If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!
Written by DPic the 4 Aug 08 at 01:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.

How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability

I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light

I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs

Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!

P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Hand Drawn pointer (mouse) selection
Written by aloctavodia the 23 Jul 08 at 04:17. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
clicking left mouse`s button and dragging allow to make rectangular selections.

It`s would be interesting to implement a hand drawn selection on nautilus (just as the hand draw selection tool on The Gimp).

this feature should be activated in a simple way for example Ctrl + right button or Supr + left button

allowing two types of selections with the mouse give much more versatility, and is also fun and looks cool (an not yet implemented in any other OS, as far as I know)

ctrl+alt+del + enter = lock the screen; super key = start deskbar applet
Written by krychek the 6 Mar 08 at 11:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If you work at a company where have windows and you must lock your screen each time you leave your computer you just press ctrl+alt+del then enter. And the screen is locked. Ctrl+alt+del is almost the same in Ubuntu but nothing happens when you press enter. It could lock the screen just like in windows. :)

My other idea is that since the super key has no function in Ubuntu maybe it would be nice if it could launch the deskbar applet. For example if you wanted to start skype you could do this: press super, type in skype, press enter. Quick and easy.

Download packages and dependencies without Internet access
Written by Demiurgo the 10 Aug 08 at 13:26. Category: Installation. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Hello. I am newbie on linux world and i find it is very difficult to manage the software if you don't have Internet access, which is my case. I would like to know if it could be possible to download the packages with all the dependencies needed at once.

I'm sure i'm not the first one who ask about this but i would like to know if it would be feasible to do something like:

1º User does "dpkg -l > list.txt" and take that file to the computer with Internet (for example: at work place)

2º Then uses a browser at the package website to upload the file with the list of packages installed in its computer.

3º It selects the software which want to download

4º The site checks the dependencies needed with the packages list (list.txt) and download everything necessary.
It could also create a script to install all the downloaded packages in the user's computer.

Thank you and sorry if i'm repeatting something which someboby already talked about

PD. Sorry also about my english.

Opera 'All languages' in the repos
Written by Fjatle the 22 Jul 08 at 15:33. Category: Others. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
When you install Opera from the repos, you only get the english version. Though there is a version at opera.com where you get many more languages.
Put THAT one in the repos

The cover art plugin is great, but sometimes I have it download wrong cover arts.

There should be a way to remove the wrong cover art- possible an "X" button that shows up when the mouse is over the cover art image.
