Work with Google to do a joint release of Chrome
Written by RuntimeError the 2 Sep 08 at 08:49. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
Work with Google to receive an advanced Linux version of Google Chrome so you can package it and put it in the repositories at the same time of the release.

Developer comments
We've imported it into launchpad:

https://launchpad.net/googlechrome

It will be a while before it runs on Linux however, we'll keep watching upstream.

Have a usable machine with 256MB of RAM
Written by Hawke the 29 Feb 08 at 00:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
While it is common for modern machines to have at least a GiB of memory, older machines (2-3 years old) are (or IMO should be) a major target audience for Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, having 256MB of memory makes the machine almost entirely unusable for more than one task at a time.

Even the "minimalist" xubuntu is barely usable with this amount of memory.

I think Ubuntu should do some work on reducing memory usage to this level, at least for the xubuntu variant.

Shutdown after delay when power button is pressed
Written by Hawke the 29 Feb 08 at 22:09. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When the power button is pressed, it would be good if Ubuntu could first ask what to do, but then automatically power down after a delay if no response is given. The delay length could be configurable, and the automatic shutdown should probably be optional. I think a delay of 60s would be a good default delay length

This would guard against accidental (user accidentally bumped the power button) or malicious (someone walked by and pressed the power button to be mean) power button pushes by allowing the user to cancel, yet still allow the user to press the button and walk away.

OS X and Fedora both do this and it works very well.

This is based on the similar idea #1324, suggesting that Ubuntu shutdown when the power button is pressed rather than asking what to do.

more appealing startup and shutdown splashscreens
Written by maltepalte the 4 Jun 08 at 01:03. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Ubuntu startup and shutdown splashscreens with the Ubuntu logo and a progress bar underneath it really looks like something from the 90ies (Windows 95 anyone?)

I don't know if there are any hindrances to using images or animations of higher resolutions than what is currently used (for machines that supports it), but I really think Ubuntu can do better here.

This may be an unimportant improvement compared to many other ideas here, but it should be a very quick and easy fix, and it will really help when you try to convince regular folks to make the switch (a graphically stunning desktop is _so_ important when you show it to occasional users!).

enable syntax highlighting for less and nano (and vi) by default
Written by lesmana the 6 Jun 08 at 00:55. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
working on the console i use less and nano very often. i know that it is possible to enable syntax highlighting for those tools. it would be nice if syntax higlighting are enabled by default.

Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE
Written by strattonbrazil the 14 Jul 08 at 22:28. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
gnome-system-monitor provides a cleaner interface than Windows "Task Manager", and provides many useful features including list of processes running, memory and network usage, etc.

This functionality should be more accessible by key binding it by default to CTRL-ALT-DELETE as Windows does--as this is more familiar to users coming from Windows. The current key binding for CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up the shutdown/logout options, which is already accessible as a desktop button, which is redundant for a relatively less used function.

gnome-system-monitor is an idle interface for monitoring the system and killing processes without using the terminal and provides an interface for doing this that most are already familiar with. Changing it's key binding would make it's functionality much more accessible.

Brainstorm: Vote Properly
Written by acheong87 the 29 Feb 08 at 09:14. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since voting is free and unlimited, most users will naturally vote up _any_ idea that simply "sounds good". This is quite a detrimental quality of Brainstorm, because each vote does not necessarily represent the user's priorities! Suppose each user was given 3 voting points per day. Then, the user would start prioritizing what is most important to him or her. The user would vote for their top preferences, and "bookmark" other ideas for future consideration.

"But Brainstorm's not gonna change the entire system to give out voting points!"

True; this aspect of Brainstorm probably cannot be changed. So the least you can do is vote _properly_. Vote UP ideas you really need or have been waiting for. DON'T VOTE ideas that simply "sound good", if it's not as important as the ideas you've already voted for. Vote DOWN ideas that you don't agree with, or ideas that are irrelevant.

"But everyone else is voting for whatever 'sounds good'! So if I 'vote properly', then won't my votes be underrepresented?!"

At first glance, this sounds like a game-theory problem with no favorable outcome. However, I still think that voting properly _will_ make a difference, and will _not_ result in your vote being underrepresented. The more ideas you vote for, the more you decrease the gap between "important" and "not-important" items. By voting properly, you contribute to the _quality_ of each vote.

Nautilus - Use folder.jpg as folder icons   forum
Written by picpak the 29 Feb 08 at 00:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This displays album covers instead of the default folder icon in Nautilus. It also makes it easier to find your files and looks nice. Windows already does this; however, currently no Linux file manager that I know of does this by default (of course, I could be wrong).

For an example, see:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=226199

If nothing else, it saves you from tracking down and editing scripts.

The Gnome panel needs the ability to lock the entire panel like objects on the panel can be locked to the panel.
This would prevent accidentally deleting or moving the panel.

Disable Screensaver while playing movies or slideshows
Written by Wiplash4 the 27 Mar 08 at 21:55. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
It is unnerving to touch buttons when the screensaver runs while a movie is playing.

Developer comments
The default media player, Totem, already does this. If an application does not do this then please file a bug with that application in Launchpad.

Implement 'powertop' suggestions by default
Written by Hawke the 28 Apr 08 at 16:48. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At least when running on a laptop/on battery (but it would be good for a desktop on AC power too) it would be good to by default turn on all the things that powertop suggests. e.g. ALSA power save mode, increased writeback time, hald-addon-storage polling for the CD drive, USB autosuspend.

Admin rights granted in notification area
Written by biomega the 31 Aug 08 at 20:26. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm studying for the RHCE exam, so I use Red Hat besides of Ubuntu, Something that I love from Red Hat is that every time you use a Administrative tool and you get authorization to use it a icon appears in the notification area, it leaves after some time or you can just give a right click and select "forget this authorization".

It would be nice have the same in Ubuntu with gksu and that stuff

Currently, the gnome-panel uses an insane amount of RAM. Some users have reported it using up to 110mb of RAM! We cannot let something so small be such a huge memory hog!

(Note: This idea is different to #368 - excessive ram usage as this is an idea for a specific issue)

Switch my Monitor from Landscape mode to Portrait mode on the fly.   forum
Written by bruce.hobson the 29 Feb 08 at 01:33. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to switch my Monitor from Landscape mode to Portrait mode on the fly. Say by right clicking on the desktop like I do in MS Windows at this time.

In any of the Linux's, I have to edit the xorg.conf file to make this change and it's not on the fly.

Thanks

When the /home paritition is full, and we try to login, gdm just don't login and go back to the connection screen.

We have not any informations why the login fails. I know by searching into forums that it is because the partition was full and I just had to remove some files.

This kind of problems is frequent, and a newbie cannot do anything, he must search on google, but without a working session, he cannot do anything.

For me it is a blocking issue.

I propose to show a warning message which explains why we cannot login (partition full, not write access, etc), if we cannot do that at login, do it when the partition has less than 5% space available or something like that.

I created a new Guest account, then I stripped it of all user privileges.

Then I found out, that it could access all MY private data files in MY home directory.

Please fix it so that other users cannot read the home directories of other people. This is a breech of privacy.

Optimized builds of Ubuntu (-march = pentium2 maybe?)   forum
Written by squizzz the 29 Feb 08 at 17:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently Ubuntu packages seem to be compiled using very conservative compiler switches, so binaries work even on (very) old hardware.
Many other linux distributions (like ArchLinux) take advantage of enabling compile-time optimizations, that results in much better experience in terms of 'feel' (compare snappiness Arch or SuSE have compared to Ubuntu on slower machines, like 500MHz).

Since nowadays *everyone* has at least i686 and MMX (you wouldn't want to run ubuntu, if you haven't had it, anyway) these architecture-specific optimizations are not so specific anymore... Why not use it to our benefit, especially that compiler suite (GCC) improves over time, and make ubuntu snappier distro?

Gnome applet with favorite applications
Written by NeoRazorX the 29 Feb 08 at 09:04. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Instead a lot of application launchers like firefox, evolution ... we need an applet than dinamically shows our favorite applications.

By default it can shows firefox and evolution. When the user click on apllications > Internet > Pidgin (for example), this applet must show firefox, evolution and pidgin. When the user click another time on apllications > Internet > Pidgin or just the pidgin icon on this applet, it must show: pidgin, firefox and evolution.

Sorry for my bad english :P

Common Sound Driver
Written by tshrinivasan the 29 Feb 08 at 08:29. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
My skype is not working well with alsa. So I move for pulseaudio. but some other applications like flash in browser are not working. So, We need a common sound server for all applications. It may be alsa or pulse. But there are more sound servers. There should be a generic framework like X11 library, but for sound.

Add DirectX 10.1 support for Wine.

This will make Linux a more attractive platform for gamers who currently use Windows but who wish to move to Linux.
