I am trying at OpenOffice 3 rc4 right now and asked a friend to send me a .docx file in order to check if it worked.

The file is 15.9kb and only appear a big ink splash. I searched on internet to see if someone could make it work on any linux distro and looks like they haven't.

I suggest to create a special package for read and write .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files since the OO3 fails on that.

And don't start with "IS YOUR FAULT" dance since I download and install the packages and they didn't worked.

If you don't believe me then here is http://rapidshare.com/files/153511617/diagramas_4.docx.html the file, just 15.9kb of epic fail.

I mean, come on people! The only reason Ubuntu lags behind Mac and Windows is because Macs and Windows can execute .exes! Linux couldn't use .exes, but Linux was used in 1980, when .exes weren't so common. I know Ubuntu is based on Linux, but it should have a way to execute .exes (and not emulating them like wine, witch by the way seriously sucks). Lets face it: .exe files are the most common way programmers use to create files. That is the only way Ubuntu can compete against Windows and Mac!
Try it and see! I think this might be an acceptable default, or at least some kind of option during install ("which of these sample boxes is readable to you?"). I, for one, wish I would have thought to do this a long time ago, as it's like having a bigger monitor.
I think that the forced shutdown (5 seconds holding power button) should not be disabled, but I would expect that the safe shutdown should be refused when the screen is locked.
Please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/203113 for history.

I am shocked at the Intrepid beta as I saw - what I thought to be - a blatant digression with the wallpaper and the login/logout sounds from Hardy to Intrepid.

I see for the sounds they made the packaging more freedesktop-friendly, but it still doesn't mean I like it.

Hardy
wall: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/hardy.png
login: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/hardy-login.wav
logout: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/hardy-logout.wav

Intrepid
wall: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid.png
login: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid-login.ogg
logout: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid-logout.ogg

(Feel free to use the links (temporarily) for your blogs. For the wallpapers, see ubuntu-wallpapers or /usr/share/wallapapers. For the sounds, see ubuntu-sounds /usr/share/sounds)

I personally - as a computer nerd - don't care much about the default wallpaper in an operating system as I know it can be changed, but first impressions mean a lot to others. It does mean a lot to me, however, as someone who is in marketing and who has been trained in design for a number of years.

When I speak with my sisters, my father, my mother, my neighbours, my (non-nerdy) co-workers, designers and other general populace, they all thoroughly enjoy the Hardy background but are not impressed with the wallpapers I show from Warty to Gutsy (previous version of Ubuntu).

I feel that Hardy set a new standard for Ubuntu but that the new theme for Intrepid (wallpaper and sounds) are a regression to previous versions of Ubuntu (even though they at least had the better sound sample).

A better default - as a quick and temporary fix - would be the orange marigold photo with a soft focus roll, included in gnome-backgrounds: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/FreshFlower.jpg

I like brown and know it can be used quite tastefully and eloquently, but the vibrant orange and reds in the Hardy wallpaper were a step above any default wallpaper used previously.

A supporting article: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Njc1NA

Testing PPA for sounds: https://launchpad.net/~kwwii/+archive [Kenneth Wimer]

[1] Add an option to enable Apt-P2P in Ubuntu

First off: This is NOT a duplicate of idea 7792. Apt-P2P uses similar meathods to bittorrent in the downloading from peers, but is not based on it in any way.

Anyway, I suggest that there be an option in Software Sources to be able to use apt-p2p instead of the normal apt protocol to download packages. Apt-P2P basically adds localhost:9977/ in front of the repo, so that it would look like "deb http://localhost:9977/path.to/repo" in your sources.list instead of "deb http://path.to/repo". This allows you to download from peers when available, but if no peers are available for a specific package, it downloads from the repository as normal. Once you have downloaded a package and it is in your cache, though, then apt-p2p would share it with others.

The uses for this would be that it would take a load off of the servers. Every year around the time a new version of Ubuntu is released, Ubuntu's servers are pushed to the breaking point when everyone is trying to upgrade. With this, that can be cut to a minimum for those who choose to use it. Since some ISPs set limits on your internet usage and this can raise it up, enabling it by default would be a mistake (just like having new ISO downloads be bittorrent by default would be a mistake).
