Make the super key bring down Applications menu
Written by ethana2 the 20 Mar 08 at 07:31. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This would reduce confusion. I didn't even think Ubuntu had a key combo for that menu for the longest time. Turns out it's alt+F1. Two keys? Having to span the keyboard with your hand? Fail.

This idea isn't 'windows-like' or 'mac-like'; it's behavior expected from every 'human being' that's used a computer via the keyboard before.

If you have a really good reason to be different, do so. As far as I'm aware, not using super for the Apps menu does not.

...and if you're using super as a modifier, you will have pressed another key before letting up on it. That would be the only potentially sensible opposition I can think of for this. All the people that use alt+F1 now will be grateful, once they figure it out.

While requesting features to the open source community which consist mainly of free workers, we may often forget to say how much we like Ubuntu and look like costumers requesting.

So you can say thank you to the thousands of developers and users who gave their time by voting for this article :)

Prevent applications from stealing focus   forum
Written by smenjas the 29 Feb 08 at 01:34. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm constantly frustrated by applications stealing my focus. There should be some way for me to ensure that when I begin typing somewhere, an overzealous application will never pop up in front of what I'm working on.

If an application needs my attention, it's task bar button should simply pulse so I can turn my attention to it when I'm ready. Pidgin does this; why not everything else?

On Mac OS X, Growl provides a system-wide way to notify the user that something has happened without getting in the way. I'd very much like to see Ubuntu adopt something like that.

I think more Windows users would try out Ubuntu if they could just double click an .exe file instead of going into a command prompt, browsing to the folder and then typing "wine *.exe" to install the program.

I like how Ubuntu adds shortcuts on the desktop and the "start menu" after you install the program making it easy to run but installing Windows software needs to be easier.

Show percents when Extract archive
Written by tomaszx the 4 Mar 08 at 09:38. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Now i don't see any informations when my archive has ben extracted.

From #5352 (merged):

When you are extracting an archive in File Roller you get a progress bar with a little box that moves to the left and to the write. The problem is that this gives no indication of how long the file will take to uncompress. I know that in Windows there is a progress bar the moves depending on how much of the file has been uncompressed. You can also check this manually by comparing the size of the uncompressing file to the total size that it should be once completed.

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

People around the globe that are using/concidering using Ubuntu are afraid that some of their hardware won't work for them. And some are frustrated to buy additional add-on cards to work around unsupportad onboard chips. All this could be avoided with a lookup in an ubuntu Hardware Database Website.

Some problematic hardware can be used with more or less work if helping information is available together with the hardware compatabillity data.

The hardware database can be found at http://hwdb.ubuntu.com/

From idea #47: The data should then be available in a format that is simple for users to browse on-line when considering new hardware.

Easy Hardware Detection (Out of Box)

It would be very beneficial for the newbie to install the Ubuntu from the Live CD, and have its new Hardware set up out of the box (Generic Is Ok,atleast it will work) instead of finding drivers or changing hardware.

Make it possible to mark applications "Disable Compiz when running"
Written by johan the 3 Mar 08 at 21:54. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. In development
This is what I want:

I want to be able to mark applications "Not Compiz compatible" so that Compiz shuts down when I launch a game or some other 3D-heavy application. This is something I want to improve stability and performance for such applications.

Developer comments
This will be automatically fixed with the arrival of DRI2 and updated drivers. There is no point in adding a plugin or workaround like suggested. The caveat here is that the initial support for DRI2 is only for intel's i915 at the moment... maybe with i965 following shortly thereafter.

When the OpenSource drivers for ATI (radeon, radeonHD) and nVIDIA (nouveau) will support DRI2 is still unknown. But the only way to fix the mentioned bugs is via DRI2. There is not much action that can come from our (Canonical) side as we don't have any experienced upstream Xorg developer in our team.

Introduce the Annual Ubuntu Design Awards
Written by Auzy the 4 Mar 08 at 01:50. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Microsoft has awards, Apple has design awards, now its our turn. We should hold a design Award night every year to motivate developers, encourage new linux start-ups, and promote innovation. It would also act to showcase some of the best we have to offer.

Suggested awards would be as follows:
- Best new Productivity Application (encourages business program development)
- Most innovative program (encourages the development of new types of programs)
- Best Social Application (encouraging social type applications)
- Most innovative free game (new types of games)
- Most promising new startup (encourages the formation of new companies).
- Most valuable developer (not sure about this one)
- Most improved program
- Best free program overall

The awards would certainly encourage development greatly (especially slightly before applications to join start). They must offer decent prizes, that are motivating (money would be best for the new startup, and get them going). Apple doesn't give away many prizes for theirs (mainly just computers and such), but it drives every programmer every year.

Our issue now is that OSX has companies like Freeverse, who are driving most of OSX's innovation, yet, we are having difficulty attracting similar companies. Awards such as these may encourage new linux startups that provide good linux programs, which possibly generate revenue for them without demanding it.

This would certainly help generate a river of new Applications, and boost innovation. It would also help bring the ubuntu community closer together.

And, it would encourage developers to sit down, and polish their interfaces for their applications a bit more. Seeing that Ubuntu happily gives away free CD's, and must have some full time staff, I think it should be affordable. And Dell would certainly donate some hardware I'm sure for the event (it acts as free advertising and would highlight their linux laptops). And it would cost nothing for companies like VMware to give away some software.

I find it hard to resize windows. The borders are not big enough to grab easily. I think it would be good if there was an extra invisible gap of a few pixels around the borders that you can grab on to so you don't have to visually make the borders thicker.

Better wi-fi support
Written by neilneil2000 the 29 Feb 08 at 00:20. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
More support for more wireless chipsets out of the box and "Windows style" ease of set up.

I have spent may a day trying to configure wireless cards on Ubuntu, often without much luck!

Please also deliver more support for what they are both wireless PCI cards and USB, as it is currently very low base of drivers for such devices

When someone wants to unmount a volume and the mount point is used, he gets a message telling him that the volume can't be unmounted because an application uses it. The user has no idea which application is actually using it and can't remove the device.

I propose that the popup tells him which application(s) is(are) using the device and propose to terminate them (that list should be kept up to date when the app. dies).

Start taking advantage of Upstart

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

Developer comments
The primary reason that we're not taking full advantage of Upstart yet is that it still requires some development to have sufficient features to actually be better than sysvinit. You can follow Upstart development at its homepage.
