I believe it would be a good idea to redesign the file system hierarchy in Ubuntu in a way similar to GoboLinux . Especially as a newbie migrating from Windows or Mac OS X is used to "/Applications" or "C:\Program Files" respectively, not to things like "/usr/bin" and "/usr/share". See the GoboLinux website for more reasons for this idea.

Easy way to turn on/off bluetooth
Written by Aldo Nogueira the 11 Jun 08 at 13:21. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the suggestions powertop (a tool that helps to save battery power) told me is to turn off my notebook's bluetooth when it is not being used.
"Disable the unused bluetooth interface with the following command:
hciconfig hci0 down; rmmod hci_usb"

I think it would be nice to have a way to turn off/on bluetooth graphically using bluetooth applet.

Always give reason for need to reboot
Written by jhoger the 19 Jun 08 at 01:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Often after doing an update the double arrow icon will appear indicating a need to reboot. But if you click it, no reason is given as to why reboot is needed.

My idea is that clicking on the icon (or a "Why?" link for more information) should indicate why the OS thinks a reboot is needed so I can make a decision about whether to do it now or later.

During copy, Nautilus should check files name before complaining about space

I've got a 1 Gb USB storage with an 800 Mb file on it.

When I want to copy an updated version of this file (same name), Nautilus warn me that the operation can't be done cause there is not enought space on the disk.

So I have to manualy erase the old file, empty the trashcan, and finaly copy the new file.

Therefore I suggest that Nautilus check files name when coping or moving operations BEFORE complaining about having not enought space left. (and then simply ask if we want to replace/rename/cancel)

Improve Search Button in Nautilus

I don't think the search button in Nautilus works as good as it is supposed to do. A great search would be nice!

Wiki/database for ISP configuration in every isp worldwide
Written by Auzy the 3 Mar 08 at 08:27. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu should start a wiki for connection instructions for every ISP worldwideThis way if a user is having difficulty at home, he can jump on, and get updated information on how to do it.

It will also help highlight issues with some isps, and make it easier for HSDPA users for instance to connect without having to screw around in forums.

By highlighting issues in various internet connection methods, maybe we can learn from it, and improve compatibility with dodgy isps in the future

Disable Voting for ideas marked as Work in progress or done
Written by Auzy the 3 Mar 08 at 08:47. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
Ideas which are done (or work in progress) should have the voting arrows removed or replaced with a tick for done(or working symbol).

That makes it immediately obvious to people the idea is being actively worked on, or is going to be, at which point, voting no longer has any influence on the idea anymore anyway.

The status of projects isn't obvious enough, so doing this will make it more obvious, and make more sense overall.

OSX like touchpad drivers
Written by krystianolech the 3 Mar 08 at 12:46. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In mac os x touchpad drivers works perfect. You can scroling in two sides, press second button with macbook touchpad witch got only one key and touchpad with any special space for scroling. I want mac os like drivers to scroling with notebook touchpad - if it is posible.
Scroling in touchpad in osx looks like that:
you put two fingers on touchpad and slide they up or down.

Better handling of multiple virtual terminal logins
Written by wombatworld the 3 Mar 08 at 13:04. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The gnome fast user switcher applet works very well. However there are several problems with the simple idea of switching virtual terminals to switch users. For example, when a DVD is inserted in the DVD drive, a DVD player program (eg, totem) will start up simultaneously for each logged-in user, causing the audio to play several times at once offset by a fraction of a second, giving an annoying echo effect. Plugging in a USB flash drive will pop up a nautilus window on each logged-in user's screen. If user A leaves a music player running when switching to user B, user B has no way to stop user A's player. These and similar flaws make fast user switching much less useful. The logged-in user should have full and exclusive control (modulo permission issues) of the machine's sound and peripherals, just as they exclusively control its display, keyboard, and mouse. Of course, printers and hard disks are shared by all users, so this doesn't apply to them.

Firefox irritation at system shutdown
Written by drsandone the 3 Mar 08 at 13:16. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
The Firefox application refuses to close automatically on system shutdown. It prompts for a close button.

All open applications restore to their respective positions on the respective desktops except Firefox which has to be started manually every time the system is switched on.

Can this be set right?

OOo should have several GUI corresponding to different levels of difficulty
Written by antistress the 3 Mar 08 at 13:40. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you play a video game, you have the choice before starting :

- beginner
- confirmed
- expert

Some softs have a lot of functionnalities : all are not useful to everyone.
I think they should propose several GUI corresponding to different levels of difficulty.

For instance OOo should have a basic GUI for beginners that could look like Abiword or Google Docs.

We could imagine that at firt start, OOo asks if the user consider himself like a beginner or if he has some experience with that kind of software.
Then OOo would choose the good GUI.
Besides, an option in menu bar would allow to change the GUI.

E.g. synaptic could provide a history of what has been installed when along with the possiblity to remove it again.
Fore the people who sometimes evaluate software and afterwards want to remove it again (alon with all installed dependencies)

e.g.

Installed yesterday:
at 5:21pm (_remove_)
Selected
OpenOffice.org
Selected dependencies
Java (1 package depends on Java, _see list_)

Installed two days ago:
at 12:12pm (_remove_)
Selected
GIMP

at 2:59pm (_remove_)
Selected
Gnucash
Selected dependencies
AQbanking (2 packages depends on AQbanking, _see list_)

Currently it is very difficult to setup and control access to shared folders without editing conf files and reading detailed instructions on all the variables. I propose that sharing (specifically Samba) be given a well worked GUI and some real TLC to bring it up to standard with the experience on Windows or OS X.

For example, by default a share should be accessible as Read Only by anyone on the network without a username or password (guest access). While guest access should be turned on by default, it should also be easy to turn it off, and if desired to give guests read/write access to the folder.

You should also be able to specify local users who will have read/write access, and these local users should sync with smb users invisibly (ie: the user doesn't need to know that there are two password databases being used).

I propose the Properties window for a folder should contain a Sharing tab with all the options available to choose. I also propose a Shared Folders option in the Preferences menu should list the currently shared folders along with their settings, and provide a button to take you into the dialogue where you can set the options.

Hi!

I'm a big fan of Images like .iso.
But it is not very easy to mount this Images.
I think there must be a Tool in Nautilus and Dolphin wich alows mounting Images with a double Click. (This feature exists int MacOS). Or with a right click on the file and then there must be a poit "Mount Image". I thick that would be a very use full Tool for every one.
A good example for this is CDemu.

I know there are some ohter good programs, but I think that would be the easyest way and very confortible.

Change start page of Brainstorm to show latest ideas or something, else people will probably push for the already high-graded ideas and won't care of other newer ideas.

Maybe a page with random ideas?

And remove the grades if not specifically requested, since it will affect peoples voting.

New front page, with a descending (nb of votes)/(time since creation) sorting.
This way, the newest ideas have their chance to stand up!

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.
