If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!
Written by DPic the 4 Aug 08 at 01:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.

How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability

I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light

I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs

Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!

P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Support 3D Stereo Shutter Glasses, and 3D displays
Written by tebibyte the 15 Jun 08 at 00:19. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It's Ubuntu & Compiz ...IN 3D! Adding support for shutter glasses (which let each eye see a slightly different image from the monitor) would be really cool! OpenGL Games and the Ubuntu UI would be rendered in 3 dimensions. Philips is also has a 3D monitor, which you don't need any glasses for to see the 3D effect.

Proprietary drivers would probably be required. Nvidia has 3D stereo drivers, but they only support windows :.(

This idea is a long shot to implement...but it would sure be awesome!

lowercase folder names
Written by Roanoke the 1 Mar 08 at 19:31. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you get a home directory, all the folders are capitalized. This really hurts when using the commandline. If they can't all be converted to lowercase by default, at least have an option do do so.

Better Gtk Open File Dialog
Written by hubertf the 1 Mar 08 at 13:50. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The gtk open file dialog is a pain to use...

-> No thumbnails for images
-> No many way to sort the files
-> No way to cut and paste files...
-> and it's very slow when opening a directory with many files

Tell Mozilla to count all the Firefox 3 downloads from repository
Written by unimatrix the 30 May 08 at 13:00. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
When Firefox 3 is released, make sure it is available to Ubuntu on the same day, so the updates from the Ubuntu repository can be counted for the *Guinness world record* in most downloads in 24 hours.
And most importantly, talk to Mozilla about relaying your Firefox 3 repository download data to them.
More info here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord

Let's help open source achieve another great victory!

RE to developer: You would have counted downloads, not users...

Developer comments
This wasn't doable, there's no real accurate way to count Ubuntu users.

Now when you use the Human theme, you're stuck with brown.

You should be able to pick a color of your own likening so that you can choose blue, green, yellow, white, orange, black, gray, purple, teal, pink or whatever you like.

Check this awesome artwork that I made!
* http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/317/coloredthemeyz9.png
* http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7682/colortheme2ls1.png
* Steel
* Rainbow

From idea #9139 (merged):

Currently the theming is all over the place and changing one place does not affect any other. Although that kind of tweakability is great, most users just want different default colors. (pink, blue, brown, black)

What we should be having:
A: wallpaper - changes every release
B: color-theme - human (easily configurable by user!)
C: splash-canvas - human (we need to create this)
D: gtk-engine - clearlooks with B as default colors
E: kde-engine - oxygen with B as default colors
F: icon-theme - tango with color-filter using B

From these we could generate:

Add 'Get Involved' to System menu
Written by michaeljm20 the 17 Jun 08 at 23:52. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In a bid to make new users feel as though they can 'contribute' to Ubuntu, and give them an opportunity to discover brainstorm, I suggest a menu linking to sections of the website.

The menu would be added underneath the 'About Ubuntu' item and link to the options of the 'Get Involved' page on the website like this...

System
>Get Involved
>>Development
>>Design
>>Documentation
>>Brainstorm
>>etc...

The icon for the menu should be the from the 'Get Involved' link on the Ubuntu home page, and the sub items their icons from the get involved page.

This should get more people involved in development, and give none technical users, like me, the chance to contribute on brainstorm, making Ubuntu a bit more personal.

Engage DeviantArt for Ubuntu theme competition

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Include apturl by default
Written by Eldmannen the 8 Apr 08 at 20:16. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
This makes it easier to install software, especially for noobs.

You can just visit some website, and click on a apt link, instead of use Synaptic.

Since it asks for confirmation and only can install software from the repository, it is safe.

Better eSATA support
Written by Corey the 8 Apr 08 at 02:35. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
eSATA is getting fairly popular. Many of the higher end drives at the local electronic stores sell support eSATA. I myself have an eSATA drive and an eSATA port on my motherboard, but sadly I must still connect to the drive over USB because eSATA isn't supported (at least not well enough for my devices to work). More eSATA support and drivers please!!!

Add the option "Use Art Manager to get wallpapers, themes..." in Appearance Mana
Written by adivinamee the 8 Apr 08 at 01:10. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Add the option "Use Art Manager to get wallpapers, themes..." in Appearance Manager.

There are Ubuntu repositories filled with themes, wallpapers, ..., but few people know these repositories, especially those "inexperienced".

You need to use a application to get these wallpapers and themes: "Art Manager". You need install it from repository.
This application lets you select and download a huge amount of themes, wallpapers, etc...

I intend to make this application more useful and known. One option is to integrate this program in the manager appearance: if you want to manage wallpapers, a button appears with the option "get wallpapers using Art Manager". Similarly, this button also put in the themes manager "get themes with Art Manager. This is useful because it is an easier and faster to obtain themes, and because most people do not know the repositories of wallpapers and themes.

Doing this does not seem difficult, it would be sufficient to add this link in the Appearance Manager, and that run this application "Manager Art" (which should come installed by default).

Sorry for my english.

Single login to Ubuntu websites
Written by brm the 3 Apr 08 at 02:36. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
It appears that one needs to create separate accounts (username and password) for ubuntuforums.org, launchpad.net and brainstorm.ubuntu.com

How difficult would it be to implement a single login?

Update : NOT a duplicate of OpenID idea #9.

Developer comments
OpenID will be implemented as the single-sign-on solution for Ubuntu websites.

Do not set the Ubuntu CD-ROM as a Default Repository for the Synaptic
Written by Iamreck the 6 Apr 08 at 04:45. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I found it very frustrating when I first got into Ubuntu, and was looking around at the Packages to install, that I had to have the installation CD in my computer. Especially since it was a laptop and I didn't have my CD Drive in.

I eventually found out how to remove it as a repository source.

It should not be set as default, or perhaps, if it isn't there, Synaptic should go and look on the internet. Which it doesn't.

Team up with Dell (RED) products   forum
Written by neon the 1 Apr 08 at 01:49. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
so I noticed on http://www.joinred.com/ that Windows has gotten together with Dell and is offering a (RED) version of Windows.

Why can't we do the same? Or at least have a (RED) version, and maybe charge a $1 (or more if the person so wanted) for it, with all the money going towards (RED)? :D

I think this would be REALLY awesome. It'd probly bring a lot of good attention to Ubuntu. If we could get this started soon, maybe it could be released with 8.04.1?

Make Wine 1.0 available in Hardy (through hardy-updates). This makes it easier for some companies who depend on XP software (which already works well in wine) to make the transition to Ubuntu.

IMHO it would be nice to release wine 1.0 through hardy-updates so everyone who hasn't disabled hardy-updates will get it. The wine 1.0 branch will probably continue to receive important updates making it easier for Ubuntu to maintain.

According to Eric S. Raymond's "World Domination 201" Wine is very important for Linux to become successful on the desktop.

Why wine is so important :
http://www.winehq.org/site/why
http://catb.org/~esr/writings/world-domination/world-domination-201.html

Wine 1.0 will release on june 6th. Hardy will release on june 5th. This makes it impossible to include wine 1.0 in Hardy except through hardy-backports or hardy-updates.

More information :

http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleasePlan

Developer comments
Wine 1.0 is released for Gutsy and Hardy through backports.
It will be available via update too soon on Hardy.
