Make it possible to rotate images in OO.o
Written by cumulus007 the 26 Aug 08 at 14:56. Category: Office. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
It's impossible to rotate images directly in Writer. I have to open them in Draw first and export the Draw image into Writer. That just sucks. I want to import a picture and rotate it instantly. Please add this function to OO.o!

use Evolution without email account
Written by Lex the 12 Aug 08 at 15:52. Category: Office. Related to: Evolution Mail and Calendar. New
There is wizard on Evolution's first start, that forces users to enter all email details. There should be option to create basic account without email, because some people want to use just calendar and contact functionality.

When downloading and "open with", the "Other" option should list programs
Written by kramer65 the 6 Aug 08 at 09:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Firefox. New
I set the standard program to open .doc's with OpenOffice. However, when I download a .doc file and I want to open it immediately from the download option in firefox, it gives MS Office through wine as the default.
If I then select the "Other" option it just gives me a menu in which I can select folders and files. I guess I'm supposed to find OpenOffice by hand or something..?

What it should do is give me a list of programs which I can choose from with the most appropriate ones on top. After that you might give the option to select manually, but I think this is for more experienced users.

(Thanks to Ubunteando below for the idea of the auto detecting of most appropriate programs)

Push Dell to use coreboot instead of proprietary BIOS
Written by Laconic the 11 Aug 08 at 23:14. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Dell seems to be ignoring this in Ideastorm.
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62549/coreboot_formerly_LinuxBIOS_instead _of_proprietary_BIOS

Maybe Canonical could bring it up at their next meeting or something.

Benefits:
# 100% Free Software (GPL), no royalties, no license fees!
# Fast boot times (3 seconds from power-on to Linux console)
# Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start

Mount/unmount network shares automatically   forum
Written by Paqman the 14 Aug 08 at 17:50. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Network shares are becoming increasingly common for home users, and many laptop users routinely connect and disconnect to networks with shares.

Ubuntu should have an option to automatically mount designated shares when they are detected, and unmount them when they disappear. At present the system requires a sudo mount -a to go and check the /etc/fstab and mount any strays.

Users have already posted a script that does this in the forums.

Add "Purchase pre-installed" to Get Ubuntu page

The "Get Ubuntu" page should have a link to purchase Ubuntu pre-installed on machines. It should list System76 and Dell as international providers, and then provide a localized list below that. This will encourage computer buyers to purchase computers with Ubuntu pre-installed and help those already looking for this.

At least link to the wiki page:

Push for Dell-Ubuntu Laptops Cheaper than Dell-M$
Written by carickw the 15 Aug 08 at 14:00. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I just looked online to see how much a Dell with Ubuntu preloaded was and then looked at the same laptop with windows. To my amazement, the Ubuntu laptop was not even the same price as the Windows one, it was MORE!!!

The laptop I looked at was the XPS M1330 and the Windows version was $999 - $100 savings = 899, while the Ubuntu version was still at $999. Even though the smart ones (us) know about the benefits of using ubuntu, whats the incentive to buy the open source Ubuntu over the well-known Windows platform.

Right now, Vista Home Premium is about a $100, so the fact that ubuntu is free, the same computer with Ubuntu should be ~$100 less than the Windows computer with home premium.

If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!
Written by DPic the 4 Aug 08 at 01:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.

How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability

I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light

I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs

Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!

P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Understandable partition tool for installation
Written by bert.ubuntu the 28 Apr 08 at 09:57. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many people have trouble installing Ubuntu alone. I will list here some common problems people find and in the end I will propose some solutions.

Attitudes like: "If the user doesn't know how to partition he/she should ask for help from someone else more experienced" are not really the solution to attract new users (mainly people having their first Linux experience or without internet access).

Some problems:
1. One of the first things the partitioner does is to ask what kind of partition should be created. Well, more than 50% of the users would say: What is a partition ? (before even have to ask themselves "Why should I do it?").

2. People don't know they should create a "/" partition (does it sounds any intuitive at first glance ?)

3. People don't know why do they have to do it because "in te system X I don't need to do it ! Everything simply works out of the box". We should not think it as any natural concept.

Off course it has many more problems. Let us stop here and show some possibilities:

- An introductory screen with short and acurate information. One suggestion is:

First screen:
"Now you may choose to have your disk partitioned. This process can make your system more secure, responsive and easy to manage. "

Second Screen:
"Some advantages of partioning:
-Frequently people have their personal data (internet content, projects, documents under construction), system data (installed programs, configuration files, etc.) and some shared data (like music, video, documents, etc.). If you have more than one system you should use partitions to organize it. If you have only one system you may use partitions to separate the contents from each other. This technique permits, for example, one to erase the whole system data preserving your personal and shared data and allowing you to install a new system with your old content.

Install with existing /home does not recreate old accounts...   forum
Written by Rinzwind the 20 Apr 08 at 16:52. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I almost always reinstall my system while keeping my current /home. When you have multiple accounts only the new account gets recreated and all the other accounts keep their /home/user name/'s but are not created.

This creates a problem: try to recreate this user in '/system/administration/users and groups' and you get an
error stating the /home/user name/ already exists.

(I did a move of /home/user name/ and recreated the account and then move the files back again.)

Idea: why not ask during install whether user names inside /home should be recreated with their current home. Maybe with a option to delete some of the accounts.

Alternativly (or in combination with this) when 'using /system/administration/users and groups' and the user is not inside /etc/passwd/ (seems the most obvious one to check) it should accept the current home for this user and just show a notice (and keep going) that it's allready an existing directory.

It would make for an easier re-install!

keyboard arrows should work on logout screen
Written by underdog512 the 1 Aug 08 at 04:25. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Gnome. New
In the Gnome environment, when loging out it seems like you have to use the mouse to select one of the log out options ie. log out, shut down, and suspend.

Users should be able to use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate to the desired option and press enter to select the option.

This would give it a more professional feel and may be quicker and more preferable to some users.

Prompt to add user to vboxusers
Written by Thelasko the 1 Aug 08 at 19:36. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. Not an idea
When a user installs virtualbox he/she needs to add users to the group vboxusers to give them access to the kernel driver. The user should be provided a prompt, either on install, or on first run, that allows them to add users to the vboxusers group.

Nautilus : Drag&Drop of files on an archive should add them to it
Written by cudjoe the 1 Aug 08 at 12:24. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In Nautilus file browser pane, I wish I could drag and drop files to archives **without** having to open file-roller.

(other ideas in brainstorm only mention D'n'D between a file-roller window and nautilus)

Don't you hate when you by mistake press crtl + alt + backspace at the same time? And everything you are working on just disappear you don't even have to save.

Now why don't do like fedora, make taping crtl + alt + backspace once make a sound so you know that you have pressed it and if you press crtl + alt + backspace twice you restart X11.

WORKING video editor desperately needed
Written by jonsayer the 17 Jul 08 at 00:53. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Kino. New
I just want to say that I stopped using Ubuntu because I couldn't find a decent video editor that met my needs.

As was put in this post about a multimedia suite: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3162

"Is there a really solid OSS video editor for the home video enthusiast? This is what I see with many OSS video editors: Cinelerra is overkill and it lacks the ability to capture DV video. Kino and Diva are just to basic. Pitivi just combines clips, Kdenlive is still very buggy (in beta) also, getting firewire to work is also a real pain for video editing applications too. "

I do video as a part of my job and am (or at least was) very passionate about open source. I tried every open source editor out there. I searched for months. None fit the bill. I found all of the above problems to be absolutely true (especially for Kdenlive. It crashed every thirty seconds).

I think video editors are one place where the standard open source philosophy of having one program do only one thing doesn't work. A video editor needs to to tons of things to work well.

If there were a video editor for Linux that was to Final Cut and Premiere what GIMP is to Photoshop and Open Office is to MS Office, I would probably return to Linux.

Easily Mount/Unmount disk images from Nautilus
No information about this blueprint
Information is updated every 5 minutes.
Please wait till the next update.
spec
Written by jhfry the 18 Jul 08 at 13:50. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Gnome. New
As HDD sizes and bandwidth increase, it is becomming more and more common for users to keep disk images on their machines/networks for easy access rather than maintaining large inventories of CD/DVD media. Unfortunately, mounting these images is still a commandline function requiring SU rights unless the administrator manually configures Fuse.

I have seen many tools and scripts for mounting disk images from within Gnome, however I feel that my solution is the most transparent to the user. It functions very similar to the way OSX works, and is very intuitive.

A while back, I wrote the instructions at the bottom of the page here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ManageDiscImages

These instructions would be fairly easily incorporated into a package (I can only guess as I'm not a developer) that could be made part of the Ubunutu default install.

This would allow any Ubuntu user, reguardless of skill level, perform what up till now required at least minimal experience with the commandline.

Please vote this up!

Have a panel background by default
Written by sparky11 the 23 Jul 08 at 20:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
The current default install has just plain white panels. These panels are no match for what other modern operating have as their background. It is very easy to implement, and would make a much better impression on many potential users.

I understand this is similar to:
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10935/

but that proposes more radical and harder to implement ideas. I think that idea 10935 should be a longterm goal, but for the short term (8.10), ubuntu should just get a nice panel background, such as:
