Web Control Panel (For Ubuntu Server Edition)
Written by RichM the 13 May 08 at 02:03. Category: Server. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I believe more could be done to the server edition to make it more user friendly and to improve its image/acceptance as a server operating system.

Idea:

I think it would be a good idea to create and implement a web interface control panel for Ubuntu. The control panel would have the same objectives as Plesk, or cPanel, thus making the whole experience more user friendly.

It could contain a number of features, such as:

- Add/edit/delete a hosting account (with user account/domain etc)
- Control panel for users as well
- Reboot server & services
- Edit DNS zones
- Server status (loads)
- Bandwidth usage reports
- Add/edit/delete MySQL databases
- And all of the other essential features found in control panels such as Plesk and cPanel

If Ubuntu server edition could implement something like this "out of the box" it would also give Ubuntu server edition a better image and may create a wider acceptance for its use as a server operating system.

Also, many popular web control panels (Such as cPanel) don't officially support Ubuntu. So I think this makes my suggestion even more important.

I realise that I could have gone into more depth when adding suggestions for features, but I thought I'd keep it as short as possible so that it's easy to read.

Remote file system should act like a local one
Written by Bromskloss the 30 Mar 08 at 15:42. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Normally, if I have access to some files, my home directory for example, all applications I run also get that access (unless I run them in some jail).

This does not happen when working with remote files ("Places" > "Connect to server..."). Then each application needs to explicitly be given access to each server it wants to use files on. It would be better if remote parts of the file system worked identically to local ones. Just like with sshfs.

Network Manager must have Wireless Refresh (Or Search button)
Written by Kosimo the 10 May 08 at 13:16. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When a new wireless network is activated, the only way to see it in network manager is waiting 'till the system find it... Why not adding a simple (refresh) button to make a new search and find all Wireless Networks?

Implement Kinetic Scrolling
Written by rouge568 the 11 May 08 at 17:52. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Made popular by Apple, kinetic scrolling is a much more intuitive interface for navigating pages. Not only making touch-screens more interactive, the "real" feel of a kinetic scroll provides a more natural grasp of what is being done. It is easier to control and predict, and streamlines the work process. In addition, it's fun to look at. Ubuntu would benefit from this both through an asthetic boost and by providing an interface that is truly "for human beings".

Note: there would be an option to revert to the normal way.
