Linux is the kind of OS that *can* do anything. For something so advanced, shouldn't it be easy to type extended ASCII characters? In Windows it is, you just have to hold down ALT and keypad in the ASCII code (example: ALT-133 gives you an 'a' with an accent). It shouldn't be too hard to implement a daemon that does this in Linux too.

Or there are other ways to get extended characters. A simple C program could print the 256 chars with their codes. Maybe there should be a command 'chars' that does just that. Then you could copy paste the chars you need.

ATM - at least in KDE, I don't know how it is in GNOME, if there is a popup dialog with the possibilities Yes,No,Cancel, you just have the Shortcut Keys "Alt+[key]".
[key] in that case is the underlined letter.

I think it would be good to have additionally the possibility to answer with 'y' and 'n'

or - at least in dialogs where there is no other keyboard interaction possible - let me press JUST the underlined letter, without the Alt key, to speed up my workflow.

This of course should be systemwide, additionally to the normal hot keys, and standardized.
e.g.
y -> yes
n -> no
s -> save
ESC -> Cancel (already works in most of the dialogs)

In firefox you can drag-and-drop your tabs from left to right. This is for me a really handy option since I often group tabs according to what they are about (e.g. left your work and right you private stuff). This is not possible with the windows you have open on your taskbar on the bottom of Gnome.
I know it is possible to use the different desktops, but I like to have things in one screen and drag-and-drop them from left to right on the taskbar.

Next to this, it is not possible to make the taskbar "double". Meaning, that when you have a lot of windows they are in two rows in the taskbar. This is possible with ms windows, but not in gnome.

Why not add a "Install latest release" icon to the LiveCD desktop?

Use Case:
You have an older or out-dated Ubuntu CD and with it you can install the latest Ubuntu release. The option is only visible if the LiveCD is able to connect to the internet for downloading the files.

So don't have to burn a new CD with every release. The installation will not take longer than installing an out-dated version and updateing from there.
If a feature like this was included you would be able to boot you Gusty, Feisty (just an example) LiveCD and click the icon on the desktop "Install latest release" an enjoy the installation process on Hardy.

I hope my idea is thoroughly explained - if not, please ask!
//MadsRH

(I should perhaps mention that a USB installation tool is planed for 8.10)

We need to change the default screensaver. The problem with the current screensaver is that the first time you meet it is when the screen suddenly turns black during the installation. That is very confusing for most users, as the first thought always is that the installation has crashed.

I suggest a screensaver that helps brand Ubuntu, like for example the "Floating Ubuntu" screensaver. It could also be a textbased screensaver that could run on older machines witch doesn't support 3D.
