Integrate prefetch into Ubuntu

In todays computer systems the main bottleneck is not CPU but disk access which is several orders of magnitude slower than CPU and memory. In such circumstances the way to improve application performance is to prefetch data it needs from disk before it even requests it and it is the point of prefetching techniques. This speeds up boot and decreases the time needed to start programs. This replaces and it is faster than the currently used readahead.

Sound "Themes"
Written by JYC the 7 Mar 08 at 04:24. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
To set your system sounds, you need to go to "System" -> "Preferences" -> "Sounds" and set all of them manually. How about a universal sound "theme"?

Gdebi improvement
Written by francois the 8 Mar 08 at 16:23. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
If I want to manually install several packages with Gdebi, I would select them all and press enter (or right click->open with gdebi) And gdebi should open only one instance and queue the packages selected in order to install them in the good order (resolve dependencies between them) just like if I did
dpkg -i package1.deb package1-data.deb package2.deb or *.deb

If I am installing a package and I want to install anoter one, it should appear in the queue of the existing instance of gdebi.

Tease programming on Ubuntu
Written by Ikipou the 12 Mar 08 at 11:12. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Linux offer great tools to develop software, but there is little effort to promote them to beginners.

If you look at the competitors, they offer unified development platform and associated documentation. Have a look at XCode+developerConnection and VisualStudio+MSDN, this is ideal infrastructure to get new programmers.

It would be nice to have a dedicated website to inform people about the development on Ubuntu. The website could help people to make their first software, help them to begin with the main IDEs, and give links to get further information on the official website of the language/IDE/framework.

Such a website should be very appealing and simple to help the beginners. Help in lot of language would be a plus since lots of people don't speak English.

More developers means more people to implement the idea of Ubuntu Brainstorm :)

While I think that it is a great idea, it's not something we in Canonical should put resources to, at least not now. This is a great community task!

Add Usability/Interaction design Category in ubuntu brainstorm
Written by LucaCappelletti the 10 Mar 08 at 14:40. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Usability adn Interaction design are well know categories that are thread and handle spcifically into every main OS vendor like Microsoft, Apple, Symbian and so on.
So seems important to take into account.
So I propose to integrate a new Category labeled Interaction Design that include also usability and Accessibility.

Remove Yahoo search engine from Firefox quicksearch (it spies on users)

Mozilla Firefox comes with search engines by default.

In Google, when you search for something, and it lists the links it find, and you click on the links, you get directly to the links.
In Yahoo, when you search for something, and it lists the links it finds, when you click on the links, it redirects you to them through themself, hence spying on their users.

Example, instead of linking directly to http://www.linux.com/ they link to;
* http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkxY36.NHOFUA1vBXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzcnVyMjkyBHNlYwN zcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA0gwODVfMTI1/SIG=119t26bpi/EXP=1206205623/**http%3a //www.linux.com/

Yahoo has been criticized for their adware and spyware;
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo#Adware_and_Spyware

They also helped the Chinese government by giving up data, resulting in the imprisonment of Chinese political dissidents.
Shi Tao, a journalist working for a Chinese newspaper, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo#Work_in_China

We should keep Google, Wikipedia and Creative Commons. Google is our strong ally.
However, Yahoo and eBay never did shit for us, why should we help them out?

Make Brainstorm link prominent on the Ubuntu website
Written by belovedmonster the 29 Feb 08 at 10:03. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Ubuntu home page makes no mention of brainstorm. The news on the home page doesn't even mention this site launching. Clicking on Community/Get Involved brings up a page which makes absolutely no mention of brainstorm!!

HOW ARE PEOPLE GOING TO KNOW THIS EXCELLENT SITE EXISTS?

Please make it easy for people to find their way here.

Why you aren't shouting from the roof tops on your home page about this new feature I do not know!

downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads. XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to "$HOME/Downloads" instead of "$HOME/Desktop" in the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs.

This Downloads folder should be the default download location for firefox and this folder should be bookmarked in nautilus by xdg-user-dirs-gtk (like Music,Videos,Pictures and Documents).

RATIONALE :
* less cluttered desktop and/or homedir
* still easy to access your downloads

Remember state of Numlock on system shutdown

I suggest remembering the state of the numlock key when the computer is shutdown, and on startup, restoring it to the same state. This fixes everyones problems with the num lock.

PROS:
* Does not need any GUI changes.
* You can disable the behavior by disabling the service
* Doesn't require a daemon. Just a small shutdown/start script
* Most users want the same state as when they last shut down
* Does not potentially screw up laptop keyboards or other foreign keyboards like most other suggestions. All users are advantaged
* Very easy to code. No patches needed to be made against upstream code.
* Could also be executed per user, on login/logout, but it is more complex then.

CONS:
* May be a bit confusing to multi-user system users. But its really no worse behavior then now.

NOT A DUPE!!!
Please note, this is not a dupe. The other ideas involve a default state. This is a better way of approaching it.
