Monitor color profiling
Written by HDave the 29 Feb 08 at 04:47. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu needs a way to ensure the colors displayed on your monitor are correct. This is important for photo editing software such as Gimp as well as video editing or painting software.

Ubuntu should provide a way to do this for ordinary users that don't have a hardware colorimeter.

For those who do have a colorimeter (such as a Spyder 2) then Ubuntu should have a program than can easily create and load on-demand monitor (ICC) profiles.

Edit: This is also known as Color Management.

Keyring should be a great password manager
Written by HDave the 29 Feb 08 at 05:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu's keyring facility is nice, but is a far cry from a real password manager. While there are several password manager's in the repository, none of them are very good and none of them are integrated into the keyring. Of the bunch, probably KeePassX is the best.

Seahorse, which is the (optionally installed) GUI to the keyring is good at storing keys, but doesn't handle web site passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

Ubuntu needs a highly secure all-in-one password/key/private note manager. Ideally it would be integrated into Firefox and Thunderbird such that those systems would work with the keyring.

Lock down "About Me"
Written by HDave the 3 Apr 08 at 22:25. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The "About Me" utility under System->Preferences is a nifty way to store information like your name, phone number, etc.

Do many people use it? I think not. Why? Because you have NO idea which applications read this information and what they do with it.

Either allow me to control which applications read this information so I can restrict access on a field level or get rid of the thing entirely. For example, I do not want Pigin/IRC channels to have access to my home phone number, etc.

As it is, it has that creepy, privacy-invading feel of Windows that made me move to Ubuntu in the first place. Time to fix it or lose it.

Brainstorm: Cascade idea status (Done, Being Worked On, etc.) to duplicate ideas
Written by HDave the 30 Jun 08 at 02:36. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently in Brainstorm if an idea is marked as "Done" or "Being Implemented" that status is not carried forth to the duplicate ideas.

This situation leaves dozens or hundreds of idea open for voting that should be closed. It's a waste of people's time and its confusing.

Add size (rows, cols) to gnome-terminal profile
Written by HDave the 1 May 08 at 05:19. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently, anyone can make/edit a profile for gnome-terminal that contains all kinds of great settings such as foreground color, background color, transparency, font, title, etc.

However you cannot set the number of rows and columns. I personally like a tall terminal with 40-50 rows and 80 columns. In order set this as the default, I need to "sudo gedit /usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm".

Doing this requires root access, and also changes the default for all users. Profile setup doesn't require root access and is used just for me.

Simple GUI to set up cellular modem (EVDO/Verizon, and others)
Written by HDave the 30 Jun 08 at 02:13. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Network Manager. New
I have an EVDO type cellular modem that I can use to get on the internet via Verizon wireless service. As it turns out, my modem is a USB serial device that requires a ppp connection to be set up in order for it to work. The good news, however, is that no proprietary driver was necessary...thus there is nothing stopping Ubuntu from immediately recognizing this device and setting it up for me.

Figuring all this out by hand, took me 3 days. My mom would have never stood a chance! While doing my research I found many other with PC card cellular modems also struggling.

With all due respect to idea #4 (easy set up of any networking connection), I believe that issue needs particular attention as these devices are particularly troublesome and with prices dropping they are becoming ubiquitous.

Ability to delete all gnome panels
Written by HDave the 29 Feb 08 at 04:50. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome will not let you delete all of its panels.

For those who wish to use a dock utility such as avant-window-navigator or kiba-dock, it should be possible to delete all the gnome panels.

Ubuntu should never require rebooting
Written by HDave the 31 Mar 08 at 21:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently if you enable, restricted video drivers, Ubuntu requires you to reboot. After my upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy, again I was required to reboot. This is inconvenient, sometime very painful (misconfigured xorg.conf, etc.) and general feels very "windows-esque."

I know it can be difficult to develop/install/run the appropriate scripts, but let it be said that "Ubuntu is the operating system that NEVER requires a reboot."

It would be good if you could either edit the title of an idea, or delete one that you created by accident -- like this one!! Particularly if there are no votes for it or if the vote count get highly negative. Sorry...

Ubuntu Streets and Trips   forum
Written by HDave the 14 Mar 08 at 21:26. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu needs a killer desktop mapping and routing program that doesn't require the user to be on-line. GPS support would be a plus, but is not required. I am thinking here of something akin to MS Streets and Trips -- which gives you a 5GB database of roads, attractions, hotels, etc.

Using GoogleEarth with a huge cache is NOT an easy or reliable way to do this.

Upgrading to new Ubuntu version should be faster
Written by HDave the 24 Apr 08 at 18:11. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The good news is that Ubuntu has apparently become hugely popular. The bad news is that I have been downloading packages for the past 6 hours and the upgrade manager reports I have another 20 hours to go.

I have a very fast internet connection -- I was able to download the Hardy Alternate CD via bittorrent in a little under 45 minutes while I have been waiting. Unfortunately for me, the CD comes with only 250 of the 1400 packages I need upgraded. So here I wait.

I know its the big release day for Hardy, I know there are millions of people downloading it right now, I know we should feel lucky their servers aren't crashing.

Sorry, but I don't care about these excuses. I wanted to spend the day working on Hardy, not waiting for an upgrade to take place. As a consumer, I don't not accept excuses for this from eBay, Google, Bank of America, MSN, Amazon, NewEgg, etc.

Wake up Ubuntu! You're getting to be mainstream...time to invest in a world-class infrastructure.
