Add CPU frequency scaling option to power managment
Written by Girindor the 22 Apr 08 at 08:38. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
When I first got Ubuntu my laptop was constantly overheating. I almost gave up on linux, but in the last minute found out to do "echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor"
...in order to select the "powersave" governor. For a while I had to go through the hassle of doing this *every time* I booted Ubuntu, until I found the "Ubuntu Tweak" application, which enables you to add an option to the Preferences/Power management dialog to select a CPU governor (powersave/conservative/ondemand/etc.)

Could this option not be included by default?! It would also give people another easy option to make their batteries last when they need to!

Busy cursor as ubuntu animated logo
Written by sealview the 21 Apr 08 at 15:15. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Even though, I like the current busy cursor, I thought that would be much original if, instead of the MAC_Loading Animation to busy cursor, would be the ubuntu logo rotating around its origin.
Also this might be done for Kubuntu and Xubuntu, too, with their own logos.

Please excuse my English!

A .deb should be able to add itself a repository to add auto update function
Written by samovian the 19 Apr 08 at 08:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Installing a software by double clicking on a .deb is now really simple thanks to gdebi. But a a software installed by this method will not be able to auto update. So I propose that a .deb will be able to propose to the user to add a repository in order to stay up to date.

Better Firewire soundcard support
Written by X-dark the 3 Mar 08 at 17:37. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Using an external sound card plugged via firewire is really painfull today.
Some people give up Ubuntu for this only reason.
A better out of the box support would be great.

Sound effects in mixer - normalizer
Written by Jeisson the 9 Mar 08 at 18:03. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be useful and fantastic to apply effects to the sound for whole the system. So the Volume Control application would have a tab with a pool of effects (echo, chorus...), in the similar way the Sound Blaster Audigy's mixer has. I don't know if this feature is hardware dependant or it could be emulated by software.

I am really interested in a special effect: Volume Normalizer. So if one is working with headphones, one can trust no application will sound to much harder suddenly.

AC97 half-hardware equalizer support
Written by AzazelMazikin the 1 Mar 08 at 14:17. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It should be done. In Windows after installing Sound Manager I got systray icon that configures AC97. There is equalizer too. I dont know is it hardware or just some FFT in driver, but it works purely like hardware one, in all applications, on all devices including CD and MIDI and does not consume processor at all

volume control
Written by jsakltk the 29 Feb 08 at 04:13. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
- merge the headphone and speaker volume control into a single unit, or at least create an option that locks the two together.

- when users are adjusting the volume, they generally do it with respect to what they are currently listenning. however, in the next 20-30 seconds, when they start listenning something else or just that whatever they are listenning has changed its characteristics, the output volume suddenly can really go up. So maybe an option could be to adjust the volume such that the current volume output level is going to be the max. (with some noise allowed) volume output regardless of whatever is played.

Better support for multimedia programs
Written by DeepBlue the 29 Feb 08 at 16:27. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Wine is a fine way to have a decent use of some multimedia programs, but professionals have higher standards and demand better workflow. Programs like Photoshop, Coreldraw, Lightroom and others schould have their Linux version sometime in the future..

Microphone and Skype
Written by jlfortier the 29 Feb 08 at 16:49. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Change sound software to allow the microphone to work with skype and the sound recorder. This has been a persistent problem with both my Intel and Amd architecture.

bug
Written by pornographer the 29 Feb 08 at 17:56. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
After 2 years of waiting, Creative eventually released a 64 bit version that required a compile hell, and crashed ubuntu on startup. There is no 32 bit support.

This soundcard is present in many high-end Dell workstations, and as such the Ubuntu/Dell partnership should be able to provide leverage to speed this situation up.

totem movie player should keep aspect ratio
Written by _sebastian_ the 29 Mar 08 at 11:52. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
it would be good to have a option to keep the aspect ratio of the playing movie when changing the size of the window.

by now (feisty for me) there is the option to resize to 1:2 1:1 2:1 and to set the aspect ratio but none which says "keep aspect ratio".
This should work for any aspect ratio the movie file comes with, just keep it.

Rhyhmbox needs better radio support
Written by homerhomer the 16 Mar 08 at 18:16. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Rhythmbox needs better radio support that can automatically update the radio stations.

A good examples of this is with streamtuner
http://www.nongnu.org/streamtuner/

And I think that it would be a good Idea putting a couple of pro Linux podcasts on the default install too.

Thanks

Use a mobile phone as a webcam + microphone
Written by cosmotroll the 2 Mar 08 at 13:57. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Use the video capabilities of mobile phones for video conversation with "VOIP" or IM clients (kopete, amsn, openwengo, ekiga, skype, ...).

You would then have a mobile webcam if you use the bluetooth channel :)

It's related to a broader issue: enhance the interoperability between mobile devices and linux.

integrate lightscribe cd/dvd feature
Written by happy_tux the 21 Mar 08 at 03:10. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
cd/dvd roms come with a technology called "lightSCribe"... I would love to see this integrated into the operating system somehow.
There is a .deb file for it on the main lightscribe.com site but its for i386 not 64-bit...
There is a sdk available on their site so integrating this may be even easier..
Would be really nice to actually use this feature..

Thanks

Install a better scanning program by default
Written by picpak the 29 Feb 08 at 00:24. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Seriously, xsane terrifies me. I'm completely lost each time I use it. It reeks of that poorly designed early-90's hacker-app feel. There's Scanner Utility in Add/Remove, but it doesn't let me scan all of my scanner. Can we please have something similar to the scanning programs of Windows?

Volume/mute available during screensaver lock-out   forum
Written by Cybercod the 8 Mar 08 at 13:11. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice if the volume and mute buttons on our multimedia keyboard would work even when the screensaver is locked. Or at least make an option for this.

When listening to music around the house, usually the screensaver comes on within a few minutes. Its password protected because we have a five-year-old. If we get a phone call and its up too loud that means we have to input a password just to turn down the volume so we can hear the phonecall.

This would also probably be a good idea for an office environment if someone leaves their desk unattended and their colleagues need to turn their system volume down for some reason.

Sound to have VU meter or visual indication to show mic in is working.
Written by captainpugwash the 28 Mar 08 at 16:02. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It drives me insane trying to diagnose if my sound card Microphone input is working correctly.

it would be great if I could have some kind of visual feed back like the old "VU" meters we used to have on old fashioned tape decks.

Getting skype to work or dealing with any "sound in" / "mic in" issues on Ubuntu has been a nightmare to trouble shoot. this would make it a bit easier.
