Default application locations
Written by caryb the 29 Feb 08 at 04:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
How many times have you clicked an application to find *buntu doesn't know what to do with it? what happens next is real handy, it drops you to your home folder to pick a application! This works for us seasoned Linux folks but wat about the poor newbies? I was thinking that the /usr/bin folder would make more sense but then what do they pick? perhaps a data file with possible applications for tasks that could be upgraded when needed? If the application is not install perhaps a gui link to synaptic or adept etc to install the offending problem?

Install package gnome-vfs-obexftp by default
Written by someonestolemyname the 29 Feb 08 at 05:00. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The package gnome-vfs-obexftp is not installed by default. It provides support for Nautilus to browse bluetooth devices, such as bluetooth-enabled phones.

This functionality usually works perfectly after it is installed, so I don't see why it isn't by default. Otherwise, much of bluetooth's usefulness is gone.

The package is all of 164kb, so space is not an issue that I can think of.

See here for more info:

Keyring should be a great password manager
Written by HDave the 29 Feb 08 at 05:03. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu's keyring facility is nice, but is a far cry from a real password manager. While there are several password manager's in the repository, none of them are very good and none of them are integrated into the keyring. Of the bunch, probably KeePassX is the best.

Seahorse, which is the (optionally installed) GUI to the keyring is good at storing keys, but doesn't handle web site passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

Ubuntu needs a highly secure all-in-one password/key/private note manager. Ideally it would be integrated into Firefox and Thunderbird such that those systems would work with the keyring.

Block JoseGosdin in the .htaccess file.

Seriously. This shows you how scared people are of Linux rising in popularity. When someone resorts to vandalizing a website, they have to be pretty upset.

Add a prominent link to UBUNTUFORUMS.ORG to the Firefox bookmarks TOOLBAR
Written by BobCFC the 29 Feb 08 at 06:06. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The forums are one of the most valuable resources in the Ubuntu community and we should make it as easy as possible for new users to find them. If you are coming from the windows world it may not even occur to you to look for a forum.

I am aware of the bookmarks to the Cannonical support pages which lead to the forums, but this level of indirection does not give enough credit to the value of the forums.

There should be a link next to the BBC News feed on the default Firefox bookmarks toolbar.

PCLinuxOS has several links on their toolbar including the forum and a site similar to gnome-look.org. I was impressed by this - it felt integrated and helps to draw beginners into the community.

There is a similar precedent; when you start xchat it defaults to opening the #ubuntu channel.

TabletPC Package or edition
Written by fredro the 29 Feb 08 at 06:19. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Have a tabletpc edition or install package that will have support for all of the latest tabletpc drivers and include journal software like OneNote in one package.

Also, the handwrite input palette should be included as well as support for easy rotation.

Disable Terminal Server Client's Auto-Reconnect Option
Written by supermike the 29 Feb 08 at 06:40. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
By default, Terminal Server client auto-reconnects when I click the X. At home, I don't logout of my terminal servers because I need to disconnect and reconnect to them all day as I test my websites against Windows workstations. The auto-reconnect option is extremely annoying and is a relatively new feature that used to not exist with previously with tsclient.

Cut power to the screen when laptop lid is closed.
Written by zdenik the 29 Feb 08 at 07:05. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On the power management preferences screen it would be nice if the "Blank screen" option actually put the screen to sleep (turn the back-light off).

When I close the lid on my laptop I see no reason for the back-light to stay on. And, for me, having the screen turn off when I close the lid is preferable to putting the laptop into standy or hybernate.

Make visual system beep default, not loud system beep!
Written by sketec the 29 Feb 08 at 07:11. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I find the system beep annoying and always disable it. I'm sure there are plenty who agree, so make visual system beep default, not loud system beep!

Introduce SMP support into the kernel by default, like CentOS
Written by sudipta the 29 Feb 08 at 07:40. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Most of the laptops and desktops today come with dual core or quad core processors. It will be cool if we get the default installer to put in an SMP-enabled kernel rather than the user having to manually go and do it. Guess what, this will also boost the performance of these machines!

Ubuntu Credit Card (like Linux Fund)   forum

I would be proud to have an ubuntu credit and or debit card, and let canonical keep the profit from fee's etc.

It seems to be a viable idea for making profit for canonical.

Include IPBlock (PeerGuardian) The Graphical Alternative to MOBLOCK   forum
Written by maynoth the 29 Feb 08 at 07:57. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
IPBlock is part of IPlist which is available on sourceforge, and works great in gutsy and feisty...

It is every bit as stable and functional as PeerGuardian for windows.

Make Ubuntu's default theme as cool as XP and Mac OS
Written by IamSuperhero the 29 Feb 08 at 08:06. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Have different modes of install. Normal - as is current, Easy and Cool - The coolest but maybe not the fastest theme and all the cool apps. With 3D acceleration enabled etc.

bug
Written by dragonx the 28 Feb 08 at 17:30. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In many cases, I can't configure my webcam or I have problems with the microphone. Now I can use my webcam but only with V4L2 and only 3 programas detect my webcam. It's a good idea can use my webcam in all programs as camorama.

Developer comments
That's pure driver issue in the first place. A big plus is to recommend UVC-based webcams to users, since it takes a lot of work off the shoulders of driver-developers. On the
integration-side proper support for v4l/v4l2 in webcam-related applications needs to be solidified. The ideal application to polish up is cheese of course.
