LESS IS MORE: gray-ish & thick borders away from Gnome
Written by mikasjoman the 10 Mar 08 at 19:52. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am so tired of having gray menus, gray background, gray buttons etc in the Human theme. Let´s use bright white against black/darkgray text, that makes good contrast and makes the experience bright for all new people coming into Ubuntu.
And a great idea would be, at the same time, to take away the borders of windows since they just take up space for no good reson, cluttering up the desktop experience. Less is more.

Dont limit the themes to all dark themes. I like bright themes. The human themes were fine for me.Dark themes are hard to see an read.

One app, one icon
Written by xlasttrainhomex the 1 Mar 08 at 16:43. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Create an application folder and install apps dragging their icon into that application folder. It's easier than package installing and more intuitive for new users. Also resolve dependencies in background.

[Software] Inkscape Vector Drawing by default
Written by flomar the 1 Mar 08 at 15:17. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi,

'Inkscape' (http://www.inkscape.org/) is an opensource vector drawing application.
While there is 'Gimp' for Image Manipulation, there is 'OpenOffice Draw' for the vector part (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_graphics).

I personally consider 'Inkscape' to be the more professional software and would appreciate to be installed by default in addition or as alternative to 'OpenOffice Draw'.

Thanks,
Flo

Push for Yahoo to update their linux client
Written by Kreuger the 1 Mar 08 at 15:20. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For years now, I've been trying to find the best client for using yahoo messenger on linux and none of them really cut it. Most of them are lacking features, others are specific to a certain desktop. I use Fluxbox and dont want to run Kopete or anything under it. We need to push Yahoo to update their client much like Mac users have to push Microsoft to update their msn. The client as it sits right now looks like it was made in the 1950s or something.

Facebook photo uploader
Written by Auslegung the 1 Mar 08 at 16:29. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The default applet to upload photos to Facebook does not seem to work for anyone in Gutsy, and that includes using ies4linux, which makes me think it may be an OS problem. If it is, please fix, if not, tell me I'm wrong and maybe suggest a solution.

Mark Ideas as "read" like on google reader
Written by wladston the 1 Mar 08 at 02:58. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As you go reading the ideas on the Brainstorm website, go marking then as "read", so you don't have to read then again.

They do it very nicely on: reader.google.com

OpenOffice automatic upgrade (like the Mozilla Firefox automatic upgrade)
Written by felixcorrales the 1 Mar 08 at 03:58. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
OpenOffice

Please include an OpenOffice automatic upgrade (like the Mozilla Firefox automatic upgrade). The final user should be able to upgrade to the latest OpenOffice version.

I use ubuntu 7.04, and the OpenOffice version it isn't the new one, I don't want to change my Ubuntu version yet, I just want to upgrade the OpenOffice.

Include Compiz-Fusion Tray-Icon
Written by dei the 29 Feb 08 at 09:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As Gutsy already has compiz-fusion as standard Window-Manager it is frequently troublesome to disable it (when starting a game, a Java-App or saving battery-life). Including the compiz-fusion-tray-icon would provide a simple ui to allow the user to disable it temporarily and additionally a quick way to change settings.

Improve the "Save as..." and "Open file" Nautilus mini-browser
Written by fde the 29 Feb 08 at 09:54. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you want to open a file, or save a file from an application, you have to use this mini file browser. It is tiny, not easily usable, and particularly frustrating when searching for an image, since you can't have a thumbnail of them.

It should be bigger by default, and it should be possible to choose the view of the file (list, details or thumbnails).

Show who votes for or against an idea

It would be nice to see who is voting for or against an idea here, so that we can ask why.

brainstorm: Hating other users
Written by yman the 29 Feb 08 at 07:57. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Give users the ability "hate" other users. When you "hate" another user, you automatically vote against anything posted by that user.

I think that allowing users to "love" other users would mean encouraging the creation of fictitious accounts that automatically support each other, so I am not suggesting it.

Developer comments
Let's not do this. Instead we'll add a 'report spam' button and repeat offenders posting spam or abuse will be visible there and can be banned by admins.

Written by average-joe the 29 Feb 08 at 07:58. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
average person needs wizards across the board...

get rid of this package manager crap and make it easy with a installer wizard.
i had a look at a few pages and didnt see this on the list and its so important to linux being successfull.... why is it so hard to make linux user friendly?

help wizards for all is my call...

if it was easier to use more people would use it...its improved but not enough...

Vote only when you comment.
Written by hellmet the 29 Feb 08 at 08:16. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The voting feature is being abused at the moment, as its a feature that everyone sees the first thing, and are click-happy. It would be better if we were allowed to vote only when we also comment.

Brainstorm stats
Written by flooted the 29 Feb 08 at 08:30. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be good to have user and idea statistics here like:

-user with most ideas, votes, comments
-ideas with most points, comments
-total number of ideas, comments, users

any others..?

Ubuntu System Rescue CD
Written by jfdm the 29 Feb 08 at 09:13. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Inspired by other system rescue cds such as http://www.sysresccd.org/ and the Apple Mac os X "install/rescue cd"

Why not make an Ubuntu based Rescue CD/USB that can be used by System Admins to resolve system issues and aid in data recovery.

This version doesn't require a full blown desktop environment such as GNOME or KDE, but could be a stripped down version, with the core functionality and the bare minimum of need applications from the desktop environments, this would help when saving older machines.

It would also need to be loaded with relevant system tools.
