For the new theme: Ignore the impossible mockup, use the Dust theme
Written by belovedmonster the 23 Aug 08 at 18:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Everyone by now has seen the world famous mockups of what Ubuntu apparently should look like. The problem is that what is shown in those mockups is not yet possible with the current way gnome works.

I worry with everyone clambering for this mythical theme and with time running out before 8.10 ships, what will end up happening is Ubuntu will ship with the same old problematic brown and orange theme that is so hated by a lot of people.

There is a solution though...

The Dust theme
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/DustTheme

The Dust theme has gotten a lot of praises on Digg and is easily as sexy as anything I've personally seen for Linux (and I'm not usually a fan of dark themes), bust most promising of all... is actually possible with the current technology we have at our disposal.

It's time to be bold! Stop defaulting to the same brown and orange and make a big bold change. Embrace Dust.

Yes you will get a few idiots who will say it's too like Vista just because it's black, but ignore them people. The wider tech community will praise Ubuntu for finally ditching its dorky themes and becoming sophisticated and sexy. New users will be eager to try out this Ubuntu thing they have heard so much about.

Download packages and dependencies without Internet access
Written by Demiurgo the 10 Aug 08 at 13:26. Category: Installation. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Hello. I am newbie on linux world and i find it is very difficult to manage the software if you don't have Internet access, which is my case. I would like to know if it could be possible to download the packages with all the dependencies needed at once.

I'm sure i'm not the first one who ask about this but i would like to know if it would be feasible to do something like:

1º User does "dpkg -l > list.txt" and take that file to the computer with Internet (for example: at work place)

2º Then uses a browser at the package website to upload the file with the list of packages installed in its computer.

3º It selects the software which want to download

4º The site checks the dependencies needed with the packages list (list.txt) and download everything necessary.
It could also create a script to install all the downloaded packages in the user's computer.

Thank you and sorry if i'm repeatting something which someboby already talked about

PD. Sorry also about my english.

Make visual-effects alt-tab display 5 thumbnails instead of 3.
Written by tchalvakspam the 12 Jul 08 at 14:18. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Compiz. New
Ironically, moving to "normal" and "extra" visual effects makes alt-tab display thumbnails of your window choices (good) but cuts the display down to three cycling choices at a time (bad).

When no visual effects are on, it displays all of my so that I can easily tab to the exact one that I already know I'm looking for.

I, for example, have 13 different windows open, so alt-tab makes me see less than a quarter of 'em, which makes it harder to tab the exact number of times to get to the exact right one.

If I install Windows after Ubuntu, it's impossible to boot Ubuntu until I install again GRUB following several instructions.
My idea is adding the option "Restore bootloader" in the list which appears when Ubuntu installation CD start. The aim is to offer a simple way to restore GRUB without loading a live distribution, opening a terminal and following a long series of instructions

[Edit 06/03/2008]
In my opinion, the user SHOULDN'T boot the Ubuntu Live Distro. It would be an unuseful waste of time.
Instead, it should be possible to select a new option among those ones of the startup menu of the CD.

Add 'remove item'-option to Applications menu items
Written by loldrup the 15 May 08 at 07:48. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For example, I don't have a Palm PDA, so I would like to be able to easily remove the item "PalmOS Devices" from the System-menu.

I guess theres some more obscure way to do it, but why not offer the easy one?

Collaboration between distros
Written by Redrazor39 the 10 May 08 at 16:40. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Why can't all Linux distributions work together and add the features and good parts of one another so they are all awesome? Why can't they share code, exchange it, improve it, pass it on, and continue?

I've heard OpenSUSE has a good installer, Linux Mint has nailed the "polish" factor of the theme, Fedora has this or that, DSL is light as a feather, etc.

Why can't all the code be shared among distributions? I know there are different window managers and different languages, but for distributions that share the same language in an aspect, why can't the two be combined into something awesome and implemented in both? Even if a different language or system is used, why can't certain features be implemented in the distro's own way?

The advancement of Linux would reach a speed untouchable by proprietary software if this happened; it's already faster but why can't we make all of this as good and fast as possible?

I know different distributions have different goals and philosophies and all, so I'm not saying copy everyone by everyone else. I'm saying if a feature or system would fit in well with another distribution than the original, then why is it not implemented immediately and re-fitted to work perfectly with the original distro?

I know I'm being very general but plenty of people have talked about distro A having this while distro B should share it- it would work well, etc.

Mozilla-firefox-adblock should be replaced by Adblock Plus in Ubuntu's repos.

Mozilla-firefox-adblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/1865) should be replaced by Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)in Ubuntu's repositories because the Adblock isn't developed anymore (since 2004).

Brainstorm - Require people to read comments before voting
Written by peterjs the 3 Mar 08 at 00:30. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Clearly people aren't reading the comments on ideas before voting on them. For example on this idea:

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2612/

The second and third comment clearly show that the idea has already been implemented Yet people keep voting it up. The idea was 4 up votes as of the third comment, and 7 as of posting this idea.

People should be required to read the comments on ideas before voting on them so that dissenting opinions can be considered and already implemented ideas can get the down votes they deserve.

Obviously you can't force people to read and think, but you can move the voting option to below the comments section so that people at least have to look at the comments.

Make the list of file formats smaller in GIMP
Written by tioum the 6 Mar 08 at 17:52. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you try to save an image with the gimp it looks like to propose all the file formats of the universe and I have to scroll down for JPEG. This is quite obscure and unnecessary.

I think most user need only the basic formats and the rest should be an option or a separate package.

Since Brasero is being installed by default, and in order to keep consistency through the system, the "places → CD creator" menu item should launch it instead of Nautilus CD burner.

In order to avoid duplication, too, NCB should be removed altogether.

Hight speed battery charge option
Written by atlas95 the 6 Mar 08 at 15:09. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Is it possible to increase the charge speed of the battery?
With kernel option or something else and add a right clic option on the gnome-power-manager applet.

For example I have running all pm my laptop on battery and I have only 40min for re-charge it ... but gnome-power-manager say me I must have 3h for fully charge it !

Brainstorm : allowing submiters to edit their post
Written by Marchombre the 6 Mar 08 at 15:40. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As we always do typing error, or remember too late something very important to add, why not allowing us to edit our own ideas, or comments ?
I don't think that it would make too much abuse... as every forum (at least good forums) allow it.

[EDIT] Sry useless, it's already possible...

Check forced at shutdown, not startup
Written by Matt Arnold the 29 Feb 08 at 00:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On startup Ubuntu will sometimes say the disk "has been mounted x times without being checked, check forced". Then it will make me wait to use the computer. Why not do this at shutdown instead of startup? When the user starts up the computer, they're sending a message to Ubuntu saying "I want to use my computer now." Not later. When they shut down, they're telling Ubuntu "I don't want to use my computer now." Do it then.

While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

Mount removable storage synchronously
Written by jez9999 the 28 Feb 08 at 23:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you plug in something like a USB dongle, it should be mounted synchronously (-o sync) instead of in buffered mode.

For me, this is far preferable to the minute performance gain gotten by mounting the device in buffered mode. You're very unlikely to be using such devices for anything except data storage/retreival, in which case mounting synchronously is a major benefit. Expecting new users (or those used to Windows XP's behaviour) to know you have to right-click, 'unmount', before removing the drive is not a good idea, as well as just being unnecessary if the device is mounted synchronously. It's also irritating for people like me who know you need to do it, but either occasionally forget or don't want to bother.

Mount the thing synchronously by default. This is what Windows XP does, and it allows you to just remove the drive after any file transfers have finished. Yes, problems will occur if you remove it durung a file transfer, but that's gonna happen in ANY mount mode. It's far more obvious to the user that this will cause a problem than removal of the drive before unmounting. Also stop displaying that 'unsafe device removal' message for devices mounted synchronously.

GUI for ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall)
Written by gabim the 28 Feb 08 at 14:43. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
It would be useful to create a graphical user interface for the new ufw (Uncomplicated Firewall) in Ubuntu. Would be useful to make every new release with an enabled firewall by default and with this graphical firewall utility also.

Developer comments
Someone is working on it but that softwares hasn't reached the archive yet. http://gufw.tuxfamily.org/

Include Compiz Fusion Manager by default

Developer comments
Sorry, but no. The stack has to mature. DRI2, drivers and default settings of compiz are the things that need attention. Adding and enabling "power-user"-features by default, which are only used by a fraction of the whole user-base, is an unnecessary introduction of UI-clutter we try to avoid.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.
