Easy and powerfull Remote-Deskop
Written by solarstorm the 28 Feb 08 at 17:42. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
It would be great if Ubuntu (or other distributions as well) provide an easy to use remote desktop solution. While it's quite easy to connect to a remote X-Server (x over ssh or nx), it's rather hard to get also support for sound (from the remote desktop), printing (using your local printers on the remote desktop) and other things like "tray-icons" / "notification area" (have the Notification-Icons of remote applications in the local "notification area").

Update:
"x2go" looks pretty interesting: http://x2go.berlios.de/index-en.html
It uses the NX libs and they also provide a client for Windows. But I have not tested it (yet).

Developer comments
Ubuntu Desktop comes with a VNC server (vino) by default. There is also a vnc client (vinagre) which is available to connect to remote vnc servers. rdesktop is available to connect to remote windows machines via RDP.

Focus on 64-bit desktop system
Written by evil the 5 Mar 08 at 14:35. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Make installation of 64-bit on desktop easier. There are many obstructions such a Flash, Opera, Skype etc. And many MANY others...

Many users still use 32-bit Ubuntu just because they scare - complicated setup of 64-bit means less users > Less desktop users means less topics at support phorums > less help > more (unsolved) problems for new 64-bit users.

All new computers are 64-bit (Intel/AMD). Be more oriented to new "standard" desktop computers and take the advantages!

Yes, it's a 64-bit world ;-)

External monitor recognition for laptops   forum
Written by corfy the 5 Mar 08 at 04:17. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have a laptop that I have Kubuntu installed on. It works great when I'm using it as a laptop. But at the office, I have a docking station that hooks my laptop up to an external keyboard, monitor, power supply, network, speakers, and basically turns my laptop into a desktop computer. However, my external monitor is 4:3, while my laptop monitor is widescreen, so every time I plug in, I have to change my monitor settings (resolution and screen size), and then change them back when I switch back to laptop mode. It would be really nice if it could do this detection automatically, or be able to set up settings for a second monitor that I could switch back and forth.

I'm sure a similar problem occurs with projectors, but I haven't had a chance to confirm that.

Tease programming on Ubuntu
Written by Ikipou the 12 Mar 08 at 11:12. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Linux offer great tools to develop software, but there is little effort to promote them to beginners.

If you look at the competitors, they offer unified development platform and associated documentation. Have a look at XCode+developerConnection and VisualStudio+MSDN, this is ideal infrastructure to get new programmers.

It would be nice to have a dedicated website to inform people about the development on Ubuntu. The website could help people to make their first software, help them to begin with the main IDEs, and give links to get further information on the official website of the language/IDE/framework.

Such a website should be very appealing and simple to help the beginners. Help in lot of language would be a plus since lots of people don't speak English.

More developers means more people to implement the idea of Ubuntu Brainstorm :)

While I think that it is a great idea, it's not something we in Canonical should put resources to, at least not now. This is a great community task!

Bring the import of photos and videos from digital cameras to the next level
Written by david the 11 Mar 08 at 14:00. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Importing photos and videos works ok but is unintuituve and inconsistent.

Current problems :

- If you import photos with F-Spot, videos are forgotten.
- If you import photos with gThumb, the are not added to the F-Spot library.
- If you add photos to F-Spot from the hard-drive, they are copied by default instead of being referenced.

Possible solution :

gnome-volume-manager (or nautilus) could/should handle the importing task when a camera is connected by :

- Ask for some informations about the photos and videos (event, place, ...).
- Copy the photos and the videos locally in folders with a representative folder structure.
- Add the photos to the F-Spot library (by referencing them) if F-Spot is installed.
- Add the photos to the gThumb library (by referencing them) if it's installed.
- Simplify (could be remove the part that handle importing content from a digital camera) the the import dialog of f-Spot and gThumb.

Better dynamic icon placement
Written by letronje the 11 Mar 08 at 14:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes, when a USB pen drive or hard drive is plugged in, it is auto mounted, but, sometimes, the icon placed on the desktop overlaps with the existing icons on the desktop. A manual refresh is required to rearrange the icons properly. Gnome should do it automatically.

OpenOffice with (real) native GTK
Written by fragro the 11 Mar 08 at 11:07. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.

Provide a file extension database in ubuntu
Written by babis79 the 4 Mar 08 at 08:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes you have files on your system, but no clue which application to use/install to open/handle those files. It would be great if ubuntu "recognize" files (extension, magic-number, etc.) and provide an application to install which can handle the file.

Auto-Detection for GPS-Devices
Written by redd the 28 Feb 08 at 16:50. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Today the usage of a GPS-Device isn't easy in Ubuntu. There should be an auto-detection for GPS-Devices ..like Printers and Bluetooth-Devices. It would be very cool to track myself with tools from the standard-installation. Only the basic GPS-information are needed: positions, altitude, speed and tracking (positions-with-time). Thanks.

Shadow behind the desktop icons
Written by dega1999 the 11 Mar 08 at 19:41. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It should be good if it can be possible to have some shadow behind the desktop icon with a choosable color and choosable alpha channel.
The reason for this feature is to have better visibility with some wallpaper that have region that seems to hide icons.
With this feature the icons should always be in good contrast and fast reachable.

I tried to make an example but I'm not good with graphics program so if someone could make an example , it will be nice.

GUI for setting environment variables
Written by dsargeant the 1 Mar 08 at 05:10. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'd like an easy way to set environment variables (both globally and for the current user only) and have them take effect without having to log out and back in.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Provide a simple graphical interface to manage _any_ type of network connection
Ubuntu

Written by Alan Pope the 28 Feb 08 at 13:50. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At the moment it's possible to manage traditional wired and WiFi connections using Network Manager. To connect via a modem, a 3G/GPRS card, over bluetooth to a cell phone or via USB to another device requires that the user installs extra packages, and does a fair amount of configuration that isn't found in Network Manager.

A single unified tool should be provided which allows the user to connect to a network (or internet) via any supported method. It would also be useful to provide an extension to this tool to manage firewall rules and network connection sharing.

Scrollwheel on keyboards   forum
Written by benjiegillam the 2 Mar 08 at 17:02. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some multimedia keyboards (not just Microsoft ones!) have a scrollwheel (like on many mice). It would be GREAT if Ubuntu could support these keyboard scroll wheels, even if they only emulated the mouse wheel.

Keys to KILL
Written by Psycho_zs the 1 Mar 08 at 07:12. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A keyboard shortcut that kills a programm, that is currently in focus, or in fullscreen.
If it hangs and no gui way to kill it is possible (can't run system monitor, X stucks, alt+tab does not work), it is yet possible to switch to another console and type killall -KILL process, but first you need to find it's name, to enter it correctly...
So it would be nice to have a shortcut for all this, guided by focus/fullscreen

Better integration (or migration) between gnome/KDE
Written by KhaaL the 29 Feb 08 at 17:34. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some simple things such as bookmarks of my folders and mouse sensitivity settings should be recognised by the DE the user is using / migrated to. Some settings may be hard to migrate, such as keyboard shortcuts or amaroks/rythmboxs ratings , but the more simple settings shouldn't be too hard.

The free desktop enviorments shouldn't lock-in their users.

Standardize keyboard shortcuts
Written by smenjas the 29 Feb 08 at 03:40. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Windows and OS X use standard keyboard shortcuts for cut, copy, paste, etc. We should extend this idea within Ubuntu.

For example, all relevant applications should use the same keyboard shortcut to enable fullscreen mode.

Perhaps Ubuntu could spearhead an effort to develop a set of standards through freedesktop.org.

OSX like touchpad drivers
Written by krystianolech the 3 Mar 08 at 12:46. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In mac os x touchpad drivers works perfect. You can scroling in two sides, press second button with macbook touchpad witch got only one key and touchpad with any special space for scroling. I want mac os like drivers to scroling with notebook touchpad - if it is posible.
Scroling in touchpad in osx looks like that:
you put two fingers on touchpad and slide they up or down.

Apple Hardware   forum
Written by wghassan1904 the 29 Feb 08 at 06:32. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great to have Ubuntu working out of the box on Apple's current line of laptops and desktops (MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro). Currently, installing Ubuntu on a Mac is an involved process and things like the wireless networking, touchpad, cpu fans, etc. never seem to work quite right.
