Recycle Bin : empty by default
Written by FiP the 4 Oct 08 at 16:31. Category: Usability. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to be able to empty the recycle bin when I (left) click on the icon, not open it.

I want to empty it more often than I want to check what's in it, so I'd like a way to do that faster, especially since the icon is so small, in it's corner of the screen.

This should be optional; I'm just looking for a way to rapidly empty the recycle bin.

Do not allow the new wallpaper and login sounds in Intrepid to be used!
Written by brettalton the 5 Oct 08 at 05:55. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am shocked at the Intrepid beta as I saw - what I thought to be - a blatant digression with the wallpaper and the login/logout sounds from Hardy to Intrepid.

I see for the sounds they made the packaging more freedesktop-friendly, but it still doesn't mean I like it.

Hardy

login: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/hardy-login.wav
logout: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/hardy-logout.wav

Intrepid
wall: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid.png
login: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid-login.ogg
logout: http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid-logout.ogg

(Feel free to use the links (temporarily) for your blogs. For the wallpapers, see ubuntu-wallpapers or /usr/share/wallapapers. For the sounds, see ubuntu-sounds /usr/share/sounds)

I personally - as a computer nerd - don't care much about the default wallpaper in an operating system as I know it can be changed, but first impressions mean a lot to others. It does mean a lot to me, however, as someone who is in marketing and who has been trained in design for a number of years.

I think everyone agrees, except for those few people that we never see - the people whose decisions matter.

I am going to use one of the pics on the wiki, either one from rico or thorsten

Add an option to enable Apt-P2P in Ubuntu
Written by smartboyathome the 4 Oct 08 at 00:13. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
First off: This is NOT a duplicate of idea 7792. Apt-P2P uses similar meathods to bittorrent in the downloading from peers, but is not based on it in any way.

Anyway, I suggest that there be an option in Software Sources to be able to use apt-p2p instead of the normal apt protocol to download packages. Apt-P2P basically adds localhost:9977/ in front of the repo, so that it would look like "deb http://localhost:9977/path.to/repo" in your sources.list instead of "deb http://path.to/repo". This allows you to download from peers when available, but if no peers are available for a specific package, it downloads from the repository as normal. Once you have downloaded a package and it is in your cache, though, then apt-p2p would share it with others.

The uses for this would be that it would take a load off of the servers. Every year around the time a new version of Ubuntu is released, Ubuntu's servers are pushed to the breaking point when everyone is trying to upgrade. With this, that can be cut to a minimum for those who choose to use it. Since some ISPs set limits on your internet usage and this can raise it up, enabling it by default would be a mistake (just like having new ISO downloads be bittorrent by default would be a mistake).

How about a panel app to keep track of election stats?
Written by plantboy1 the 27 Sep 08 at 01:36. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
With elections coming up, it might be fun in 8.10 to include a panel app that would show the currents stats of the election and polls and maybe let users vote on the candidate they like.

Possibly in the future this could be expanded to allow users to make their own polls for it and such for other users to vote on.

Kubuntu should use KDE 1.0 instead of 4.1
Written by nitrofurano the 23 Sep 08 at 16:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Kubuntu. New
In my oppinion, Kubuntu should use the last good version of KDE always existed, 1.0 - it were clean, fast, stable, without fancynesses, etc.

Valve needs linux programers.
Written by Noxn the 23 Sep 08 at 08:37. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It looks like Valve needs linux programmers, I got this as a response from Gabe Newell:

"Do you know any good Linux developers?"

Duh, maybe someone wants the job?

Push for Yahoo to update their linux client
Written by Kreuger the 1 Mar 08 at 15:20. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
For years now, I've been trying to find the best client for using yahoo messenger on linux and none of them really cut it. Most of them are lacking features, others are specific to a certain desktop. I use Fluxbox and dont want to run Kopete or anything under it. We need to push Yahoo to update their client much like Mac users have to push Microsoft to update their msn. The client as it sits right now looks like it was made in the 1950s or something.

let Kubuntu/KDE to be the default more advertised distro. And Ubuntu/GNOME an extra.

If you prefer Kubuntu KDE vote +1
If you prefer Ubuntu GNOME vote -1

I wonder what will be the result....

EDIT: ok, the idea is stupid. Please stop voting :)

better wireless connection on signal strenght as weak as 5%
Written by nitrofurano the 17 Sep 08 at 23:17. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Gnome. New
Maybe most of people realized how hard is having a wireless connection when the strength is smaller than 15%.

I don't know much about wireless (and i don't know how possible it is), but it seems in theory we can have slow connections when the strengt is too low.

The wireless management could be the best as possible, and maybe allow us to tweak it by hand as far as possible, even if we use native drivers or ndiswrapper ones.

Files copied from a CDROM should not be read-only
Written by young the 11 Sep 08 at 09:21. Category: Usability. Related to: Nautilus. New
You can get read-only files in several ways, but the most common way is to copy files to your computer from a CDROM. Is there any reason to keep read-only permissions when copying files from cdrom to hard disk?

Add installation configuration option for SSD (solid state drive) installs.
Written by Krupski the 15 Sep 08 at 14:07. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Solid State Drives (SSD) are becoming more popular and less expensive all the time. Many people are using SSD drives either exclusively or in conjunction with hard drives.

Solid State Drives, unlike RAM or hard drives, do not have unlimited write cycles. That is, with repeated "disk" writes to the SSD (on the order of 100,000), the memory bits can wear out and fail to store data properly.

Therefore, it would be very useful if Ubuntu had an INSTALLATION OPTION that could setup a "Boot to ram" configuration (where the SSD is copied to system ram, then run from ram)

-OR-

The installation option could place heavily written but expendable directories into TMPFS or RAMDISK.

Also, internal system parameters such as the elevator, sync and cache flushing back to the SSD would need to be configured for optimal SSD use.

The goal, of course, being to minimize or eliminate write cycles to the Solid State Drive and maximize it's working life.

=== end ===

Finish to port the Linux kernel to the iPhone/iPod Touch
Written by pierre.slamich@gmail.com the 15 Sep 08 at 19:33. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Ubuntu mobile edition. New
An effort to break the iphone/ipodtouch DRM protections and to port the linux kernel to it has been started at iphonelinux.org. It's nearly finished for the kernel part, but needs additionnal work to boot the kernel.

Having those devices as developpement devices would enable progress on mobile linux, and would create interest in open soulutions like openmoko: to show there's another more reliable way to free those devices than "pawning/jailbreaking" them

version numbers in add/remove programs
Written by tstclair the 10 Sep 08 at 20:50. Category: Installation. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
I was trying to find the version numbers of some new programs I wanted to install, but I couldn't find them anywhere in the add/remove programs manager. They are, of course, listed in synaptic and other places, but I think this is an important piece of information to include in the add/remove programs place also.

Ubuntu optimized for laptops
Written by thuban the 12 Sep 08 at 13:04. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The idea is to create an Ubuntu version for laptops only.(after xubuntu, a laptubuntu version?). That means there will be light soft on it, and the distrop would be optimized in power safe.

I beg your pardon for my poor english.

Page for brainstorming next Ubuntu names
Written by CydeSwype the 11 Sep 08 at 16:26. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Would love to have a wiki page or other system for brainstorming (and possibly voting, maybe a separate topic here on brainstorm) on upcoming Ubuntu release names. Jaunty Jackelope is a pretty decent name, but perhaps the community can come up with a better options.

There's lots of good animals in "K" (Koala, Kiwi, Kangaroo...lots of Aussie representatives) but adjectives are a bit sparse, so this is a great time to start such a space.
