Blu-Ray Support

Support for media formats should no longer be an optional part of any Linux distribution. We need full support for Blu-Ray playback and it should be implemented in FOSS. I don't want to rely on commercially licensed tools for media playback.

Convince Adobe to host a .deb of flashplugin-nonfree on its website

Ubuntu has this wonderful UbuFox integration that prompts you to install missing plugins via the package manager when you visit a webpage that requires Flash.
But YouTube (and some other sites) will tell you you're missing Flash and then link you to the Adobe Flash download webpage, which has a .tar.gz and an .rpm but no .deb download.
Since we already have .deb files for flashplugin-nonfree in the repositories, would it be difficult for Ubuntu/Canonical to convince Adobe to host it alongside the other download options?

Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE
|
|
Written by strattonbrazil the 14 Jul 08 at 22:28. Category: System.
Related to: Gnome.
New

gnome-system-monitor provides a cleaner interface than Windows "Task Manager", and provides many useful features including list of processes running, memory and network usage, etc.
This functionality should be more accessible by key binding it by default to CTRL-ALT-DELETE as Windows does--as this is more familiar to users coming from Windows. The current key binding for CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up the shutdown/logout options, which is already accessible as a desktop button, which is redundant for a relatively less used function.
gnome-system-monitor is an idle interface for monitoring the system and killing processes without using the terminal and provides an interface for doing this that most are already familiar with. Changing it's key binding would make it's functionality much more accessible.

adobe flash has become ridiculously slow. it's perverse that i can play a dvd in full screen mode and that uses about 5% of my processor, while as a small flash window on youtube stutters. as well as this, there is of course no 64-bit version, or a version for sparc/powerpc under linux.
the solution is obvious--gnash must be developed. could canonical/ubuntu invest some development time in getting gnash working well? that would be great :)

Remember state of Numlock on system shutdown

I suggest remembering the state of the numlock key when the computer is shutdown, and on startup, restoring it to the same state. This fixes everyones problems with the num lock.
PROS:
* Does not need any GUI changes.
* You can disable the behavior by disabling the service
* Doesn't require a daemon. Just a small shutdown/start script
* Most users want the same state as when they last shut down
* Does not potentially screw up laptop keyboards or other foreign keyboards like most other suggestions. All users are advantaged
* Very easy to code. No patches needed to be made against upstream code.
* Could also be executed per user, on login/logout, but it is more complex then.
CONS:
* May be a bit confusing to multi-user system users. But its really no worse behavior then now.
NOT A DUPE!!!
Please note, this is not a dupe. The other ideas involve a default state. This is a better way of approaching it.

In "Appearance", you can click on the "Customize..." button.
There in the "Controls" tab you can select "Redmond".
But in "Window Border" there is no "Redmond" setting. :(
I propose to add a "Redmond" Window Border, to go along with the "Redmond" Controls.

Run web browsers in a sandbox

Run web browsers (such as Mozilla Firefox, Epiphany, etc) in a secure sandbox.
So that it has no access to the rest of the operating system or file system, except the cache folder.
So it cannot gain write access to files and registry keys outside of a user profile's folder.
This will prevent exploits and security vulnerabilities in the web browser (or its plugins and extensions) from being exploited to install malware on the computer.

When you encounter a plugin in Firefox that needs to be installed, Ubufox prompts the user with a dialog saying "Click here to download plugin". When you select Adobe Flash Player, it says "Cannot find package flashplugin-nonfree" when multiverse is not enabled.
This is extremely user-unfriendly and should be easy to fix. However, it hasn't been, while it's been around since Gutsy.

Pidgin and Evolution contact sync

Now we can sync evolution with pidgin but seems to be only one way and how it synchronizes is a bit messy.
The name synced is the "full name". Well if for example if I have a user "Mr. Steve Jobs", the contact in pidgin must be "Mr. Steve Jobs". I would like the name of the contact is the name of "File under" or better "Nickname"
The more, I would like, that like in pidgin, different messenger addresses for the same user are stored in the corresponding fields of the evolution contact.
The synchronization must be more intelligent, this means first check by addresses if not found in any contact, create a new contact. If found and not set, set the nickname. If nickname is set but differs from the name in pidgin, update nickname in evolution (cause I think the names in pidgin are more up-to-date).
The sync form evolution to pidging must first check all the messenger addresses and then see if exists in pidgin. If is not so, add the missing messenger address to pdgin under the corresponding nickname (or a new one if don't exists in pidgin).
The fields in Evolution should be have the possibility to add Skype addresses (since there exists an plugin for evolution)

Give Nautilus more love! (idea examples)

Nautilus does its job as a light file manager. However, as Gnome's default file manager, I think it could use a lot more love than what it is given. This could include:
- Tabbed browsing! Most browsers today support tabbed browsing, but still few file managers. This doesn't really make sense now does it?
- Better remote connection/sftp handling. The current one is AWFUL. Slow, sluggish, buggy. Take example on Konqueror!
- SVN integration has been waved at. I find it a cool idea, even if only as a plugin.
- Speaking of plugins... those also need some love. How many plugins are there for Nautilus? Most users don't even know Nautilus can be enhanced.
- File tooltips - once again, take example on Konqueror / Windows explorer.
Edit: A few more ideas around Brainstorm:
- Separation of files and folders
- Slider bar for zoom
- A better icon management
- The ability to explode folders
Those are just a handful of ideas. My main concern is Nautilus is being underdeveloped, and the solid alternative is only non-Gnome (Konqueror).
If you liked this idea, check out my other ideas.

Promote Edubuntu in K-12 Schools
|
|
Written by tromboneman the 27 Mar 08 at 13:25. Category: Marketing.
Related to: Edubuntu.
New
|
|
BACKGROUND:
Schools should be the first place any operating system company/community promotes their operating system. Microsoft figured this out a long time ago. They practically gave away copies of Windows to K-12 schools. Schools said, "It is almost free of cost. That is all that matters to us." The students that used these Windows computers grew up, and had to buy a computer. Windows is what they learned on, so it is what they purchased and used.
WHAT DO WE NEED:
What we need to do (as an Edubuntu community) is to set up a site similar to the abandoned Schoolforge.net designed as a meeting place for everything regarding Edubuntu and Free/Open Source Software in schools. It would provide reasons other than cost as to why schools should switch to Edubuntu and Free/Open Source Software, as well as resources for anyone who wanted to get involved.
WHY US:
Edubuntu is by far the greatest educational GNU/Linux distro on the planet. It is our job to show off this amazing distro. On the Edubuntu site, there is no information whatsoever on the advantages of using it over Windows or Mac. Ubuntu already has a huge community backing it, making it the perfect candidate to start something like this.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
If we want to instill the values of openness in students, promote the use of Ubuntu around the world, and create the GNU generation, we need to make a site serving as a hub for educators and those promoting the use of Edubuntu in schools.

The only thing that stops people I know from using a single Ubuntu install is Ubuntu being incapable of running an HD movie on a proper framerate. Mplayer seems to be running something near smooth but it's not great.
Totem should have more capabilities for HD movies.

Fix Compiz in 8.04 on HP laptops

I have several HP laptops and one of those had 7.10 installed and I was able to use compiz. After installing 8.04 beta compiz is no longer working.
Again, on 7.10 it worked. On 8.04 it does not.
The error when I do a compiz --replace is:
Checking for Xgl: not present
Found laptop using ati driver
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
I can't figure out for the life of me why Canonical disabled this. This needs to be addressed before the 8.04 for fear that, with the massive number of bugs in Ubuntu that this will become forgotten. Forgotten just like the fact that using the auto login feature causes the sound engines to set the system in overload with near 100% constant cpu utilization, or that the wireless on most HP presario class notebooks from 2-3 years ago just refuses to work, no matter what, even with ndiswrapper.
So, before these laptop issues become lost forever, please address these new bugs you have are introducing.
It would be a great idea to not disable working features.
