I have a Logitech Mx510 mouse.

It has a backwards and a forwards key on the side. In Windows these keys can be used to navigate backward and forward in the browser and file manager.

In Ubuntu these buttons are detected but have no effect in Firefox and Nautilus. Please make these buttons work by default in these applications.

There have been complaints that Ubuntu lacks a disk configuration utility, which forces newbies to manually edit fstab if they want to use a drive that was not present when they installed the system. Manually editing the file is difficult and frustrating to them, and not an ideal way to handle the issue on the long run.

An application exists by the name of Disk Manager, which keeps tracks and notifies of newly added units, and for extremely easy (automagical) configuration. That is the kind of stuff we want in Ubuntu.

I'm bored with dual-screen on GNU/Linux, it really has to have a graphic configuration, and better features.
I would like to move windows from a screen to another, but when I maximize I need it to be in a single screen.

Most of the planet uses the Metric System. So why does the system default to imperial units? Make A4 the default paper size for printing, only two countries don't use it. Most people don't know what inches are so cm or mm should be the default.

For now we have to rely on Samba when mounting network NTFS drives.

It should be very helpfull to have NTFS support for NFS.

Because the Text is very long here a short summery:
In my opinion it is senseless, that there is so much competition inside of open source. There are many projects which are very similar and I think that cronical and the ubuntu foundation as the developer of one of the most popular Linux distributions should plead for the support of communication between the open source projects to give open source a more efficient structure.
Inside of open source there should be no competition, microsoft is enough, and I think if the open source developers would work more efficient together they can produce a very beautiful Linux desktop in the future.

First of all I really love the idea of Open Source. It is much simpler to communicate with the developers, submit own ideas(e.g. Brainstorm), or to help active, to form his own desktop. Because of this close relationship to the user, I feel much more involved to this project and feels in duty bound to give something back. So I produced an icon theme and submitted some ideas.
It is great to have the freedom to start something new and that there are possibilitys to find people who helps you, but I also think it would be very helpful for open source to make a new structure for more productivity.

I do not understand why there are done so many things twice or more?
When I would look at Open Source like at a company there are so much things which could be done more efficient.

1.Why so many applications of the same categorie. For example the IDEs. There are many IDEs for different programming languages, but either they are complicated (anjuta), have no standard gui builder (eclipse), or are very unstable (mono on my ubuntu desktop). I think it would be more productive if all this IDE developers would work together to build one simple IDE which includes many programming languages and an easy to use gui builder. I know Kdevelop tries that, but I hate the unclear interface structure of many KDE Applications like Kdevelop. I would prefer something more like mono.
A category which also must be mentioned are media players. I do not try to count all the open source media players because there are to much. On a wikipedia side I found a list with ca. 30 audio and video players, but I think there are much more. I know a small assortment should be there, but company's like microsoft or apple has just one media player, Linux not countable. When the developers of some similar media players would work together it would be much more efficient, and would open up so much new possibilitys for the Linux desktop.

The Ubutnu is a popular distribution, and the choice of their standard theme should be made by all by voting. And not by a small group. The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.


For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

a lot of times, text is not copied. even if i cut, the selected text disapears in firefox and isn't pasteable in pidgin. sometimes the clipboard is an older version, if i paste.

Enough with the OSX style swirls. From now on lets have a striking image FOR EVERY RELEASE. The current 8.04 wallpaper is just so much more stylish and rememberable than generic swirls.

My suggestion would be to make each wallpaper tie in with the animal name. Like there were some pretty cool Gibson graphics being used on tshirts and the like but why couldn't they have been used as part of the wallpaper? They would have been just as striking as the new Heron one.

I think there is perhaps a side benefit to using the animal name as every graphical designer gets 8 months heads up on the next name and hence the next theme of the graphic, so there should be no reason why come release time you wont have a bunch of cool graphics to choose from.

Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.

So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.

I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".

I want regular updates of the lastest versions of the applications should be in the Ubuntu backports repositories.

I know is for the security of the system, but i want for example: new drivers updates, VLC, VirtualBox-OSE, rtorrent, alien, and others applications which long time ago are with last stables versions and in the repositories always are the old versions of them; besides some applications launch its latest version for bugfixing security vulnerabilities and giving more stability of the system

You make the graphics and the theme designer tool would
do all the un-fun stuff with config files and the like.

For instance, if you plug in a USB device that is malfunctioning or not detected correctly, errors will be generated in the System Log, but nothing at all will happen in GNOME. Things like this should generate friendly graphical error balloons so that people at least recognize that something's gone wrong, instead of just thinking the device was not even recognized.

As braaivleis points out, it doesn't have to actually pop up the balloon; it can be like the updates icon that appears, but only shows a balloon when you click on it.

Probably this is going to be controversial but...

The majority of people that are into open source/free software probably don't like very much some of the laws the USA got, DMCA, software patents, lots of power to DRM and not so much power to the users... Microsoft threatening Linux with lawsuits! a "Sue them all!!!" policy that threatens everyone...
Lots of countries in the world have more freedom in the aspect of the "digital things"... and it kinda sucks that every ubuntu user in the world gets a system that (in it's default configuration, of course) can't even play a .mp3 file! not because of technical limitations, but because of laws made by the powerfull people of one or few countries, lobbied by the rich guys and companys...

Why not just relocate ubuntu main servers to a more free country? I don't know were they are now, but Sweden, for example, looks good for this kind of things... so a more “complete package” of ubuntu could be offered (I'm talking about software like libdvdcss, etc... software that is free software but is not included only because the fear of lawsuits) I'm not saying: “Lets be the Pirates of Sealand and live in anarchy!”, but most of us agree that the current laws in USA are a bit...... well... I leave it to you to think about it...

[EDIT] This is not about including proprietary software, it is about including FREE software, but that in the current situation is ILLEGAL (link to PDF with DRM) to use in the USA (or at least "risky" or "in a grey area" of legislation).

(This is not getting into stuff like "My country is better than yours!"... they All have good things and bad things... it is just my humble opinion...)

The biggest problem on Linux is the lack of drivers for much hardware, especially for niche hardware.

I suggest creating an application that lets users voluntarily send in the types of hardware they use where no (or just an incomplete) driver exists.
The data should be collected centrally and should be sent to the hardware vendors out there. (In form of an quarterly letter, or so.)

That would serve two goals:

1. Hardware vendors would see how many people actually use their products on Linux, which would help the software departments get the money they need to develop Linux drivers.

2. OSS developers would be able to see which hardware products needs better drivers.

1. add a filter bar (similar to finder/ explorer)
2. add tab support (optional)
3. convert the zoom button to a slider, move to buttom left
4. move view mode to the left of the slider, convert to buttons.
5. add "eject" button next to removable media.

Add an "uninstall this application" option to the context menu when right clicking some applications icon in the applications menu. This would then open a "These packages will be uninstalled" -dialog.

every year google conducts summer camp for students to see there potential and rewards best.ubuntu should participate in such events and should be social aware,spread,mentor.put link to participation's etc.

This would reduce confusion. I didn't even think Ubuntu had a key combo for that menu for the longest time. Turns out it's alt+F1. Two keys? Having to span the keyboard with your hand? Fail.

This idea isn't 'windows-like' or 'mac-like'; it's behavior expected from every 'human being' that's used a computer via the keyboard before.

If you have a really good reason to be different, do so. As far as I'm aware, not using super for the Apps menu does not.

...and if you're using super as a modifier, you will have pressed another key before letting up on it. That would be the only potentially sensible opposition I can think of for this. All the people that use alt+F1 now will be grateful, once they figure it out.
