include qemu(M$ windows) or any other virtual machine in live cd like wubi
Written by everlasting.puneet the 29 Jul 08 at 20:19. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
ubuntu live cd is to test and then install so i put a suggestion that ubuntu live cd should consist of an emulator which can run before installing from wubi.
this will be a new concept of testing ubuntu without rebooting windows. and new users will love that.

Create OSX binary compat layer, ship with Ubuntu
Written by ethana2 the 26 Jul 08 at 18:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
This idea is forfeited. I trust we all learned as much as I did. Have a good day.

"Theoretically, this should be less hit and miss than WINE, because osx is actually a decent, consistent operating system. [[I learned this was not true]] It may, however, require reimplementing quite a lot of code-- quartz, cocoa, carbon, mach, IOKit, what have you. [[dang straight it's a lot of code]]

Right now it's just looking like OSX may get to windows before we do, [[time to start trying harder as an evangelist]] and if it comes down to two awesome desktops and one has native apps and one doesn't, things could get ugly. As far as I'm concerned, this is the reason for GNUstep's existence. [[probably blasphemy there]]

At least get us a feasability report on this. [[Done.]]"

Many dmesg and syslog errors should appear as notification balloons as well
Written by Endolith the 29 Jun 08 at 19:47. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
For instance, if you plug in a USB device that is malfunctioning or not detected correctly, errors will be generated in the System Log, but nothing at all will happen in GNOME. Things like this should generate friendly graphical error balloons so that people at least recognize that something's gone wrong, instead of just thinking the device was not even recognized.

As braaivleis points out, it doesn't have to actually pop up the balloon; it can be like the updates icon that appears, but only shows a balloon when you click on it.

add a "view in english" button to all error messages
Written by briceparent the 30 May 08 at 09:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hello!
When you use Ubuntu in any other language than English, when an error message is shown, of course, it's shown in your own language.
...But, as the best way to solve the problem, is googling it, and as most of the documentation there is in english, it would be a good thing to have a button (or a right-click entry) on that kind of message to print (or copy to the clipboard) the exact syntax of the original message. When we try to translate it ourselves, we can't really now how it was written in the original message thought there are different translations for a single message that could be used.
This would also be great to help us submit bugs.

[EDIT] : As some of you said, showing standard error numbers would help us finding response, and wouldn't force the users to install English languages packs)
[/EDIT]

Thanks

Brice

Have Update Manager warn you if an update requires a reboot, BEFORE you update.   forum
Written by Catsceo the 29 May 08 at 19:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I find it very annoying when I update my Ubuntu box, only to find that after the update I need to reboot. I suggest a solution similar to Apple's software update*, where the update has the reboot icon located next to it to signify that a reboot will be needed or a reboot icon on the panel, similar to the way the new red down arrow in hardy signifies an important update.

Install Google Gears by default
Written by Auzy the 17 Jun 08 at 03:17. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Google Gears is a technology (licenced under The BSD License) that allows websites to work offline, and later sync with the server when the computer (or website) is online again. It is only 2MB, and wont slow down system performance at all, cross platform, and already works in FF3. It also makes the use of websites such as Google documents much more usable for laptop users, so they no longer need open office.

Some websites it works with it natively are:
Google Docs
Google Reader
Google Calender (support is under development, but there are hacks to get it working now)
Remember The milk

In fact, with Greasemonkey, you can inject gears code in to allow offline use of websites like wikipedia too!

Technologies such as Google Gears and prism will not only allow us to become less dependant on installed programs (such as openoffice), but will soon be commonplace. People want to be able to use Google Docs as well as any other installed program, whilst not having to install it.

Menu's for compressed files
Written by Auzy the 17 Apr 08 at 12:25. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
UPDATE: There is a proposed implementation on http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8904/

There should be a way to add menu's to compressed files, containing all the actions an average user would want to perform on the included files.

* So, for source code archives, it may contain "start compiling and install", and "read the README" file.
* For a program, the menu might simply have "install program", "run program", and "uninstall program" actions.
* You could even have a zip full of hundreds of HTML files, and the menu could simply be "Open start.html starting page"

It can be anything the coder wants it to be. And, it can a cross platform standard. As long as the user has a program to read the file for the option (sh files wont work on windows obviously, but all OS's have HTML support).

PLEASE NOTE: it wont auto execute anything, and it can be opt-in, so advanced users can still treat files the same. But it will allow installers to be tar.gz'ed, and newbies don't need to know which file to click to install, they just select from the menu.

Implementation wise, we just need to standardise a menu file, and make a frontend for GTK/QT, which the decompressor activates after decompression if the user wants it enabled.
In fact, the menu file just needs to be something like: Option name|file to execute/open with default view[NEW LINE]. In fact I could have coded this with basic C++ or VB in grade 10..

This idea is a clarified version of idea 5189, because I found most people had difficulty understanding the other one.

No driver notifications
Written by fordplay the 15 Apr 08 at 09:07. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If a users system has hardware that doesn't have a driver installed by ubuntu the system should tell the user, and suggest where to to get the driver.

For example:
This laptops wifi card isn't currently supported by ubuntu by default. You can make it work by using...

This notification should not be annoying and should be cancellable.

Break Ubuntu free from the laws of the USA
Written by sf_007 the 1 Apr 08 at 20:15. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Probably this is going to be controversial but...

The majority of people that are into open source/free software probably don't like very much some of the laws the USA got, DMCA, software patents, lots of power to DRM and not so much power to the users... Microsoft threatening Linux with lawsuits! a "Sue them all!!!" policy that threatens everyone...
Lots of countries in the world have more freedom in the aspect of the "digital things"... and it kinda sucks that every ubuntu user in the world gets a system that (in it's default configuration, of course) can't even play a .mp3 file! not because of technical limitations, but because of laws made by the powerfull people of one or few countries, lobbied by the rich guys and companys...

Why not just relocate ubuntu main servers to a more free country? I don't know were they are now, but Sweden, for example, looks good for this kind of things... so a more “complete package” of ubuntu could be offered (I'm talking about software like libdvdcss, etc... software that is free software but is not included only because the fear of lawsuits) I'm not saying: “Lets be the Pirates of Sealand and live in anarchy!”, but most of us agree that the current laws in USA are a bit...... well... I leave it to you to think about it...

[EDIT] This is not about including proprietary software, it is about including FREE software, but that in the current situation is ILLEGAL (link to PDF with DRM) to use in the USA (or at least "risky" or "in a grey area" of legislation).

(This is not getting into stuff like "My country is better than yours!"... they All have good things and bad things... it is just my humble opinion...)
Peace.

Make the super key bring down Applications menu
Written by ethana2 the 20 Mar 08 at 07:31. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This would reduce confusion. I didn't even think Ubuntu had a key combo for that menu for the longest time. Turns out it's alt+F1. Two keys? Having to span the keyboard with your hand? Fail.

This idea isn't 'windows-like' or 'mac-like'; it's behavior expected from every 'human being' that's used a computer via the keyboard before.

If you have a really good reason to be different, do so. As far as I'm aware, not using super for the Apps menu does not.

...and if you're using super as a modifier, you will have pressed another key before letting up on it. That would be the only potentially sensible opposition I can think of for this. All the people that use alt+F1 now will be grateful, once they figure it out.

lastest stables versions of applications in the repositories
Written by safiel the 20 Mar 08 at 06:40. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
I want regular updates of the lastest versions of the applications should be in the Ubuntu backports repositories.

I know is for the security of the system, but i want for example: new drivers updates, VLC, VirtualBox-OSE, rtorrent, alien, and others applications which long time ago are with last stables versions and in the repositories always are the old versions of them; besides some applications launch its latest version for bugfixing security vulnerabilities and giving more stability of the system

Developer comments
If you want to get new versions, enable -backports. For more information about them see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports.

Bug fixes have to be because of something important (security problem, frequent crashes, data loss, etc) and follow the procedure described on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates.

Make the large evolution tooltip 'you've new mail' clickable
Written by tienm the 11 Mar 08 at 19:02. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

When a new email arrives a nice large tooltip shows up. Making it clickable, would enable me to open the email directly. It would be even nicer if the 'from' name appears as well in the tooltip.

Nautilus should reload after running a nautilus-script
Written by takdavid the 19 Mar 08 at 17:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
After running a nautilus-script (from context menu / Scripts) Nautilus should automatically reload the view, saving us pressing F5, because such a script probably changes something which should be seen. Or at least create an option to switch this behavior on/off.

Include GNOME Do in Ubuntu by default
Written by BlackLukes the 19 Mar 08 at 15:51. Category: Accessibility. Related to: GNOME Do. New
I used Kubuntu for a few months and I liked much an application named "Katapult", a quick application launcher by pressing Alt+space and typing the name of the application. I found GNOME Do, a similar application that works very well.
Katapult is included by default in Kubuntu, why don't we do it with GNOME Do?

Why there are so many things done twice?
Written by dbg the 12 Mar 08 at 16:30. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because the Text is very long here a short summery:
In my opinion it is senseless, that there is so much competition inside of open source. There are many projects which are very similar and I think that cronical and the ubuntu foundation as the developer of one of the most popular Linux distributions should plead for the support of communication between the open source projects to give open source a more efficient structure.
Inside of open source there should be no competition, microsoft is enough, and I think if the open source developers would work more efficient together they can produce a very beautiful Linux desktop in the future.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all I really love the idea of Open Source. It is much simpler to communicate with the developers, submit own ideas(e.g. Brainstorm), or to help active, to form his own desktop. Because of this close relationship to the user, I feel much more involved to this project and feels in duty bound to give something back. So I produced an icon theme and submitted some ideas.
It is great to have the freedom to start something new and that there are possibilitys to find people who helps you, but I also think it would be very helpful for open source to make a new structure for more productivity.

I do not understand why there are done so many things twice or more?
When I would look at Open Source like at a company there are so much things which could be done more efficient.

1.Why so many applications of the same categorie. For example the IDEs. There are many IDEs for different programming languages, but either they are complicated (anjuta), have no standard gui builder (eclipse), or are very unstable (mono on my ubuntu desktop). I think it would be more productive if all this IDE developers would work together to build one simple IDE which includes many programming languages and an easy to use gui builder. I know Kdevelop tries that, but I hate the unclear interface structure of many KDE Applications like Kdevelop. I would prefer something more like mono.
A category which also must be mentioned are media players. I do not try to count all the open source media players because there are to much. On a wikipedia side I found a list with ca. 30 audio and video players, but I think there are much more. I know a small assortment should be there, but company's like microsoft or apple has just one media player, Linux not countable. When the developers of some similar media players would work together it would be much more efficient, and would open up so much new possibilitys for the Linux desktop.

Disable CAPSLOCK-Key!
Written by redd the 12 Mar 08 at 16:31. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The CAPSLOCK-key was really very helpful in the times of mechanical typewriters. But on a PC this key is nothing except annoying. I think everybody knows the problem of acidentALLY HITTING THIS KEY!!!

Ubuntu could solve this easily by disable the function of this Key. Make it to a normal shift key, please!!

(Or even let me change this in "CapsLock key behavior" in gnome-keyboard-properties.)

Here some Weblinks:

When the user pushes the button, eject the CD/DVD
Written by BobPendleton the 1 Mar 08 at 18:20. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu means something like "being human together". So, why does Ubuntu put the wishes of the software ahead of the wishes of a human?

When a human being pushes the button on a CD/DVD drive the drive should immediately eject. The only time it should not eject is when it is being written to and then a message should pop up telling the human what is going on and as soon as the current write operations is completed the drive should eject.

If files on the drive are open by an application then the application should get an EOF error on the next read or write and be expected to take appropriate action.

It is never acceptable for a computer to refuse the direct command from a human.
