When running "sudo apt-get install ??????-desktop....
Written by fikelfikel the 14 Nov 08 at 17:59. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
...You should be able to seperate any of the apps that apt installs. That way, each of the Desktop Enviornments will be able to keep their own apps to their self. You should at least have the option.

Careful with pop-ups and balloons
Written by Lenx the 8 Nov 08 at 11:34. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu 8.10 has a new pop-up balloon, every time the desktop starts, it says a network connection is found.

This is not necessary and annoying!

Pop-ups and pop-up balloons are only useful when there is something wrong and the user REALLY NEEDS to be aware of it before proceeding his/her current activity. Otherwise it's just plain annoying, inconsiderate and very windows-like.

Alright, how to solve it then?

1. Use balloons only when REALLY needed (lost network connection, etc...)
2. Provide at least an easy and intuitive way to disable them forever, like a little option button on the balloon itself.
3. Make them less intrusive. Balloons should softly come in, be opaque and softly go away after 5 seconds if the user didn't click it. Also keep them small.

Written by xolvo the 20 Oct 08 at 17:21. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nautilus. New
Hi!

I think, that Ubuntu interface is not very nice ))
But Compiz and some nice effects make it more better then Vista interface for example =)
But I cannot still use Ubuntu as my default system because of it's look (may be it sounds strange for you)
I know, you can make this better.

And finaly my suggestion.
There is Zoom effect in Nautilus. Can you make it like this:

http://jimmac.musichall.cz/images/guimockups/xgl/nautilus_window.ogg

I found this video on this page http://jimmac.musichall.cz/guimockups.php?mockup=xgl
There are many interesting concept in the interface

And finaly, can you make better interface for all your OS in the future.

p.s. Sorry, if my English was bad for you

Create a lyric-plugin for Totem, that would connect to http://lyricwiki.org when playing a song, look it up and display its lyrics!

Add support for common resolution 1680x1050
Written by nandersson the 4 Oct 08 at 09:28. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Using System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution in a dual screen setup doesn't seem to support the common resolution 1680x1050.

Am I the only one having problems with this configuration or is it a lacking feature in Gnome?

I would like to see it fixed anyhow.

true colaborative illustrations for wallpapers
Written by nitrofurano the 26 Sep 08 at 23:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Live CD. New
In an Orkut community, some colaborative experimentation were done there:
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2415/curupirawallpck7.png
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Community.aspx?cmm=14942265

Since the whole illustration colaborative process is so unstressing, exciting, productive, and surprising, would be interesting if the Ubuntu illustrations could be done with this intense colaborative method.

DICOOo is OpenOffice's dictionary installing wizard. When I have effects on, the window is too small to use, and you can't make it bigger. A little mention in the document it shows before launching would be nice.

MS Exchange Calandering support
Written by linuxworks the 29 Feb 08 at 08:15. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is more of a Mozilla Thunderbird issue but I think Ubuntu should push more for better calendering integration using the SDK provide by MS .

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms988691%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx

Calendaring

Microsoft® Exchange Server 2003 includes rich calendaring features that you can use to build calendaring applications. Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) provides the logic necessary to create applications that incorporate appointments, meetings, messages, and other calendaring items. The topics in this section describe how to use CDO to develop custom calendaring solutions.

//Creating an Appointment with CDOEx

adModeRead = 1,

Ship a spider solitaire-game by default
Written by pepperpupper the 18 Sep 08 at 13:54. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
My mother refuses to switch to Ubuntu till she can play her "spider-solitaire" game that she could play on windows. This seem to be a popular game, so it would be nice to have something like that shipped by default or in the repos.

Shutdown without delay after hitting the shutdown button twice
Written by Magnes the 23 Sep 08 at 11:09. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Right know as I heard in Ubuntu 8.10 when you hit shutdown button on your computer, the system will shut down after 60 seconds.
It would be nice if it would ignore those timeout and shut down immediately after hitting the button twice.

Bootcamp for Ubuntu
Written by ripperzane the 19 Sep 08 at 18:17. Category: Installation. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
I have many times installed Ubuntu, then decided I wanted to dual boot. I am aware of projects like Lubi (Wubi for Linux), but how about an alternative so you can 1. Install Ubuntu, then install Windows and not loose grub or 2. Install it in a loopback file and it is all automatic within the OS.

Examples would be:
You want to try out a new Ubuntu variant/upgrade without committing your system to the changes.

Another is the obvious: Install Windows while using Ubuntu as main system. Ex. for relevance: taking an online course (3d Modeling/graphics design) where 3d rendering apps do not work well enough in a virtual machine. After the class is done, you can remove windows from synaptic.

better interaction between programs( i can't drag the calculator-text into writer )

making windows support default.

integrate with brainstorm, so people can directly send their idea's when they got one.

try to make some non-annoying hints to get developers help for improving Ubuntu.

that's a list of idea's i have got, please add your own idea to!

Increase kernel ram support up to 16GB in x86 arch
Written by przem the 19 Sep 08 at 19:35. Category: System. Related to: Update manager. New
Increase amount of ram supported by kernel from 4GB up to 16GB for x86 architecture.

Lot of people buys computers with at least 4gb ram, so to use full power they need to recompile the kernel every time update comes.

I'm one of them, system sees normaly only 3GB of ram, but after kernel recompilation, which was a pain i must say, everything works as it should.

so please do the small change, so we users will not need to do it everytime.

best regards,
przem

Install GIMP by default in one window (gimpshop)
Written by kramer65 the 19 Sep 08 at 10:20. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: GIMP Image Editor. New
I am trying to use the gimp more and more, but one of the biggest drawbacks I see is the fact that it are all different windows. I have to work in the image AND constantly change settings in the main window. This is very annoying since I constantly have to go back to my taskbar to "search for" the gimp, change a setting, and go back to the image.
This is very annoying when you've got many images open which you're working on and the taskbar is therefore full of things..

It should come in one window by default.

ps. I tried to install gimpshop several timees but it always gives me errors or doesn't work.

Give a random avatar by default
Written by pepperpupper the 18 Sep 08 at 14:01. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
It is possible to select an avatar using "about me". Having an avatar really improves the aesthetics of the system, especially in 8.10. Some users do not immediately know where to select one, so it would be nice to have one randomly selected at install.

unlock computer theme in tandem with gnome theme
Written by sealview the 17 Sep 08 at 10:14. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Sorry but the current unlock applet/window does not follow the selected gnome theme, I suppose is not only a bug to my distro.
I use 8.04 and I customized a theme founded in the Intrepid Artwork, a theme that I like very much (the WillWill100's idea), but when I lock down my laptop and come back, the unlock applet is so rudimentary it doesn't follow the color scheme of my theme.

I wonder if we couldn't make something similar (probably lighter) to GDM, it would be nicer.

Also should keep your wallpaper visible.

Thanks!
