Create "lock-sceen" dialog that looks similar to the login-window
Written by pepperpupper the 17 May 08 at 01:14. Category: Look and Feel. New
The "locked-sceen" dialog currently looks somewhat plain and boring. From a user point of view I think it would be better if it shared some of the artwork that appears on the login-screen.

So my suggestion is that the "locked-screen" dialog should be ubuntu-stylized in order to look more appealing, preferably looking similar to the default login-window.

More user information
Written by Primož Papič the 16 May 08 at 21:49. Category: Brainstorm. New
Maybe some of you like the anonymity, but I think it would be nice to have a bit more user information. But it shouldn't be mandatory.
Like:

When certain user joined the Brainstorm
Why this could be bad: Gerontocracy meaning that the users that are here from very beginning would be voted up, because they are here for so long, they know what they're talking...
Sex of the user; now Brainstorm assumes that all users on Brainstorm are males, hopefully there are some women users also. Then change for females from his ideas to hers ideas...
Number of ideas he or she posted so I don't to "see" all of them to know that.
Maybe also residence; from where users are...
"Latest idea posted Sunday 12.5.2008 at 13:35" to know how active is the user is.
....
--------
But not age, or make it "really" mandatory, because I admit that ideas that are proposed by 14-year old lose all of integrity with me. But they are even now easily detected because of their lack of their writing skills, that or English is their second or even third language (For me is second but I learned it since kindergarten, and there is always Firefox to repair your mistakes). I'm 21 years old if anyone wants to know.

Make recovery mode selection a little less obvious
Written by aysiu the 16 May 08 at 16:56. Category: System. New
Right now, the boot menu has regular Ubuntu, recovery mode, and memtest. With just a simple Down arrow, someone can accidentally boot into recovery mode.

Perhaps we should make recovery mode a little less obvious. Is there some way to make a special key combination or something to access recovery mode? Mac OS X has you hold down Cmd-S during bootup to boot into single-user mode. I'm not sure if Grub can do this, but it'd be cool if it could.

The reasoning behind this is more user-friendliness. Users who aren't comfortable at the command prompt might accidentally end up there and not know what to do.

The added benefit is that those who need the illusion of better security would also stop complaining that the existence of recovery mode is a security problem.

Offer a Children's Version of Ubuntu
Written by anno7490 the 16 May 08 at 15:05. Category: Education. New
Hi All,

My suggestion is that we develop a simple version of ubuntu for easy use by Kids. Nothing complicated just easy graphics and cool and simple applications. Something a 5year old would use.

Many Thanks

consolidate repos
Written by Plet the 15 May 08 at 21:02. Category: Others. New
Hi.

I am new in the world of Ubuntu(still in the dual boot phase), and i wonder why there areat least 2 repositories add/remove and synaptic...and others...???

My suggestion is either to make an one GUI to manage them, or simply just to consolidate all programs in one single repo!

(their might be a reason for having more repos, but it does not make sence to me... ;-) )

remove the "stretch icon" option from right-click-menu of mounted volumens

remove the "stretch icon" option from right-click-menu of mounted volumens

That gotta be the most useless option in Gnome..

No, seriously! The more crap the menu contains, the harder it will be to find the stuff that matters.

Before you vote it down, tell me, when would you ever use that function? Be honest!

Integrate loading the desktop with the login screen
Written by rainwalker the 14 May 08 at 03:29. Category: Look and Feel. New
This is kind of adding on to my idea about preloading the desktop...but better. As suggested by terlmann in the comments at http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8378/ it would be really cool if the loading of the desktop after successfully logging in were integrated into the login screen.
Instead of the gap between login screen and desktop (with or without a splash screen), I think it would look nicer if there was some sort of progress bar or indicator while the desktop loads after you log in, and then once it's done you get a fully-functional desktop right away?

Again, credit goes to terlmann

Idea for TV commercial
Written by Primož Papič the 14 May 08 at 10:14. Category: Marketing. New
There are some ideas about making TV commercial.
I'm just add some of my ideas how this commercial should look.
==============================================================
1) Make commercial from the video of Nelson Mandela explaining what ubuntu philosophy means. The video is included on live CD of Ubuntu.
there is great chance that this was already done.
2) Simple commercial where the "circle of humanity" would change from real human circle to Ubuntu logo. And on the end it would say Ubuntu: Linux for human beings
I decided to remove udea no. 3, because it really was a bad idea...
And I think that ideas 1 and 2 are quite good...
Idea no. 3 can be seen under comments...

Overview of who voted for my idea
Written by Primož Papič the 13 May 08 at 21:08. Category: Brainstorm. New
Many times we just vote without comment, so it's good that we could see in our dashboard who voted for our ideas.

Why is this good idea?
If this is implemented you could click on one of those that voted for your idea and see if his or hers ideas and ideas and ideas that hi voted for are similar to your thinking.
It's like: "hey this guy / gal liked my idea let me see if I like other ideas that he / she voted for"

Why could be this bad idea?
Voting up ideas that you don't like just in hope that those that came up with this idea vote yours ideas, as sing of thanks. But that's pretty lame (hopefully nobody does that)

Allow Wubi installs to Remove Windows via Add/Remove
Ubuntu has no way of easily uninstalling Windows

Right now, Wubi allows Windows users to install Ubuntu and, if they no longer need it, uninstall it. However, there is no way to easily uninstall Windows if it is no longer needed any more.

I propose that an item be created in Add/Remove that allows all Windows components to be removed, including having the Windows boot loader replaced entirely by GRUB, leaving the fully functioning Ubuntu installed on an NTFS partition.

Enhance Print screen button to take screenshots and screencasts.
Written by fordplay the 12 May 08 at 14:51. Category: Multimedia. New
I suggest that when a user presses the print screen button they get an option screen asking if they want to take a screenshot (static picture) or screencast (you guessed it, moving pictures).

There is software already to do this called Istanbul. However better software maybe available.

http://live.gnome.org/Istanbul#head-a2f80008250d78e8fc17174f337131b6d8c93b79

Building better screen capture software into the OS would help promote the OS and the screencasts themselves could be used to help others learn the system and solve any problems.

Codenames for other languages too
Written by bogdan_5844 the 12 May 08 at 07:02. Category: Marketing. New
Right now, ubuntu versions have funny codenames like Gutsy Gibbon,Hardy Heron, etc.

They sound great in English, but many users are not english-speaking(Here in Romania many people that I converted to Ubuntu love it,but they don't know a word in English)

I think it would be a great thing if each language had it's "translation" of the english codename.

Maybe we could involve the Ubuntu LoCo in this project.

Hibernate Option for Individual Processes Upon Close
Written by ravindranathakila the 12 May 08 at 09:39. Category: System. New
Just like VirtualBox manages to put the guest and it's execution state to hibernation, it would be nice if we could put our individual process to hibernation. It will be very tough to implement this, but its worth it. For example, if we hibernate Rythmbox, it would continue playing the song upon resuming. Integrate the to the top-right-corner menu of a window or the System Monitor's Edit menu. This means we could hibernate games, and all sorts of applications individually. If a system resume fails upon general hibernation, we have no fear or loosing that specific applications status as it was hibernated individually.

TrueCrypt along with Ubuntu
Written by ravindranathakila the 12 May 08 at 07:06. Category: Security. New
TrueCrypt is a high standard secure method of storing data supporting many high level encryption levels. http://www.truecrypt.org/screenshots.php
It should be implemented as encrypting an entire partition is not very practical these days. Only some data are important and the others are just data. I use TrueCrypt and it is extremely fast though it encrypts files on the fly. No latency what so ever.

More Friendly Terminal
Written by nicholas541 the 11 May 08 at 14:50. Category: System. New
Ubuntu needs to make the terminal a bit more attractive. It needs to have an easy list of common commands and extensive help. Many new Linux users don't even understand what a man page is, let alone know how to get to it. You could just type help to easily get information about commands and things like that. Even a welcome message would be great. It could say something like:
"Welcome to the terminal in Ubuntu. Please type commands to get a list of common commands. To get help for a command, just type help."

Remove eastereggs in OpenOffice.org

How about to remove some eastereggs left in OOo?
Like in Writer: write StarWriterTeam and press F3 or write =GAME("StarWars") in a cell in Calc.
