So I right-clicked on a file and selected "Cut" in the context menu.
So that I later could "Paste" the file into another directory.

Make so that when you select "Cut" on a file, the icon becomes dimmed.
Because right now, there are no visual indication, so you don't know it worked.
In Windows there is a visual notification by the icon becoming dimmed.
In Ubuntu there is no visual notification, the icon does not become dimmed. This is confusing.

Make Gnome vector grapics like KDE/OSX/Vista now!

One of the serious problems in Ubuntu is that Gnome is a bit sluggish when it comes down to the graphics. Try to install AWN and you know that the icons literally look like shit (compared to OSX).
But the problem does not end there, the whole system should be vector graphics by now when it comes to rendering the windows, menus, icons and so on.

I know this is not a Ubuntu feature, but it should be pressed HARD upon so we also get the great crisp sharp user-interface OSX has. It does not make the system slower, just better. With vector graphics, CompizFusion could take a new leap forward since it is then not hold back by the limitations of bitmap images. Also new graphical applications would be easier to develop, see on the mac side where Quartz engine has helped make a sea out of new graphical applications. We need a Quarz engine for Gnome now!

Include Compiz Fusion Manager by default

Developer comments
Sorry, but no. The stack has to mature. DRI2, drivers and default settings of compiz are the things that need attention. Adding and enabling "power-user"-features by default, which are only used by a fraction of the whole user-base, is an unnecessary introduction of UI-clutter we try to avoid.

Enable Nautilus to use tabs.

Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.

This is implemented! See the Gnome 2.24 release notes.

Allow users to attach "bounties" to Ubuntu Brainstorm ideas
Written by Auzy the 29 Feb 08 at 11:41. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be great if users could attach money to Brainstorm ideas. Its all good and well to post hundreds of ideas, but as things go, ideas which are posted first may not be the best ideas, but will climb to the top fastest (and will stay there, because people will vote for them on most popular).

Lets make it possible for people to donate $5 or so to their own ideas. Sure nobody may implement it, or the patch may not be accepted but it opens things up a lot more. Nobody loses either.

For those who think that this will turn linux coders into people who only code for money are wrong. There have been many bounties in the past, and they have not wiped out the many developers (me inclusive) who code as a hobby. Even with the gnome bounties in place, I still continued coding my application at the time for instance.

Anyway, at the end of the day, its not hard to implement, and it will do nothing but speed up development for highly wanted features (and maybe even organisations like gnome could use the money on spreading word about linux, or improving their hardware support).

Engage DeviantArt for Ubuntu theme competition

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Consistent and customizable logo on panel
Written by Denis the 2 Apr 08 at 21:30. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Ubuntu panel logo should be preserved when changing themes. Also users should be able to chose a custom logo.

At this moment the default Ubuntu theme has the Ubuntu logo on the panel, in the upper left corner.

However, there are two issues with the current system:
1. Custom themes may force their own logo, thus overwriting the Ubuntu logo. It does not work well because an arrow appears over the custom logo.
2. Users have no easy way of setting a custom logo. They have to adjust a bunch of images and files.

Users may want a consistent logo to be displayed, even after changing themes. This logo consistency can also strengthen the Ubuntu brand. Additionally users should be able to chose a custom logo. Some people, for example, may like the Gnome foot better.

Start taking advantage of Upstart

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

Developer comments
The primary reason that we're not taking full advantage of Upstart yet is that it still requires some development to have sufficient features to actually be better than sysvinit. You can follow Upstart development at its homepage.

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.

Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

I have a Logitech Mx510 mouse.

It has a backwards and a forwards key on the side. In Windows these keys can be used to navigate backward and forward in the browser and file manager.

In Ubuntu these buttons are detected but have no effect in Firefox and Nautilus. Please make these buttons work by default in these applications.

Disable Screensaver while playing movies or slideshows

It is unnerving to touch buttons when the screensaver runs while a movie is playing.

The default media player, Totem, already does this. If an application does not do this then please file a bug with that application in Launchpad.

symbolic links to files on the internet
Written by harsha the 2 Apr 08 at 18:06. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be nice to have shortcuts to documents on the internet stored in folders. When double-clicked in nautilus, the default viewer should be used to open it (for instance pdfs would be opened by evince or something similar). This is much more convenient than bookmarking links in the browser.
There are a lot of documents, books on the internet, and this would make accessing them as simple as accessing local files without actually storing them on the hard disk.

Once this is implemented it should be possible to open a terminal and when a shell command like "more foo" is entered, and if foo is linked to a txt file somewhere on the internet, the contents of foo should be displayed just like a local text file.
The file should be indistinguishable to the os from other files except that write operations aren't allowed. when the network is down, the read permission is also set to infinity.

Scalable image thumbnails in Nautilus

In Nautilus, there is an option to view thumbnails of images. This is all very well for the default size icons for thumbnails.

However, if the thumbnail is made larger using the "stretch icon" function in Nautilus, the icon remains at the same resolution, making it appear blurry and pixelated.

Would it be possible to scale the preview of the image directly to the size of the displayed thumbnail?

EDIT: On Hardy there appears to be a big problem in that the images are regenerated each time the folder is opened, leading to large delays and higher system load whilst they are being generated. Navigation away from the folder results in the generated images being lost.

Canonical Store should allow bank transfer payment method
Written by Nomax the 16 Mar 08 at 20:26. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Canonical Store ( http://shop.canonical.com/) accepts payments by credit cards and Paypal (which requires a credit card anyway) only.

It prevents people who don't have a credit card from purchasing Ubuntu goods...

Pre-payment by bank transfer should be added to the payment methods.

It has many advantages:

1 - Standard. Many people own a bank account without credit card, so they would get many more orders.

2 - Secure. Payment was made before shipping the goods. So no risk for Canonical to never get the money.

3 - Cheap. Since 2003, bank transfers made within European Union (including UK) don't cost more than a national transfer (using IBAN/BIC). So no extra charge apply on buyer's side. And unlike Paypal and credit cards, no charge apply on seller's side (since it's a standard bank transfer, banks can't charge for it).

I have a 100 € order pending for months at Canonical because I have no credit card. I sent them an e-mail asking about bank transfer payments which they never replied to. I'm sure that I'm not the only one suffering from this.
