There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Make ubuntu more responsive
Written by marco.ferragina the 28 Feb 08 at 16:56. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've 2 distros installed on my laptop: Ubuntu Gutsy and Arch Linux! The feel with arch is that it's whippy. From the other side ubuntu is sluggish. Sure I know that my system is not so up to date (a 1.5 Ghz centrino 512 M Ram) but Arch work very well on it with the same services loaded as in ubuntu.

So I think Ubuntu can do something to improve performance.

Different wallpapers on different monitors/workspace
Written by greycode the 28 Feb 08 at 17:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
I've got two monitors, and right now if I use the wallpaper settings in gnome it stretches the wallpaper across the two monitors. It does this even for the default ubuntu wallpaper. This can look really bad depending on the image. In order to get around this I had to get two wallpaper images and join them into one large one with the GIMP and set that as my wallpaper.

There should be a way in gnome to set a different wallpaper for each monitor.

==== Merged with ideas of a similar scope: Different wallpapers on different workspace ===

Many workspaces option in Linux allows you to separate your work, why not allow users to have different wallpapers on each workspace. This allows for easier identification of which workspace you are on.
When used with compiz-fusion you can rapidly switch between your workspaces and the different wallapaper will allow you to quickly recognise what desktop you are on.

Currently this is natively available in KDE but not in Gnome. In Gnome you can't even let Compiz take over the wallpaper control because Nautilus doesn't allow for transparent backgrounds.

Other solutions like Wallpapoz are slow and when switching between desktops it takes too long to switch WP.

Eye Of Gnome
Written by Jimbo99 the 13 Mar 08 at 23:41. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Eye of gnome image viewer should permit me to grab the image using a hand tool so I can move around and view the other non-viewable parts without forcing me to use the scroll bars. This is so basic and fundamental I can't believe it was not implemented long ago.

Mounting Volumes Inconsistent
Written by Jimbo99 the 10 Mar 08 at 18:19. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
First this is a multi-issue in that mounting of volumes into the file system is very inconsistent. This includes mounting volumes in the EXT format, the NTFS format, and SMB. Primarily I'm focusing on correcting the HDD mounts so they work properly without creating any sort of work on the part of the end user.

A guy comes into my shop and wants Ubuntu. He has 3 HDDs. One is in NTFS, which holds legacy files. The other two are ready and set for EXT3. I format the two as Ext3. One holds the OS the other is just for data.

We have to edit the fstab manually, by hand, and type in a cryptic line. Then we have to manually make the folder under /media and give it the proper permissions. ALL MANUALLY. Next time it boots we have the 2nd HDD working properly. Then we have to work out the NTFS mount. So, we go in and get the NTFS-3g support and run their front end. Now we can mount all 3.

Ubuntu is new to him, so in 2 months he manages to mess up his install. He brings it back, I redo it, and when I get to the mounting of the 2nd HDD it just won't mount automatically no matter what I do. gParted works fine. It finds the device and allows me to mount it, but no editing of the fstab will resolve the issue.

On other occasions the ntfs volume won't mount. I turns out that the flag indicating proper NTFS dismount didn't occur and the driver won't let me mount the volume unless I clear this flag or I go into the fstab and force it to mount. But that requires a manual edit of a text file.

Often times I'll add a USB HDD and it just won't mount. No error messages, nothing. Just no mount. Other times it will take the wrong mount point depending on what I have currently mounted. It will display the wrong mount name on the desktop which does not correspond to the actual files on the drive.

The same goes for the EXT volumes I have mounted. Often they will show up switched around. For instance, I have 3 320 gig SATA drives. Two of drives will sometimes show up switched around. It is never the one with the file system on it that improperly mounts it is always the two data drives.

copy to / move to in nautilus
Written by derstresser the 26 Mar 08 at 22:08. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Konqueror there is the right-click option saying "Copy To" / "Move To" - would be great to have that implemented in Nautilus.

Make 'Ubuntu Code of Conduct' less tech savvy
Written by eyalev the 9 Apr 08 at 13:47. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The 'Ubuntu Code of Conduct' has too much programmers slang. It should be addressed also to 'Humans' who don't know what is 'frozen system' or 'upstream community'.

Open Office Pleadings & Envelopes
Written by Jimbo99 the 7 Mar 08 at 23:51. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
No method, absolutely none of them, is good enough to create some of the most obvious uses of a word processor in a legal firm. There are no true pleadings and importing pleadings into open office from Office leaves the numbers missing. Also, the automatic double spacing is sickeningly missing.

Envelops which should be as simple as "enter address and print" is non-existent. Imagine a website dedicated to just doing a simple envelope in Open Office.

Come on, get these done.

Include Electric Sheep
Written by Gatesgamer33 the 2 Apr 08 at 09:30. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Electric Sheep is a psychedelic, open source screen saver that updates quite frequently.

If you haven't seen it yet: http://electricsheep.org/

I'm NOT saying that it would be the default, but I feel it should be included.

Include Mp3 previewing
Written by Gatesgamer33 the 2 Apr 08 at 09:50. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is an application (mpg321) that allows a user to hover their mouse pointer over any music file to hear a preview. I use this feature all of the time. If it was placed in Ubuntu, it should also be placed in the file chooser as well
