make Gnome-app-install more like iPhone's app store

Once again, Apple didn't invent anything new (software repos) but they sure showed us how to do it the right way! Not only is iPhone's app store is beautifully simple, it features detailed descriptions, screenshots, reviews, ratings, and more without being overwhelming or cluttered.
It allows you to see the "Top 25" applications downloaded by users at the moment, A selection for the newest applications, and ones that are being specially featured by Apple. And, because of the iTunes account, it's also extremely easy to purchase applications without having to re-enter credit card information or anything like that.
Now, imagine what a desktop implementation of that is going to look like in the next version of OS X. Or, don't imagine it. Build it for Ubuntu first. Take gnome-app-install and beef it up with some of the before-mentioned features. Revise the rating system so that we can actually RATE something. Add paypal support (or something equivalent), so that we can donate to specific projects from our desktops without hunting around their website. And make it beautiful and simple, so that it will be a major selling point for new users.
Developer comments
Thanks for your suggestion. However, a suggestion of the form “Make it more like Something Else” isn’t really useful. It would be better to propose individual ideas for the features you think Add/Remove should have (screenshots, reviews, ratings, and so on). Many of these already have been proposed as separate ideas in the Add/Remove category. —mpt

Propose an idea extension

Sometimes, you have a great idea, but the way you word it isn't so great. Then, somebody comes along and paints a picture of exactly what you wanted to say in a duplicate post.
So my idea is that you are able to propose an extension of the idea to its original author that he can later approve or disapprove.
This will hopefully reduce the number of duplicate posts due to an idea being unclear and further encourage actual brainstorming among groups, not just individuals.

merge our package managers

Won't implement

Right now we have three package managers: gnome-app-install, Synaptic, and the .deb installer.
Why can't these be one application?
give gnome-app-install a backend to handle .deb files, or give it an administrative mode where it has all the power tools that synaptic has. Start somewhere. But end with one spot to manage every application installed on my system, no matter how it got there.
As a side note, another idea was automated install of tarballs. I know this will never be a perfect system because not all tarballs use the generic install method. But maybe push for some way to seperate and deal with those who do use the generic method.
There should be absolutely no reason for anyone to say that its easier to install, manage, and update apps on any other platform than Linux!

Toolbar Editor for Nautilus

Not an idea

In other applications, such as Eye-of-Gnome and Firefox, we have the ability to customize the toolbar configuration.
This would be great to have in Nautilus as well! I'm sure there are quite a few people who would like to move or change things, or maybe reduce Nautilus to having a single toolbar instead of the configuration it has now.

This is probably going to be voted into oblivion. But here goes.
Coming from a mac, I like to have the close, min, max buttons on the left side of my window. Yes, I know I can change it in Gconf editor.
But wouldn't it be nicer if I could do it graphically?
Also, this might be a bad idea to say this but, last time I checked, this could be configured graphically in kde...

Have a section on brainstorm where we can see the top 10 developer picks for the month. This will do many things:
1. Get developers to see and pay attention to this website. (I hope that they already do)
2. Let the community know that the developers actually do see and pay attention to this website.
3. Draw support or opposition to ideas that developers may be thinking about including in the next release.
4. Let the community know what sort of things that the developers are interested in seeing in Ubuntu :D
5. Give positive feedback to the contributors by letting them know that they made the top 10, even if their idea takes a long time or never actually gets implemented.

I recently bought the Ubuntu Intrepid DVD with the dubble sides printed. Well this always raises some questions when inserting the DVD's.
Right now it says "Use this side if you have a 64bit compatible CPU" so my logic tells me that if I should use THIS side... that side should be down right? cause the laser reads from the bottom up? But that aside... it's confusing...

Make Wubi Distro Agnostic

I know that we want to have a leg up over other distro's in order to "be the best." But, it would a nice thing for the community if Wubi worked for any bootable .ISO
I'm not sure exactly how Wubi works, and if this is even possible. But, if we could do it, it would help spread desktop Linux quite a bit.

What to do with Ideas that aren't Ideas...

So, its nice that things are marked not and idea or duplicate or spam or done or whatever. But why are they still there? They just clutter everything up.
Ideas that are marked should not show up unless you are searching for them. They make a mess out of the popular, latests, and random lists.
Anything marked as not an idea should be deleted, or at least moved to another section of the website as an example of a bad submission.
Dupes should be overwritten with just a link to the original idea.
Bugs should be moved to their own section, or deleted.
Basically, things that don't really have any need for a vote should be pushed out of the public eye, allowing better ideas to be exposed.
