Negative ideas in gray
Written by paul21 the 3 Jul 08 at 22:46. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Negative ideas should be shown in gray color.

It could be a good way to deal with "trash" and make brainstorm site cleaner and easier to read.

An intermediate solution could be turning the idea gray when it has too many negative votes (let's say -100).

Usability is inversely proportional to the number of USER clicks for the desired
Written by known the 1 Jul 08 at 21:11. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

How many mouse clicks you need to find out the CPU type of your laptop?
In XP it is 3
In Ubuntu it is 4

You will find a rational and coherent discussion on this topic at http://digg.com/microsoft/Why_I_Still_Use_Windows_Despite_the_Peer_Pressure?t=1 6396532#c16404645

I request Ubuntu team to prioritize the USER desired features and Profile the number of mouse clicks required for those features.

Name for 9.04..... Jazzy Jackal
Written by animaniac the 1 Jul 08 at 19:33. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Jay as suggested somewhere is not African.

Jackal seems to be the only good name if we want to keep it to the African theme without resorting to Jackass.

Also the fact that Anubis (Egyptian god of embalming) had the head of a Jackal, makes it suitable for an LTS.

And what kind of a jackal should it be then?
Jolly, Joyful- too cheesy.
Jogging, Jumping- dose not fit the naming scheme too well.
Jazzy- basically a synonym for fancy or lively, and as a whole it sounds rather sophisticated.

Rope in some celebrity to promote/endorse ubuntu
Written by dragoninsane the 27 Jun 08 at 11:17. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
celebrities are often seen role model, people generally buy the
products that they endorse like gucci,d&g,perfumes and merchandise etc.from home goods to magazines etc they advertise everything.
advantages of hiring a celeb to promote
*-promote ubuntu (also helps promote gnome, kde, linux)
*-promote canonical and its other products, even promote ubuntu
merchandise
choosing a celebrity is too difficult because he/she should support and understand what is
linux philosophy,free software
open source and gpl
ubuntu principle too "linux for human beings".
obama too supports open source.but its upto ubuntu whom to choose, make campaigns and advertisements.tv,newspaper, magazine etc

Use the National Security Agency's kernel
Written by nazgand the 8 May 08 at 22:09. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that Ubuntu should use NSA's linux kernel by default, because it is far more secure than the normal kernel version.

Brainstorm should have a way to send messages to users.
Written by Asa.Ayers the 7 Apr 08 at 17:32. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I have another idea on brainstorm where someone responded and I would like to ask that person for additional feedback. I think brainstorm should have somewhere on a user's profile where I could send a message to them. When someone is critical of an idea they aren't likely to ever return to see how the idea has progressed.

Please leave a comment if you vote this down. I would like to know what people this is wrong with this idea.

Promote Shuttleworth OSS pulse, on project at a time
Written by mangar the 24 Jun 08 at 06:34. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Mark Shuttlework (http://www.markshuttleworth.com/), offered that all of the OSS projects will have a pulse:

Libraries, foundations (gtk+, qt, x.org, kernel): A stable release every 6 month to a year.

Applications: A stable release X months after the libraries released.

Distros: A stable release X time after Applications are released.

This way, creating a distribution, and developing for Linux and the OSS software stack will have a predictable "pulse", where everyone can collaborate, share patches, and use the same base libraries, instead of the current situation, where each piece of software uses it's own version of the base stack, and the maintainers and packagers runs around like headless chickens, trying to tie everything together, even the Kernel guys approved, since it allows them to know when to concentrate on bug-fixes releases, and relieve them of the need to support an unknown number of versions of the kernel.

There has been some controversy - Aaron Siego doesn't want to tie development to hard time-lines, the Redhat people see it as a way to leech QA resources from them, etc.

Since I believe it is a great idea, that will bring some order and predictability to the OSS stack (that's a good think - it allows developers to have stable building blocks, and users to have the latest versions of software in each release), I suggest that the Ubuntu project will contact each project, one at a time, and bring them into the Pulse, until the majority of project will be synchronized.

Ubuntu Bob should replace the Gnome Desktop in Ibex
Written by Diggs808 the 24 Jun 08 at 20:23. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think that Ubuntu replace the Gnome Desktop in Ibex with a version of Microsoft Bob...it could be called Ubuntu Bob and feature all the award winning functionality and help that is provided by the completely awesome Microsoft Bob.

JUST KIDDING! Okay, seriously...I think that there needs to be a category here on Brainstorm for Humor. Like someone suggesting Microsoft Bob replace the Gnome Desktop in Ibex. Or someone suggesting that Ubuntu should really get into the hardware/software/mobile phone business. Just a place for those of us who want to make a suggestion that we know has no chance of ever being implemented without it negatively affecting our count. The category could be humor and maybe the best at the end of each development cycle receives a free t-shirt or something. I just think that it would be a very fun way to get a good laugh while thinking about serious ways to improve our favorite OS.

Include 32 bit depth for video   forum
Written by adityakavoor the 13 Mar 08 at 18:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu has a 24bit color depth by default.

It would be great if it gets a 32 bit color video display which would render better graphics, better video playback and might also help game lovers to run games better on linux.

I always feel video playback is where window$ takes a upper hand over ubuntu... Please fix this.

make Ubuntu easier, without copying OS X or Windows
Written by Tuxoid the 23 Jun 08 at 22:49. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Mark Shuttleworth once said that he wishes for Linux to become popular on it's own merits. To me, this is incredibly noble, and is truly respectful to great development in the world of Linux.

Unfortunately, many developers on Linux are now focusing on copying Windows and MacOS (windows especially), to attract new users. There are Distributions like Linux XP, Linspire, PCLinuxOS, focusing on mimicking Windows to attract users. Through these, and other projects, Linux is missing an opportunity for excelling beyond the attractiveness of Windows and MacOS, in the eyes of the average user.

Some may say, "It can't be done!", for whatever reason; Some may say, "It shouldn't be done!", for whatever reason. My question to those who would say we cannot do it is, why?

Yes, Microsoft and Apple can pay for Usability experts, but they can also pay for so-called "Programming-experts" that do necessarily match-up to the programmers of the free software world. To test usability, we need test it on people; that's it. There are usability issues in Windows and MacOS X that we tackle much faster with the bulk of our community.

I believe in the Linux community and I wish the best of innovation. I would love to see something very different from other OS's.

A Program that is similar to google earth.
Written by poflaco the 22 Jun 08 at 18:58. Category: Education. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Their is a program that shows the earth and you add different layers over it but it seems to be too inadequate. A new one should be made. Although we may not be able to get satellite images we can create a program that shows a digital earth and we can change that map settings from topographical or political. Since we have Linux in many languages we can get lots of help in creating a digital earth.

Make new category for addtional software
Written by namitkewat the 22 Jun 08 at 06:40. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
as it is nessesary that ubuntu must come in size of CD. but it has not all good software contain.

my suggestion is that make two different CD.

in first cd
one in which only OS is allowed ,
more thing is that ubuntu must change is grafical interface..i don't know how but..make it cute, attractive(change fonts, folder, explorer design everthing)(see Windows Vista , and apple) (make it attractive)(right now ubuntu 8.04 is like i am working in Windows 95 or not more than windows 98, but i love buntu more than any other OS, i am telling this that my love must have an beautiful face) and all this in one CD. nothing extra in that.

in second cd
and in another CD do something that all the nessecasry sotwares must be included (means office, editiors, all players, means make an ultimate collection) and this 700mb has all round collection of must have software. and make this in such a way that when one can run this CD in PC, it can be detected by "Synaptic Manager" so that on one mark one can install all armers of ubuntu os...

now this is great.

And Publish this as "Ubuntu 9.04"(Ubuntu Ultimate)

Replace Firefox with Epiphany as the default webbrowser
Ubuntu

Written by F for Fragging the 28 Feb 08 at 22:14. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Unlike Epiphnay, Firefox is not a real GNOME application, even with the enhanced native look which has been introduced by Firefox 3.0.

Epiphany is a very simple browser, more conforming to the spirit of GNOME, which lacks a lot of the features of Firefox. However, I think most people will probably not need Firefox' extra features and plugins. Those who do need Firefox could easily download it when Epiphany becomes the default webbrowser included out-of-the-box in Ubuntu. Ubuntu should aim for consistency, and Epiphany certainly is a better candidate than Firefox if consistency is the goal.

Epiphany currently uses the Gecko-engine for rendering, but will probably feature WebKit - http://live.gnome.org/Epiphany/WebKit - soon. WebKit would probably do a better job than Gecko.

Because somehow Ubuntu brainstorm says the Blueprint URL I gave isn't valid, I give it here in the text: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/epiphany-default-browser

Motion Background, Wine for Mac, Wine for Amiga OS 4
Written by HardyGrande the 14 Mar 08 at 11:42. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi I think Ubuntu need a "thing" for a motion background, like the ps3 or other stuff.

Another Idea is an MAC Emulator like wine, by a standart installation.

An an Amiga OS 4 Emulator like wine, too

Then we need a software that can start any second OS from a partiton on the pc hd. But not in a virtual mode, we must start it real, to work.
