Ubuntu must be the most beautiful desktop
Written by henk0775 the 17 May 08 at 12:25. Category: Marketing. New
Mark said that "pretty is a feature".
Ubuntu must be eyecandy, pretty, beautiful, glossy. Sometimes human theme is not so, if we try other ones. For example, glossy theme works well.
My idea is beautiful by default.

n.b. Give attenction that this idea is in "marketing".

A somewhat different Ubuntu
Written by tomh38 the 9 Mar 08 at 20:31. Category: Look and Feel. New
I would like to see a version of Ubuntu for people who don't like graphical interfaces. It could have Links or Lynx, Mp3Blaster, Vi or Emacs, Midnight Commander, feh, fbida, etc. The first version could be called Cubuntu 8.08 Consoley Codemonkey.

Here's a screenshot of what it could look like:

Code Folding for gEdit
Written by Omega the 17 May 08 at 20:20. Category: Others. New
I really like gEdit, it's a simple app and abides by all gnome standards. Any changes in preferences are reflected in the editor.

I do wish however that ith ad more features. The first of which is code folding.

Plain and simple.

Provide a web service to convert files to open formats
Written by SchwarzeKrause the 17 May 08 at 22:21. Category: Marketing. New
As I understand, using closed codecs literally means breaking the law even while playing legal media in some countries. So, the current situation with Ubuntu is full of hypocrisy. Ubuntu's CD doesn't include illegal software, but every user would likely download and install it right after the installation is through. Fluendo codecs are an alternative, but a weak one.
Another point, is that the user is forced to use OpenOffice just because other products can't work with MS formats well. This is also inconvenient, since there are some lightweight solutions that can work with OASIS ODF and thus allow user to do all the basic tasks. And, after all, Office 2003 formats aren't supported even by OpenOffice at the moment.
So here is my suggestion on how to promote open technologies.
At the moment, there are already some web services to convert documents (or even music) from one format to another. For example, http://koolwire.com
So, what I am talking about, is a web-service, that would allow to convert audio files to OGG Vorbis and FLAC, video to OGG Theora, Microsoft Office files to OASIS ODF (and PDF, in case the conversion cannot be done well for some files). And it would be very nice, if the service would be integrated into the user's environment. So the software necessary for conversion would be installed only on those servers, which can be located in countries where patent issues are not a problem.
Probably, this initiative requires some really mighty servers, but I guess that this can be done on behalf of the Open Source community on the whole, not just Ubuntu/Canonical, so the funds necessary would be raised and the service will be free of charge. After all it's a real opprotunity to promote free standarts.

a Data detector
Written by pierre.slamich@gmail.com the 17 May 08 at 18:22. Category: Office. New
The idea would be to integrate a data detector that analyzes patterns in messages, chat , and when the users hoovers over it, a contextual menu appears proposing add-hoc actions.

This article describes the implementation of this feature in Leopard in more details. Please take 2 seconds to skim through it before voting.

Written by anno7490 the 16 May 08 at 15:05. Category: Education. New
Hi All,

My suggestion is that we develop a simple version of ubuntu for easy use by Kids. Nothing complicated just easy graphics and cool and simple applications. Something a 5year old would use.

Many Thanks

Front-end for UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall)
Written by massond the 17 May 08 at 09:26. Category: Security. New
I propose that there be a front-end for UFW. The front-end would have to be easy enough for the average person to use.

Give user a user-picture by default and show that picture on the login window
Written by pepperpupper the 17 May 08 at 00:58. Category: Look and Feel. New
Using the "about me" tool, it is possible to set a user-pictue for the user that is logged in. I think Ubuntu should set a random picture from one of the pre-created ones by default. This picture should then be displayed on the login-window by default. This is an easy thing to do and creates a more professional feeling of the login window.

Terminal should prompt before any major change
Written by Primož Papič the 17 May 08 at 20:32. Category: Security. New
Priority: Ultra High
Realisation: easy? (update bash?)
I know that some might not agree, but there are many good reasons for Terminal to have more prompt messages.
Now terminal prompts you about apt-get install, which is pretty much useless, as you can easily write sudo apt-get install yourprogram -s, for simulation and then decide if you want to install it. But if you write rm -rf it will format your disk without prompting. The same stands with command that gives your user an root account.
I never used any of it, but I heard that this two don't prompt.
You would say that if you write rm -rf in your terminal, you know what your doing. But this is not always the case.
With Linux users numbers rising there will also be nuber of those that would like to show the Linux users that their system isn't without it's flaws. I read somewhere that you can make an script for terminal that contains rm -rf command. I don't know if it really "works" like an virus meaning you could get it from the net and accidentally run it, but it's still an big problem. But this could be simply overridden if rm -rf command would always prompt: "Do you really want to format your partition? N/y".
The same should apply to whatever that command is, that gives you root power. The prompt should state: "This will render your computer useless, proceed? N/y"
There are probably other very useful commands that can be abused or misused, but I don't know them. All of this commands should come with the prompt. If apt-get can come with the prompt so can these.
If Linux wants ever to be used by general public, this should be done ASAP.

Wine installations for the Whole system
Written by randall29 the 17 May 08 at 18:54. Category: Others. New
Ok, I know it's not exactly an Ubuntu-related idea, but I think it's important.

Actually, when a user installs a program in Wine, only this user has the autorisation to access the program, meaning that if two or more persons want to access the software, they must share one user account, or install the program for each user, resulting in a lost of disk space (especially when it comes to Office or Photoshop).

I propose a installation mode, which should use sudo, and could create another fake C: drive somewhere in /, so that the programs can be installed for the whole system.
Of course, it should still be possible to install programs only for one user, with the actual way of installation.

Wine would then check in the user virtual C drive for programs, and PolicyKit could be used (if possible to integrate it in Wine) for launching system-wide programs.
Not in sudo mode, of course, just an authentication process (cause it's localized in the main directory tree).

Another solution could be to make the virtual C drives or some parts of it (like the folder containing the program) accessible to other users via an authentication process or a sharing thing.

Fix the Hardy Heron countdown image: "now available" instead of "coming soon"
Written by John Karahalis the 17 May 08 at 17:02. Category: Marketing. Not an idea
This webpage - http://geek2live.blogspot.com/2008/03/fedora-9-screenshots.html - includes the Hardy Heron "countdown" image which Ubuntu provided via their website (right side of webpage). The actual image file resides on ubuntu.com, not this individual's server.

The image says that Hardy Heron is "coming soon". Please fix this image so that it correctly represents the status of Hardy Heron - that is, "now available".

Theme competition
Written by Eldmannen the 17 May 08 at 16:54. Category: Look and Feel. New
Themes can make a desktop look really great.

We should have theme competitions where people can send in their contributions for review and get a winner.

Individual artists like people from DeviantArt, etc can contribute, or professional design studios can contribute and get some nice coverage.

The winning theme can get shipped with the next release of Ubuntu. (Not necessarily as the default theme, but as an alternative)

Rules: the theme must be "free".

Artists will get the chance to compete and test their skills and show off their abilities.
We will get some awesome looking themes.

A prize could also perhaps be awarded to the winner to incite motivation.

More user information
Written by Primož Papič the 16 May 08 at 21:49. Category: Brainstorm. New
Maybe some of you like the anonymity, but I think it would be nice to have a bit more user information. But it shouldn't be mandatory.
Like:

When certain user joined the Brainstorm
Why this could be bad: Gerontocracy meaning that the users that are here from very beginning would be voted up, because they are here for so long, they know what they're talking...
Sex of the user; now Brainstorm assumes that all users on Brainstorm are males, hopefully there are some women users also. Then change for females from his ideas to hers ideas...
Number of ideas he or she posted so I don't to "see" all of them to know that.
Maybe also residence; from where users are...
"Latest idea posted Sunday 12.5.2008 at 13:35" to know how active is the user is.
....
--------
But not age, or make it "really" mandatory, because I admit that ideas that are proposed by 14-year old lose all of integrity with me. But they are even now easily detected because of their lack of their writing skills, that or English is their second or even third language (For me is second but I learned it since kindergarten, and there is always Firefox to repair your mistakes). I'm 21 years old if anyone wants to know.

Sessions should be password protected?   forum
Written by dmacdonald111 the 17 May 08 at 00:09. Category: Security. New
I feel that the sessions should be password protected. The reason for this, I feel, although a little extreme in example, is that without sessions being protected, these could be changed by an outsider or on a network. Once this has been achieved, anything could be added without the current users' knowledge. All it would need is a keypress tracker or some similar program to be inserted and the user could have anything done to them.

It could be me being a bit paranoid, but even in a certain operating system I never could understand why the start menu was not protected in any way. It can even put an 'invisible' link in there. Perhaps the same could be done in ubuntu?

TrueCrypt along with Ubuntu
Written by ravindranathakila the 12 May 08 at 07:06. Category: Security. New
TrueCrypt is a high standard secure method of storing data supporting many high level encryption levels. http://www.truecrypt.org/screenshots.php
It should be implemented as encrypting an entire partition is not very practical these days. Only some data are important and the others are just data. I use TrueCrypt and it is extremely fast though it encrypts files on the fly. No latency what so ever.

Provide a notification balloon when a network cable is unplugged from a network interface.

Sometimes you don't know if a cable works or not, or the cable is damaged, or it accidentally gets pulled out.

There should be some visual indication that the network cable has been unplugged.

Please see illustration of concept:

Add Additional Compiz Fusion Plugins to the Universe Repository
Written by sapwnage the 17 May 08 at 01:10. Category: Look and Feel. New
Many users want to have additional Compiz Fusion plugins that aren't in the "plugins-main" or "plugins-extra" packages. There are a growing number of plugins but many aren't available through those two packages. There are many howtos on ubuntuforums.org but many have issues and aren't that easy for beginners. It would be nice if you didn't have to compile from git just to get some cool plugins you saw on YouTube. There should be packages for individual plugins in the universe repository that can be easily install with APT. For example, the snow plugin could be in a package called "compiz-fusion-plugin-snow" or something similar.
