I will also submit a suggestion to make the default home-page of epiphany a page containing all bookmarks, with more favorite bookmarks a larger size.

The functionality of the search bar should _change_ based on the page we are viewing..

Is it a web-page?
- search for text-within the web-page, up and down keys travel through the found items on the page.

Is it home with bookmarks?
- filter bookmarks and history and show only matching results. Up and down keys allow to select bookmark and history items on the page, including smart bookmarks. Default item is always 'google/yahoo i feel lucky' or 'open website xxx.xxx.xxx' when its a valid url.
