[-39] Keep Firefox betas out of OS releases

I know this is probably going to be unpopular as hell, but what business does Ubuntu devs have putting betas of Firefox in Ubutu ISOs like Firefox 3 is the default in Hardy? I know Firefox 3 is faster and probably better than Firefox 2, but there are two huge reasons for keeping it out of Hardy until it's released. First Firefox 3 is still in beta phase, and no matter how well things are looking for the Linux versions things are not finished yet. Some things could and probably will change before it's release (now looking at late May/early June, past the Hardy ship date). Should we be giving users software that so clearly isn't finished yet as the default browser? Especially when so much of the addons are not updated to work with Firefox 3 yet?

Second is the fact that people should always have to opt into using beta software as an intentional act on their part. I realize Hardy is still in alpha phase so people using it are opting in, but they're opting into the OS, not the web browser.

These are just two big reasons why Firefox 2 should stay the default browser for Hardy and why no beta software should ever be the default for Ubuntu. Make betas available in Synaptic, but let the users make the choice to use it or not use it. And yes, I'm typing this is Firefox 3.0b5pre, but I made the decision to use it, just like everyone else should have that choice when they install/upgrade Ubuntu.

We have dual-core, and quad-core processors now, how much are we taking advantage of this additional power. Also we could provide better development tools to take advantage of multi-core processors.

OSS should lead the way in parallel processing, not just playing catch-up. We still don't even take advantage of the fact that most modern processors are now 32/64 hybrid. OS X can run 32/64/PPC(Rosetta) architecture all on the same box. Yes it is difficult, but a discussion should be started on what kind of work could be done in this area.

http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20080318corp.htm?iid=pr1_releas epri_20080318r (Cred: jespdj)

[371] Kernel 2.6.25 for Hardy

1. There are deeply invasive performance/scalability/latency fixes for CFS regressions (vs. 2.6.24) in the 2.6.25 tree. These fixes are too invasive to be ported to the 2.6.24 kernel without significant risk.

2. Many of the driver updates/new drivers in the kernel-ubuntu package are merged into upstream as of 2.6.25. (This is always true, but the smaller the delta against upstream the better on release day).

3. Fedora 9 is based on 2.6.25 which means that key RH kernel developers are aggressively working to get the feature and performance/scalability regressions vs. 2.6.18 & 22 fixed.

4. The kgdb patch will probably be merged at the start of the 2.6.26 cycle which means the delta vs. 2.6.25 kernel should be pretty manageable. This would be really valuable from an LTS ongoing perspective.

5. The RT patch will be better maintained (and smaller) against 2.6.25. (see #3)

6. Better virtualization and SELinux support (see #3).

Given the life-cycle of an LTS release (especially this one which will finally have a meaningful chance to enter the data center) these considerations are especially important.

Obviously 2.6.25 would have to be in addition to 2.6.24 for the Hardy 8.04 LTS release time-frame, but it does allow the aforementioned benefits to be propagated forward.

Since we love Ubuntu we also want to know how it fares in the world..

Hence we need some method to keep track of the number of computers that have Ubuntu installed on them, so that the number could be officially displayed at ubuntu.com or wherever.

Exactly how it should be done is up to the people that implements it. There are plenty of easy ways to do this that doesn't violate integrity, and even if this feature comes enabled as default in Ubuntu there should of course also be an option to turn it of if you somehow don't want to have your machine counted.

One of the first things new users comment on when trying linux is the lack of "smooth-scroll" in applications. Although it is a relatively minor point - smooth scrolling has come to be expected these days. Some of the advantages of it are,

* Looks more modern and professional,
* Allows the user to read while they scroll with the mouse wheel,
* In (for example) a Pidgin chat window the motion of a smooth scroll when you receive a message draws you eye: our brains are configured to respond to movement,
* Smooth movement is natural - jerky movement is not,
* Everyone else is doing it!

What would be required is for enough Ubuntu devs to discuss this on the Gtk mailing list, to show there is a demand for it. Once implemented this would include all Gtk applications, including Nautilus, Firefox and Pidgin.

Duplicates happen, and there are already quite a few examples of duplicates that have each accrued a fair number of votes (ie the original has 50 votes and the dupe 100).

This creates confusion for the user, should I vote for both ideas, the original, or the duplicate as it has more votes? This would obviously require some supervision, but a "propose merge" form for two very similar / identical ideas would help ensure that competition doesn't kill good ideas.

The merge process would also have to check to ensure that votes from the same person for each idea are not double counted, but I don't think this would be that hard to implement.

Example from idea 4292 :

One is suggesting to add MBR recovery option in Installation CD.http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1242/
One is suggesting that installer should never overwrite MBR.http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1957/
One is suggesting to have general application which can recover MBR.http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3985/

All these ideas should be merged and a single solution which seems to be good enough should be implemented.
