Open xcf with eog/gthumb/...

I know that this is more a Gnome issue than an Ubuntu, but it would be neat to view .xcf files (that pictures made with GIMP) with one of the normal picture managers like Eye of Gnome or GThumb. For example KolourPaint can open them, though it can't handle layers and all the GIMP-specific things XCF was made for. But you can view the picture with one click and one window and without waiting for a big program (Gimp) to load.
Shouldn't be such a big issue to implement this.
And it is very useful when you have many XCF files, but don't want to waste space for PNGs just to easy-view them with eog/gthumb/... (like me).

Pidgin 2.5 For intrepid Ibex

Not an idea

Pidgin 2.5 has just entered string freeze, release date is the 15th august.
If we like it or not, pidgin and other instant messengers are one of the most used applications by regular users(aka human beings) after the web browser; Making their experience as nice as possible should be a top priority.
New stuff in Pidgin 2.5 includes the upgrade to MSN Protocol 15. which - unfortunately - still has the majority of users in many areas of the world.

Create a "we want to play on ubuntu" page

Create a place where we linux users can shout out to the world "WE WANT TO PLAY ON UBUNTU LINUX"
Let us all sign and show the big companies that we exist and we are a potential marked that grows more and more every day!
Instead of asking the ubuntu team to make games work with ubuntu linux (which is quite stupid, hows that suposed to work and how much waste of development would that be?) make the gaming companies see that we exist and want support! Dont let all our requests get scattered and ignored over the www, make them all meet and bundle at one official ubuntu page.
There are games done for windows, mac, wii, ps3, psp and all other plataforms, why not ubuntu linux?
If the gaming world is able to visit a page and see "xxxxxxx ubuntu linux users want to play games!" why shouldnt they start doing it? It should be much easyer to develop games for a WORKING OS then for windows, with all its bugs and problems. That would mean less work for them, less support needed and more fun for us!
Please ubuntu team! Help us shout out!
PS: that can also be used for other types of applications, but I think games are the sollution to give Ubuntu the suport it needs. Games for Ubuntu bring working hardware for ubuntu (remember the nvidia logo before each game? "the way its meant to be played"?) and support from all companies who sell things to gamers.
Gaming mouses/keyboards joysticks... every big hardware company has something for gamers. If they start producing working drivers for that section, the other products will follow.

Evolution - Move deleted items to folder

Evolution automatically moves deleted items to the 'deleted items' section in Evolution which is not a folder on the server, meaning if you login to the webmail interface all the deleted emails are still in their original folders.
Evolution should have an option to move deleted items to the specified folder, just like it allows you to select the 'Sent' and 'Drafts' folders.
I cannot delete the 'Trash' folder, and because of Evolution I cannot use it either. I can also put decent filtering on my server folders, such as automatically deleting emails that are more than a month old, which cannot be done with Evolution (which could be a whole other feature request).

"Ubuntu for Beginners" virtual and physical book

I got this idea when I saw a post on some random forum, where someone had said that they would consider dual booting into Ubuntu, if there were a 'Ubuntu/Linux for beginners' book that wasn't for 30$.
He was looking on amazon at the time, and probably did not even look at the Ubuntu documentation. I haven't either until now. It's not easy to read and certainly not designed for beginners.
So, what I'm thinking is to provide exactly what he was thinking. A "Ubuntu for beginners" virtual book that can be easily printed and distributed with an open source licenses, Similar to the "wikipedia" physical books. The book may be sold for the cost of materials, or could easily be printed from home.
It could be featured somehow on Ubuntu's "shipit", as an option for new users.
Since it is specifically designed for beginners, it should not be deeper than necessary, and explain everything someone new to Linux needs to know to install and use Ubuntu.
The actual website for constructing should be Drupal with the "books" module. Many of the Ubuntu website's are already using Drupal (Including Ubuntu QA), and the books module provides the best and easiest features for both writers and readers. The pages can be easily ordered and structured in the book. The pages can be individually viewed, individually printed, or printed as a book.
Since Ubuntu QA already uses Drupal framework, it makes sense to use it on this "site" but give it it's own subdomain. Users of Ubuntu QA will not need a new account and Drupal will not need to be re-themed as much.

Make visual-effects alt-tab display 5 thumbnails instead of 3.

Ironically, moving to "normal" and "extra" visual effects makes alt-tab display thumbnails of your window choices (good) but cuts the display down to three cycling choices at a time (bad).
When no visual effects are on, it displays all of my so that I can easily tab to the exact one that I already know I'm looking for.
I, for example, have 13 different windows open, so alt-tab makes me see less than a quarter of 'em, which makes it harder to tab the exact number of times to get to the exact right one.

I think it would be very useful to use keyword matching to display a handful of links to similar/related ideas when you are looking at an idea. This would allow easier browsing of ideas which are likely to be of interest to you, and make it easier to spot duplicate ideas and report them.
All it would take would be a small addition to the currently underused left-hand pane of this website.

Brainstorm: Separate KDE and Gnome specific ideas

Many of the ideas on brainstorm are related to Gnome itself, rather than Ubuntu.
Perhaps interface specific ideas should be separated into categories for Gnome, KDE, Xfce ideas, so that users of Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc can participate in brainstorm, improving the base Ubuntu, without having to sift through ideas that don't affect them because they are Gnome specific.
This would also make it easier for brainstorm to submit ideas to upstream developers.

Currently many sites such as Digg already do this. It saves you a click and it's intuitive...surely you approve of your own submission, right?

Please show the number of ideas in each category, in parenthesis. For example:
Ideas being worked upon (123)
Implemented ideas (57)
Accessibility (145)
Brainstorm (456)
etc.
It should also show how many ideas there are in total somewhere....
Thanks

It is likely that the situation will occur that you vote an idea up or down, only to then take part in the discussion and change your mind about it. After all, there is bound to be someone with more expertise with a different view on the subject that you hadn't considered. Currently, you cannot see, remove or reverse your vote. I think you should be able to, on the basis that it would give a more accurate and up-to-date representation of user opinion.
The counter-argument to this would be that it could cause an element of uncertainty, but I do not feel that avoiding this should come at the expense of being able to change your mind.

Integrate software usage statistics information into synaptic

Since Ubuntu is already collecting software usage information it would be nice if it could be integrated into synaptic.
e.g. there would be a list like "Top Multimedia Programs used under Ubuntu" and|or "Overall top used Programs" and so on.
Might be not only interesting but also helpful. Also each program could have a small bar indicating how popular it actually is. So if I want to install a video player I can see which program is used most from the list of all the often very numerous alternatives.

Suggest a backup before upgrading

I think there should be some warning about it when you start upgrading. It should suggest backing up all important data. it should also explain that some third party applications might not work properly.
For experienced users ,it might seem trivial. But my friend just upgraded her Mac and now it doesn't boot. She didn't make any backups.
It is difficult to estimate how prevalent this problem is in Ubuntu but whenever a new version comes out there are many unsuccessful upgrade stories in the forum.
