Offer 2 Desktops Layouts on first boot.
Written by retj the 24 Jul 08 at 15:48. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This is a subject well discussed on forums if ubuntu should use 1 or 2 panels as a default desktop layout.

So, what happens if on first boot the user is given an option to select which one is about to use.

1.- Standard Top-Bottom panel with Applications/Places/System menu.

2.- Single-Bottom Panel with gnome main menu and gnome control center.

This is a concept that would help user to learn Ubuntu easily, using what user is familiar with.

Novel Writing Software   forum
Written by Susanna777 the 24 Jul 08 at 19:15. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think there should be a native app on Ubuntu for a novel writing software.

Some examples are:

Windows: WriteWayPro, yWriter, PowerWriter
Mac: Scrivener, Jer's Novel Writing Software (I have not used either one, but I've heard they are good.)

Writer's Cafe is more for planning a novel; it does not include a built in word processor.

Also, I have tried organizers like Basket Note Pads and KnowIt but they do not have nearly as many features as the programs listed above though.

Most of the organizers did not have a print feature, a ruler at the top for tabbing, word count, find & replace, spell check etc. all the things normal word processors would have.

However, normal word processors do not have the ability to store novels in a chapter and scene format as a organizer could.

The programs I listed above would be great examples as to what I'm looking for. I have searched for this type of app, but have not found a satisfactory alternative. This is the only thing that makes Windows appealing, and I think more novelists would switch to Ubuntu if this was available.

Sincerely,
Susanna777

Install most popular and used software by default
Written by Breakable the 14 Apr 08 at 16:06. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu should track which software is installed on the computers by users and this popular software should be part of the default system.

Popularity should not be measured by which items are left unchanged and unused in the repository how it is currently done, but what users choose to install and use.

I would expect that users are installing:
Browser plugins,
Video codecs,
Games,
Emulators and Productivity suite's.
If these are popular, they should be part of the Ubuntu system, so that after installation for most users a fully working system is available. This information should also be provided to the developers of derived systems, so that they can benefit from this information.

There might be problems with software repositories, accepting license agreements and putting GPL software as well as proprietary on the same CD. Those issues should be resolved as much as possible by trying to provide convenience to the user.

For example if proprietary flash plugin cannot be distributed in the cd and requires accepting a license, so the Ubuntu installer should propose to accept this license and download/install the plugin from a disk.

Of course trialware should not be part of the default installation.

Hide the borders / frames of windows. Only if mouse moves over a certain area, the frame appears. Make it a compiz option.

Splash Screens
Written by nami the 11 Apr 08 at 10:53. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Integrated gnome applications like OOo should have splash screens which change with the gnome theme. For example, the default theme for ubuntu is brown, and so is the splash screen for OOo.

However, if I change the default ubuntu theme to a blue one, the OOo splash screen remains brown but the OOo applications change to blue.

The splash screens should also get affected be more integrated so they are influenced by the chosen theme so ubuntu looks and feels better.

This should happen with all integrated gnome applications.

The /media and /mnt directories should be linked
Written by feakk the 8 Apr 08 at 17:27. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

The /media directory has largely replaced the use of /mnt in auto mounting, It appears that this situation is a result of the FHS-2.3
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard):

/media/ Mount points for removable media such as CD-ROMs (appeared in FHS-2.3).
/mnt/ Temporarily mounted filesystems.

While I think the proposal still makes sense because the difference between the two directories is minor, on second though I would err on the side of caution and leave the situation as it is to preserve FHS compliance.

KOffice instead of OpenOffice in Kubuntu

I think KOffice is ready to replace OO, it should be the default Office Suite, at least in Kubuntu .

Eliminate double-click; replace with something better
Written by bryhoyt the 7 Apr 08 at 23:12. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've found this to be an accessibility problem for older people, children, and first-time computer owners. There are better ways to open files, folders, and activate items. Even though double-click has been the way to do this for many years, it's so fraught with problems that I suggest we completely eliminate it, and replace it with better, more efficient, alternatives.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-click_(computing)

(Apologies in advance for the length of the following paragraphs:)

I realize you can turn on single-click activation in Nautilus, but that only solves one or two of the many problems (and comes with its own problems), and you still need double-click for some things, so you can't turn it off completely -- which means it still disrupts you when trying to single-click multiple times.

Problems with double-click:
1) It can disrupt the functionality of single-click, if you need to single-click two times, separately. There are a number of UI controls that require you to click, and then click again to edit. Because these 2 actions need to be distinguished from a single double-click, you need to click...wait...click. Some examples of this are text-entry boxes that you can select, then edit (eg editing transform matrices in Inkscape).
2) Efficiency: because it's hard to guess how long a double-click interval is, when you want to single-click twice separately, you tend to wait a bit longer between clicks, so that you don't accidentally double-click (and potentially do something irreversible). I find this slows me down. The flip-side of this coin is that you often still accidentally double-click, interrupting your work-flow.
3) It's only used for about 3 types of actions; opening files, folders, and activating items. This means it's much less important than single-click. So I think the ability to single-click twice in a row should be considered more important than double-click.
4) Discoverability & Learnability: maybe us hardened computer users have been double-clicking for years, but it's actually a really hard-to-discover function for people new to computers. If you didn't know about it, how would you know to try double-clicking? What does it map to in the real world? Nothing -- you don't double-pick apples, or double-close the fridge door, or double-pull a trigger, or double-press a piano key to play it.

Can't we just have the best of both worlds
Written by vexorian the 8 Apr 08 at 04:14. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
So, this is gonna have terrible reactions, but here's the deal:

Konqueror is a fine browser, but firefox is better, at least the version 3 is much better. Dunno why Kubuntu doesn't include it yet it includes OOo instead of Koffice?

Brasero is perhaps the best GTK cd burning app out there, yet it blows in comparison to K3B, in the sense that at least K3b works...

Amarok...

What I think is that ubuntu is locked into GTK apps, while Kubuntu is locked into QT apps, couldn't we just let distros pick the best, friendlier program? I actually think konqueror should be included in ubuntu if only for being the most decent way to have a graphical interface for (s)ftp, ssh , etc. There are a lot of examples in which apps from one distro top another and viceversa... adept sort of works, but I really think synaptic is better at that stuff, etc...

I am not saying "replace brasero with k3b", I am saying that the team that decides what default apps to include should not get limited by GTK or QT, but by which one is better, their choices are perhaps going to vary with mine.

Give Ubuntu a Personality (Make popups have a life)
Written by Truefire the 6 Apr 08 at 00:47. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be sweet if Ubuntu talked. E.g.: Instead of,"Your computer needs to restart, etc" we would have,"I need to restart because I just got updates! For those updates to work properly, click Restart below." This will not add to the frequency of popups, just give a more personal feel.
.
It will make many people more comfortable with their computers. It feels less 'geeky'. Maybe put a face in the Ubuntu Logo, like Finder in a Mac for these popups.
Overall, this will be a revolutionary yet simple step in the direction of the truly 'user-friendly' computer.

Keep up the good work guys and gals, we appreciate it around the globe.

Brainstorm: New category for 8.10 release

Make a new category for the 8.10 release since our beloved 8.04 releases in just three (3) short weeks and it isn't feasible to implement all these good ideas by the release deadline.

can`t install Ubuntu inside VirtualBox - fix it!
Written by Theodore the 3 Apr 08 at 19:54. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu can not be installed inside VirtualBox. Other linux distros can. When testing new distros or when you are a windows user and looking for a good linux distro then it`s quite bad that Ubuntu isn`t running inside VirtualNox.

I think it`s important that Ubuntu works inside all important virtualizers.

Hardy Heron must me released in June 2008 because of Firefox 3.0
Written by JoeLeKiffeur the 3 Apr 08 at 20:35. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
(Sorry for my bad English)

I know, it's a very important decision, but if Ubuntu will support Firefox 3.0, the Mozilla's browser must be STABLE.
Firefox 3.0 is planned to be released in June, that's why I ask to report the version of the new LTS release.

Please consider this idea seriously.

Thank you.

I think it could be usefull to add by default the "Add tab" icon on the Firefox "Navigation toolbar", just on the left of the "Go back" icon.

Beter webdesign for MythBuntu homepage
Written by loki the 4 Apr 08 at 08:43. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The MythBuntu distribution is important because this distro can get at places where not other distro has come before. It's an great Media Center solution to replace harddiskrecorders, MS Media Center and much more.

Looking at the current site, i'm afraid does nog represent mythBuntu very good.

Following some suggestions:
- There are nicer screenshot possible (configuration screens just don't look so cool)
- Combine feutures section with screenshots (e.g. http://www.team-mediaportal.com/features.html)
- Support section is not so clear for new users, this can be more organised, like other Ubuntu distro's.
- Try to keep functional and technical stuff mostly separately. There both equally imported, but most people just need one of them.
- I think most of the site is a little out-of-date. It was great, but it's nog enough anymore when comparing it to the one of www.team-mediaportal.com or M$.
- Layout and structure is half the fight for getting new users and keeping them.

Add your suggestions to improve the MythBuntu homepage below (this is a brainstorm session).
