Kernel 2.6.25 for Hardy
Written by flounder the 24 Mar 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
1. There are deeply invasive performance/scalability/latency fixes for CFS regressions (vs. 2.6.24) in the 2.6.25 tree. These fixes are too invasive to be ported to the 2.6.24 kernel without significant risk.

2. Many of the driver updates/new drivers in the kernel-ubuntu package are merged into upstream as of 2.6.25. (This is always true, but the smaller the delta against upstream the better on release day).

3. Fedora 9 is based on 2.6.25 which means that key RH kernel developers are aggressively working to get the feature and performance/scalability regressions vs. 2.6.18 & 22 fixed.

4. The kgdb patch will probably be merged at the start of the 2.6.26 cycle which means the delta vs. 2.6.25 kernel should be pretty manageable. This would be really valuable from an LTS ongoing perspective.

5. The RT patch will be better maintained (and smaller) against 2.6.25. (see #3)

6. Better virtualization and SELinux support (see #3).

Given the life-cycle of an LTS release (especially this one which will finally have a meaningful chance to enter the data center) these considerations are especially important.

Obviously 2.6.25 would have to be in addition to 2.6.24 for the Hardy 8.04 LTS release time-frame, but it does allow the aforementioned benefits to be propagated forward.

New yearly versions instead of half-year
Written by ranser the 3 Mar 08 at 16:34. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
After and update broke my sound a developer on a forum said they are pressed with time (and testing) and that's why it happens to see bugs from 3 years ago come back and haunt. I propose to have maybe one version per year but with more extensive testing and with more new features, more revolutionary. As it is now I don't see much difference between Feisty and Gutsy.

Add 'Do not Update This' option to Update Manager
Written by mridkash the 29 Mar 08 at 16:58. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This issue is something I face regularly and thats why I'm posting it here.

I want a right click option on the updates in Update Manager which allows me to lock the version of a software and not update it. I know this functionality exists somewhere in Synaptic Package Manager, but still it would be convenient.

Example:
I have nvidia card on desktop and there was an intel video driver update recently, so it came up in Update Manager. I didn't want to install it obviously, so I unchecked it. But still every time I boot up, it shows new updates are available, and I see only that intel driver. If I get a 'do not update option' it would be handy.

Thanks

GUI for ALL .conf files
Written by spyyder the 5 Mar 08 at 00:20. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
No more editing .conf files! Lets bring a new level of usability to Ubuntu. All configuration files should have a GUI. I know the old school developers don't want to make things easier for newbies (preserving the l33t?), but this is the direction we need ot head in.

[firefox] Flashblock plugin by default
Written by Jarvis the 23 Mar 08 at 19:26. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The problem :
Flash plugin (or Gnash plugin) eats CPU when there are many Flash animations in a website.

My solution :
Install the Flashblock plugin by default in order to choose which Flash animation runs.

Flashblock plugin :

Provide text user interface for system config
Written by mok0 the 5 Mar 08 at 19:52. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Although Ubuntu is a very stable system, it can still happen that things break.

If that happens, and if X is not running, you are doomed, since most (all?) of the administration tools in Ubuntu are GUIs.

It would be good to have a full set of TUIs that can be run from a console or remote terminal.

Try to develop a distributon-independent packaging format
Written by _thomas_ the 5 Mar 08 at 19:50. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think it would be very good for Linux in general if there would exist a packaging format which nearly all distributions would support.
I do not mean every distribution should use deb or rpm, I mean a new packaging format which should be like a layer above rpm and deb and which should be able to integrate in many of the existing packaging systems. So for the user it should not be different to install like a deb file.
With this there would be an unified Linux package but the distributions can provide there own packages in their own packaging format too.
So then it would be much easier to develop programs for Linux.

I know Ubuntu cannot make this alone but Ubuntu can start and try to get all the distributions together for this.

I think the packaging problem is one of the greatest issues of Linux and should be fixed as soon as possible.

Stop developing Gobunt
Written by theodoor the 11 Mar 08 at 19:39. Category: Others. Related to: Gobuntu. New
Nobody use Gobuntu
It costs too much money, time and developers, who better can move to the other versions of Ubuntu.

Laptop volume change shouldn't go above fullscreen applications.
Written by poofyyoda the 13 Mar 08 at 09:31. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
At the moment, when a full screen application is running, and the laptop volume quick buttons are used, the volume change graphic is displayed on top of the program. This interferes and slows the program down and is annoying, especially with CPU hungry applications.

Make it so the visual cues only appear when programs are in windowed mode.

Handle windows files with similar windows install style
Written by ubee the 29 Feb 08 at 01:16. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't know Linux whatsoever. For users like me, it would be excellent if we could easily install programs built for windows - even if this means a baked in or optional emulator. I would like to install programs such as World Community Grid (www.worldcommunitygrid.org) or Zone Alarm etc... and I can't because they aren't in a .tar .gz format or whatever

(please forgive my simple windows-brain)

Main bar in the panel
Written by davidlo the 14 Mar 08 at 21:57. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When an application is maximized, the main bar (File, Edit, etc. ...) has the possibility that this is integrated into the top panel (as mac) and left more room to work.

Please add ext4fs and choose for installation...
Reasons:
1. Speedup file removing
2. Better and faster allocator
3. Bigger max file size
4. Precision timestamps
5. Bigger max number of folder inclusion
6. Faster indexation
7. Faster checking
8. Re-allocation for better video recording, torrent downloading etc.

Not Enough of Tux (Tuxedo T. Penguin): Give some props, include him in artwork   forum
Written by deadowl the 10 Mar 08 at 00:15. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu does not incorporate Tux into any artwork. He's not in the splash, he's not on the login screen, he's not even on the desktop.

In fact, he's not in any of the default set of artwork for any of these things.

I, for one, love Tux. I'd like to see more of him, and I'm sure others do as well. Frankly, I'm quite disappointed to see Ubuntu neglecting my favorite mascot.

Must Change the name
Written by kyubi the 29 Feb 08 at 15:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
They might add GNU/Linux to the name, example:

Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

Sometimes Cononical refers to Ubuntu as Ubuntu Linux, and other people more...

Linux is only the kernel of the OS, the complete OS is named GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu as son of Debian GNU/Linux, must use GNU/Linux in its name.

It's GNU/Linux, dammit....

Smooth scrolling in Gtk applications
Written by erlend the 16 Mar 08 at 18:31. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the first things new users comment on when trying linux is the lack of "smooth-scroll" in applications. Although it is a relatively minor point - smooth scrolling has come to be expected these days. Some of the advantages of it are,

* Looks more modern and professional,
* Allows the user to read while they scroll with the mouse wheel,
* In (for example) a Pidgin chat window the motion of a smooth scroll when you receive a message draws you eye: our brains are configured to respond to movement,
* Smooth movement is natural - jerky movement is not,
* Everyone else is doing it!

What would be required is for enough Ubuntu devs to discuss this on the Gtk mailing list, to show there is a demand for it. Once implemented this would include all Gtk applications, including Nautilus, Firefox and Pidgin.

Ubuntu Updates... Stop messing with my grubmenu.lst!
Written by tram the 29 Feb 08 at 21:44. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
I have a dual boot system with one Windows XP hard drive for gaming and another Ubuntu hard drive for everything else.

Upon downloading and installing kernel updates, it always seems to re-write my grubmenu.lst which removes Windows XP from the boot menu. I then have to manually tweak my grubmenu.lst file so it shows up in the list of boot options.

This is annoying and most n00bs wouldn't know how to fix this.

Remove windows softwares from Ubuntu cd
Written by vinutux the 7 Mar 08 at 19:58. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are a lot of windows apps like firefox, blender ,pidgin ...etc in ubuntu installer cd. Those apps are not needed most of the users coz they are not more interest on windows.
Removing those apps make more space on ubuntu installer cd and use those space for including more necessary applications.
