Ubuntu should come with video editing software which can edit videos and record movies with a shortcut (nice for guides and help videos).

Closing programs via Window List before they've started

|

The idea is to be able to close a program, WHILE it is still loading, by right clicking on it in Gnome toolbar (Window List applet) and selecting "Close".
This is useful when you accidentally run a program that takes a lot of time and CPU to load. In MacOSX you are able to close it before it is loaded. This should be possible in Linux too.
Suggested solution: Right clicking on the loading program and selecting "Close" should get the PID of that program and kill it.

I want 4 billion themes available where to choose from

Well, maybe not 4 billion, but what about 20?
Ubuntu comes with 6 or 7 themes available, but probably only 3 are really useful.
Users want to customize their environment. I have seen partial themes on many websites, but I have not been able to download *full* themes from anywhere. If they can not come preinstalled, maybe it would be possible to provide them easily (a couple of clicks). Or maybe provide an extra package to download, that would contain 10 extra themes... I dont' know.
In short I want *my* laptop to look different from Mary's, because mine will look really cool!

Have Transmission use emblems on folders to show you the state of a download

It would be very helpful to, well... myself and I'm sure other people if Transmission would set emblems on folders or files based on what they're doing. It could set one emblem when the download starts and one when it's completed so you know when it's safe to relocate the folder or file without having to go back and forth from Transmission.
The most useful thing about this is it doesn't depend on Transmission to be running to keep you informed on the status of the file, you wouldn't have to open transmission to see if that file you just started downloading and forgot about was done or not.

Nautilus Bookmarks sidepane should have "bubble" effect during drag-n-drop.

When I'm cleaning up a folder I tend to use the Bookmarks sidepane to help my cleanup go faster. I take files and drag them to the bookmark folder where they should go. But it is really very sensitive, and it is just as easy to create a NEW bookmark as it is to move the file.
I suggest that the sidepanel "bubbles" or magnifies the Bookmarks closest around the cursor so it is easier to be sure you are putting something where it goes.
This idea is small and petty and will probably die a horrible death. But I though it might be a nice touch, and I haven't made very many Look & Feel suggestions.

Dead easy website creation

There is a need for a dead easy website creation program.
Nowadays everyone has to have his or her own website, but only few people are willing to learn to code to get one. On the forums, people ask for a program to build websites without the need for a brain.
There should be a template driven website builder with the possibility to easily add a blog page, photo gallery, downloads page, contact forms, automatically build menu.... without having to know a single line of html, css, JavaScript or php.
It should have the basic features to build a website and only these basic features. There are other (great) alternatives for more advanced web designers, but this could be useful for them too 'cause it's so easy and fast to add stuff to the website.
The way I see it, people would be able to make templates and upload them to the project's site. There could be competitions for the templates included in the program itself,... but I'm thinking to far now.
As far as I know, Windows doesn't have this either. So this could be a huge advantage for Ubuntu and Linux in general.
I don't like comparing, but for OSX there's the popular Rapidweaver ( http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/ ) that does want I just described.
For the record, I do know that this isn't really an Ubuntu issue. But still... it's an idea, right?
Thanks for reading!

Having login sound is nice, but sometimes we boot our laptop during the lecture or a meeting and we want it to be absolutely quiet.
There should be a volume control or just a "mute" button in GDM Login window.

When a new email arrives a nice large tooltip shows up. Making it clickable, would enable me to open the email directly. It would be even nicer if the 'from' name appears as well in the tooltip.

READ IT ALL OR DONT VOTE: Have ideas removed when they reach -10 votes.

As well as have a category on the side panel where you can see ideas that are about to die.
This will give unpopular ideas a last chance to be seen before being removed altogether.
Putting the number at -10 makes it so that a slightly negative number won't hurt it and it has a chance to come back.
When ideas are at -7 they should be put on the "about to die" list and people can either save them from dying or push them on over the edge.
This is a great way for the community to get rid of spam posts too.
Ideas that are already below -10 at time of implementation should be artificially bumped up to -7 so they get a fair shake before taking the plunge into deletion.
Some ideas might be able to make better impressions if they are written better. Deleting them will free up others to re-submit the idea without being discouraged by a similar but poorly written post.
Dead ideas should be visible to the original poster, but invisible to others.

I used Kubuntu for a few months and I liked much an application named "Katapult", a quick application launcher by pressing Alt+space and typing the name of the application. I found GNOME Do, a similar application that works very well.
Katapult is included by default in Kubuntu, why don't we do it with GNOME Do?

Compiz shift-switcher needs high resolution icons

The shift-switcher plugin shows large ugly icons for minimized windows. It would help Ubuntu feel more polished if these were higher resolution. I've seen something like shift switcher on a Mac before and the icons looked really nice, so I suppose that it would be possible when the icon theme includes large icons. Many icon sets have high resolutions, but shift-switcher doesn't take advantage of them.
Here is a screenshot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9547627@N06/2331385005/
UPDATE: some people feel that it would be better to just always show a window. Either way would be an improvement.

Rythmbox lyrics search

Currently rythmbox can be extended with a plugin that can display the lyrics from the song you are listening to.
Often I want to hear a song from my collection, but I can't remember from which artist it is or what the song is called. In those cases I can however remember a part of the lyrics.
Therefore I propose an extension to the plugin (or a new plugin) which makes it possible to search for songs based on the lyrics of the song.
I haven't used that many music managers, but as far as I know, this would be a very unique feature to have.

Entering my account shal also unlock NetworkManager key wallet

Personally, I'm bored to enter my password again after entering a session just to unlock my NM key wallet.
There are a lot of solution to implement this use case:
- remove the protection of the key wallet
- implement a single sign-on service to reuse the user password to lock/unlock the key wallet
This can also be tuned with an option ("Automatic key wallet unlock") in gconf or wherever...
But one password shall really make the system usable !

Hiding the toolbar while its not needed would make the windows look very clean and simplified, sorry to bring Vista up but i think that they had a good idea about pressing Alt key to bring the menu bar up and keep it hidden when its not needed. It should be at least able hide it with a button like kde's 4 hide/show menubar button. PD: Im talking about the file, edit, tools,... toolbar, this idea doesnt have anything to do with the panels... If you dont like vista well, compare it to mac os X, compare nautilus with finder and see which one seems to be more clean and simple.
